  • Thank you for your kind comment - diolch am eich sylw caredig.

  • A lovely song and a fine effort! Do I sense some tinges of the early Vickers? Thank you for posting.

  • A huge open sound, and such commitment. Bravo John!

  • Wow great performance, even if I don't understand it. LOL. You sure have a nice operatic voice.

  • Lovely performance, lovely song!

  • Very impressive... liked your voice and the song too. You sing very easy through the bottom to top. Thanks for posting!

  • This rendition just gets better and better every time. Diolch John

  • Throughly ejoyed the song and voice. wish I knew Welsh. --song sort of reminded me of some of Grieg. I like the voice, it's free and very open. That though, lets the vibrato be a bit wide for me (what would a trill sound like with a vibrato as wide as we have here?). But then since I am a countertenor, I'm used to singing very pure, unless I switch to songs that require the vibrato for color.

All in all I appreciate learning of this & hope to find more. Thanks

  • thank you very much for the message!!! thats really great!!!

  • R S Hughes the composer of this wonderfully sung piece was organist at Glan Ogwen church Bethesda Gwynedd, North Wales and lies in its cemetery in an unkemt grave. However this song ensures that he lives on in eternity. It has been a very popular solo in Wales having been sung by all of our great tenors. Oh that he would be alive today to listen to John Puw giving a belting performance of the piece -and people from all over the world so appreciative in their comments.

  • Wow wow wow...!!! awesom! Wonderfull voice and what a an amazing song!!!

  • Beautiful!

  • BRAVO!!!!!!! I Loved this!! Great job and wonderful tone. Your range is impressive and the clarity at the lower and upper registers was beautiful! I would LOVE to hear more recordings of you. from one tenor to another..Thanks For Posting!!!!

  • Excellent and my first exposure to anything Welsh, great song and I really like the top of your voice, the language flows beautifully. Hope you do more, Bravo from Chicago!

  • Thank you very much for sharing this with me, you have a VERY beautiful sound, and this song is really moving, and I really didn't have to read the lyrics to get the meaning.....although I did :)

This is what I love about Youtube, we can all share things and enjoy things we might not othterwise be able to enjoy.

My very best to everyone here!

    Regards,

    Egill

  • Thanks for your comment.

Arafa Don was written by R S (Richard Samuel)Hughes 1855 - 1893 to the words of Tudno Jones (who lost a brother to the sea, hence this poem). The song apparently won the song composition competition at the Swansea National Eisteddfod of 1880.

  • Great song, great voice. Thanks for the translation. Who is the composer?

  • Тhanks for your message and for sharing with me this video. What a lovely song and great voice!

  • Hi, thanks for your message and for show me this video, actually i find your voice really good and the song is gorgeous...the song have an italian influence or is your technique?

  • Lovely! Thank you!

And thank you for introducing me to a song I didn't know.;)

  • Bravo! Amazing song, a rare rendition of such beautiful piece. Thanks for posting it.

  • Very nice, I am always so pleased to hear good music, meaningful ty

  • it is a old German mode of expression:

thus cry My name is tears high to the sky. A voice chanted this song seized me deeply inside. Even if the wind to the haste floats it is the proud recollection which remains up to my end. Lay I the last kiss, on your cold lips. A poem specially for you spontaneously written down.

    Respect!

I love and respect a such miraculous achievement, unfortunately there is too little of it.

All love for you, yours amanavoic

  • quite powerful,melodic, and moving,bravo!

  • Bella voz. Le vendría muy bien a ciertos roles heroicos de la ópera wagneriana.

  • What a lovely, sad song! Long, too, and you maintain control so beautifully.

  • Beutiful. Sounds similar to Italian opera. I'm actually Scottish but I find Welsh incredibly beutiful. Happy Hogmanay!

  • How wonderful this is!

I think of one and contact like you and I think popular to be a very glad.

  • My sicere compliments, thank you.

  • Love very much rich Welsh culture. Thank you, very touched by the performance. Bravissimo!

  • Thank you for sharing. Very good voice with strength. Has Bryn Terfel sang it? If so, please tell me which CD has it, thanks.

  • fantastic control, pitch, and narrowing (covering). I would love to hear the natural ping of the voice in the room as it gets lost on the camera audio.

  • Well That was wonderful!!! - Thank you so much for letting me know it was here. so lovely to speak to you on the phone - look out for the wrinkley photos!!! xx

  • Very beautiful song.

  • Bravo! Don't mind those that tell you how you should sing or how you should sound. Singing is an extension of speech; please don't get too caught up in the production of sound (technique) it will ruin the honesty with which you communicate. You sing well. Continue to sing with your heart and let the words ring true in your mind. You have a great voice; keep it up.

    Merry Christmas.

  • Bravo. well sung and a lovely presentation of music seldom heard. thank you.

  • A wonderful voice..thankyou.

I was not always able to hear the words clearly..but SIR truly I loved the performance.

  • A rich and full voice full of the mountain breeze. Welsh singers seem so distinctive to me and they generally tend to be fuller and more powerful than what I hear elsewhere, even if one might find one or two complaints in this one. He/you should try more and post more, Id listen to them all. perhaps Nant y mynydd? I havent heard the older version in years

  • Lovely. The voice reminds me of Jon Vickers.

