It's so odd that Lillian and Dorothy Gish don't resemble each other in the slightest. Dorothy looked good enough to carry her own pictures but Lillian was the real beauty with those huge expressive eyes. The problem for modern viewers is not unconsciously juxtaposing the way Lillian Gish looked later while watching her early work. The problem was that she still looked like herself only much older later on. This is the first movie with either Gish and it's very effective on a big screen.
@Onlymusical Really? I read D.W. Griffith thought they were twins and so tied a red ribbon on one and a blue ribbon on the other and would direct them according to color, like 'Red, you here, Blue you respond to that', go figure.
@TheBookWorm1718 I saw this on a big screen at MoMA in New York and they look starkly different onscreen. They may well have looked more alike in life since, as everyone knows, the camera produces a different image from what we actually see and one never knows how it will pan out. Aaron Eckhart, for example, looks huge onscreen but I bumped into him on a subway a few years ago and he doesn't look like that at all in person, while with John Turturro it's precisely the other way around.
I loved this movie I had been looking for it and couldn't find it!Lillian Gish is my newfound favorite actress,I love her films and her book, she was quite an amazing lady.I love Dorothy too,she done an outstanding job in this film.Thank you for posting this!
@mandydancerful The Museum of Modern Art just started a huge Lillian Gish retrospective on their huge screen this past Friday. Every film is so magnificently restored it almost shimmers. Check it out online at moma.org and come to Manhattan.
Dear Lillian Gish passed away in 1993 100 years of age, she lived well as an example of fine White women of principles & there are few if any of her caliber today.
She was a brave patriot & used her fame to stand 4 what was not only right, & important to US as Nation
Lillian as a member of America First, and supported Charles A. Lindbergh's stance of no war for F.D.R. and his banking cabal.
She was offered paying rolls in 1939, & 1940 to resign from America First, she did not. R.I.P. Dear
I know what you mean. I think you have to look at it from the perspective of someone like her at the time. DW was her idol, and they had just made one of the first great movies despite its derogatory racial aspects. Things were different; people thought differently.

Lillian Gish was brilliant. I especially loved her in The Whales of August, which she starred in 75 years after this movie!

Did you see her on the Alfred Hitchcock hour?
She had to be in her 60's, but she was still very pretty.
If you can, check it out. It is one of my favorites.

You are correct UofLCardFan08. She was born Oct. 14, 1893 and died Feb. 27th, 1993. Not sure why there are so many thumbs down...

Yeah, it was a simple correction.
