Shotgun mic? Aim it backwards not facing traffic, even if there's something in front of it it's always better to aim away from your background noise.

@pinkfloydeffect - I know - :) Usually I would do that, but when you're doing nature videos you need to put the mic in a place that doesn't freak the animals out. If I put the mic in front, it would always be in the shot, and I wanted that specific angle for a reason (although I don't remember why now :)) Even if it is pointing out of traffic, the traffic noise is so loud here, it wouldn't even matter... Usually what I do is put it in front of the tree, pointing away from traffic.

@taburineagle Try a homemade shotgun mic, or if you have a mic jack a cheap external spy mic dish thing (they direct the sound into a beam) so all you will hear is footsteps and munching :)

@pinkfloydeffect - That would be awesome if that kind of a setup worked! Wouldn't that give the sound a lot of high-end though? Kind of similar to the sound you get holding a glass up to your ear? What I've been doing (this video is a few years old) lately is using a AT shotgun mic (in a much better place) and pointing it away from traffic, but the sound is still there -- better, but still there...

EQing it and I've tried some Soundtrack tips to get rid of some of the noise, but after a while (I've been doing this particular project for 12 years now :)), I just gave up and accepted the noise... It's a *ton* better now with the shotgun mic, but the sound is still there... friggin' TRAFFIC... need to move to a better shooting location - :)

@taburineagle Try using a noise canceling shotgun mic(has a mini external noise mic), paired with an external mic pointed at the traffic, that would work quite efficiently but could get costly. You must have a nice camera because for a 2007 upload the quality is still completely there.

Yes it is - thanks Kym! I'm guessing it's most likely traffic noise that you're hearing in the background. We have quite a bit of traffic that comes by this area, but squirrels and chipmunks still do quite well here - they seem desensitized to the noise (and they definitely know not to go out in the street here!)

I've got a distinct feeling that the chipmunk saw some movement and likely noticed the camera. Perhaps it thought that the camera lense was the eye of some big, dangerous animal that it tried to figure out how to run away from in time... ;-) ...or it just found out that it was his time to start posing for "the silver screen" xD

Instinctively, I fell silent as the chipmunk stared at the camera. It's so funny how long it just sat there and STARED at us! Also, that eating motion is very entertaining, especially when it gets a curved lip and looks like Elvis, or making some kind of silly face due to the nut.

You should see them when they try shoving multiple peanuts in their mouth! They puff up like they've got billiard balls in their cheeks! :) I couldn't believe how long it just sat there either! I moved the camera just slightly and it froze - I'm pretty sure that's the reason he stared, but I couldn't believe for how *long* he just sat there! "Sure, he's spooked because the camera moved - buuut..." :)