  • very sad indeed! And wondefully sung, not that I am an expert, but do you think your tone may just be a bit too covered? have you tried singing with a lighter timbre?

  • I sing with what I feel is my voice. I suggest you watch the discussions between Franco Tenelli, Anne Williams-King and David Bartlett under the title Science of Singing 1 - 7. Anne talks about connecting the "chest" and the "head" voice. Having read what you said, and analyzed what I have been doing over the years I may be overdoing it by now (ie, overemphasizing the baritonal qualities in my voice). But I suffer from MND which means that basically now I can only sing the way I know best!

  • It is indeed a very sad song, especially for us who have lost a brother (I wept a bit). I´m not very familiar with welsh songs, but I´ve seen your other vids of the CCJones. They´re all magnificent. Thanks!

  • nice voice...

    keep smiling;)

  • Excellent !

  • Anhygoel Mr. Puw. Llais anfarwol - Rydw'i rwan yn deall pam ddaru chi rhoi gora' i ddysgu! Unrhyw cyngerddion dros y nadolig?

Fabulous Mr. Puw. Great voice - I know understand why you gave up teaching! Are you performing anywhere over the Christmas?

  • Pathos, and hope, in this song. Many thanks.

  • Beautiful....

Just beautiful...no words can describe how nicely it is done, thanks for posting it on youtube....

  • Thank you for allowing me to hear this music. His voice had a lot of strength and that seemed to come out with the emotion of the song. I trully enjoyed this and love to hear new music ty again

  • Thank you! The song is beautiful and voice is just great.

  • Hi John,

I found your message on my youtube page. Always when I hear a Welsh song it reminds me of my beloved Paul Robeson (1898-1976)who sang several welsh songs and even made a movie made in 1938 with the name "Proud Valley" a story about the Welsh miners. Eriskay Love Lilt is a welsh song he sang for example and ofcourse "Wales". At my favourites I have some Robeson song that you might enjoy!

I wish you a Merry Christmas John,

    Friedrich from Holland

  • As a harmony part singer, I am always in awe of a soloist. You have a terrific voice, and pitch perfect! Thanks for sharing.

  • thanks for sharing this video. Even though the audio quality is not good one can appreciate nevertheless the beauty of the song. Very good voice.

    Thanks again

  • Congratulations, Greetings from Mexico.

  • Love the Welsh. Fabulous talent here. No part of the world has more to tell in song.

  • This is awesome! So full of sadness, so sensitive, so beaitiful! I like celtic music but what I had heard so far was more in the joyful streak. This is new to me. Thank you for letting me discover it!

  • I know it's old news to you, but I'm just discovering the wealth of Welsh music! Not just those who sang on stage, but these, too.

John Puw, the Cantorion Colin Jones, and so many more. Thank you for this, Solstaro.

  • You're most welcome. As promised, and by popular demand, there will be more from John very soon. Diolch yn fawr, thank you

  • I agree with grandmagrumpy. Such a treasury of music. Nice high A.'s..all of them! And then that great B flat!

  • not bad, even though it in welsh which is a pointless language

  • Il timbro di voce baritonale, che parte dal cuore con la voce comossa bravo.

Meravigliosa musica malinconica e triste, sensibile denota il sentimento Gallese,(ex celtic). bravo continua così a onorare la tua

    terra col canto.

  • lovely...thankyou for this...my dad was a welsh man and i love to hear their voices....god bless

  • Beautiful song. Wonderful lyrics. Thank you very much for the english translation.

  • Oh dear - read first then post!

It was written by R S (Richard Samuel)Hughes 1855 - 1893!! to the words of Tudno Jones (who lost a brother to the sea, hence this poem). The song apparently won the song composition competition at the Aberystwyth National Eisteddfod of 1880. Hughes is buried in Bethesda in north Wales.

  • once this blind man said i loved to listen to Spanish music he did not know the words but he loved the sound of it......same here

  • John,

I am not familiar with the piece, but am VERY impressed with your singing. Your voice is that of a robust, lirico-spinto tenor. The top seems easily accessed, and the covered sound is engaging very naturally. Were I being hyper-critical, your upper middle is a bit too open and over sung to my ear...but I like your voice very much. Bravo!

  • Beautiful! Really enjoyed this one! Thanks!

  • hynod o hyfryd diolch yn fawr iawn ir cyfieithydd am ei rannu gyda mi

    elen

  • Lovely rendition, John. The Welsh language sounds interesting. I think it's one of those that has lots of silent letters. I am interested in languages and linguistics. It would be wonderful if you would make a video about the Welsh language, history and culture.

  • Not really silent letters, but some special double letters which have different counds - but once you've got the hang of dd, ff and ll, it's almost as phonetic as Italian and much more logical than Emglish! I agree more Weldh songs would be great.

  • this is beautiful,

    are you related to John?

God bless John and grant him long life and beautiful voice ^_^

  • Thank you for your comment. To answer your question, I am not related to John but sing with him in a choir called Cantorion Colin Jones based in North Wales. John is one of our first tenors and is hugely popular amongst his fellow choristers. He also performs regularly as a soloist and also during our own choral concerts. Please visit our choir website for further details, better still, come and listen to John and the men in a concert where you will be most welcome. Diolch yn fawr

  • Bendigedig.

  • Brilliant!!!! I enjoyed this very much.
