Just got the movie on DVD - chilling, and Janssen is superb; his interplay with the always-underrated Clu Gulager is superb. Andrea Marcovicci as Jennifer English is uneven - at times Jenny was sweet but other times she came off as a bit spineless.
This is being released from the Warner Brothers Archive. It was the second pilot "Smile Jenny You're Dead". Hope it becomes available to buy in the UK and more DVDs are coming!
@Freddowasher Amazon now carry it too, it's on eBay as well. Here's hoping WAC are sorting out rights to get the whole show out, preferably on ordinary DVD rather than DVD-R, but of course after so much waiting for fans almost any format would do now.
@komodoman Still not available on the e-bay & Amazon UK sites only the .coms unfortunately so no shipping or taxes included. Also it's Region 0 so not sure it will play on my DVD. Will need to check this out as 0 isn't an official setting. Rhubarb! Rhubarb! Rhubarb!
@komodoman Thanks for the info. Looks a good site. However it says it's Region 1 there which is no use. It's about time Warner Bros got their act together and got a full international release of this series on DVD. I suspect they may be testing the water but a lot of people won't dip in unless they're sure of the version.
@Freddowasher Region 1 yes, but in all fairness so would a normal DVD release of the series be. But Warner in Europe could surprise us of course and bring it out. Don't know what the chances are of that though, if we want to benefit from all the stuff in general released in the US there's only one thing to do; a region-free player. Most stores can fix your old player's code quite cheaply, 20+ quid, no need to buy a new one.
@komodoman Thanks Will check this out, didn't know you can get it changed. It's actually a fairly new Blu - ray but think it's just for Region2. Will check the book!
I don't buy many DVDs I have to say, has to be really good stuff and there's not a lot of that around for me. This is though and I hope it's the start of more of Harry O.
Thanks again for your help, really appreciate it as I'm not a DVD buff.
The Fugitive alone was a grueling series for David Janssen. Insane shooting schedule and hours, location scenes across the country, Janssen having to be in virtually every scene of the series. It wore him down big time. That's why he left. He was exhausted.
Since episodes have been pulled off YT, I've noticed they're also not being offered for sale 'in those other places' like iOffer... So if it's just Warner showing muscles and claiming their right's issues broken - or - (as we all hope) they're gearing up for an official release we shall see... Fingers crossed anyway, that problems have been removed and we'll eventually see it out on DVD. For real.
Jodie Foster...one of the few successful child actors to become an even more successful adult actress. And such a cutie pie! I recall seeing a few episodes of "Harry O" as a teenager in the 70's. Lots of private eye programs then; but Harry O was different in having a shamus who was aging & who had all sorts of problems. I recall episodes where Harry took the bus around LA to do his sleuthing! The late Mr Janssen was such a good actor...sad that he left us too soon. THANKS for posting!
what a showcase of her acting abilities, it looks so easy, seems she´s just being herself. the dark timbre of her voice is terrific, saying the word ´Liberty´ it sounds that she not janssen had a look into the whisky bottle
You're right he was a wonderful actor who worked very long hours fro months at a time on TV series which took its toll.
If you research into his work and read reviews about him, you'll see that Howard Rodman who wrote Harry O, Anthony Zerbe and Henry Darrow had only good things to say about him. He was well liked by everyone on the sets he worked on and had time for them all. A consummate professional and a gentleman.
that is so cruel--he was not an old drunk, algavin47---he was a tremendously good, hard working actor who deserves to be remembered for all he gave us especially all the pain he payed in order to give his very finest work--the grueling work on The Fugitive--one example--these are human beings and David Janssen made it to the top and stayed there in a witheringly tough business--thank you UTube and everyone for keeping his supreme acting alive--he will be remembered long after idiots are dust
@cunhaizabel I don't think this was Guardian at the Gates, I think it was the pilot for the series Smile Jenny You're Dead. The IMDb database for Harry O shows Jodie Foster in the cast credits for this programme. Maybe someone can confirm this is correct.

This "Harry O" episode is not "Guardian at the Gates".
This episode with Jodie Foster is called "Smile, Jenny, you´re dead". It was a 90 minute episode!

I love David Jannsen. His best TV show was The Fugitive, Although Harry-o, and O'hara U.S. Treasury were fine shows too.
How long will it be before Harry-o and O'hara get released on DVD.?? if ever.

there was also a first pilot that aired during the 1972-1973 season. Martin Sheen and Margot(Lois Lane)Kidder starred in that movie.
