Just to clear some things up: this is a viola that happens to have 5 strings on it (yes, they do exist); some violas have a strange upper bout to make it more resonant. As for the tone, it's odd only because it's muted with a rather heavy mute. There is nothing at all strange about this man's viola or how it sounds.
MANDORLA after Paul Celan In mandorla , where Nothing reigns, What stands in mandorla? Two almond-shaped eyes, Royal blue. And in eyes, what stands in these eyes? A tear, a tear with dead shine inside. And this shine, what reflects this shine? The sky, the sky full of ashes and soot. Black, charred almonds, Empty, almond-shaped eyes What stands in mandorla? A royal tear, which it isn` t there
I don't think that's a viola at all... from the description box, it appears to be an "arpegina" -- not something I've ever heard of before. Notice that this instrument has 5 strings and a distinctly different tone from a normal viola.
how come he misses out some variations?
