By the way, when your Mandarin skill is at more advanced level, you might want to try watching Mandarin movies without neither English nor Chinese subtitles (by turning on and off the cc), your Mandarin skill will drastically improve, even if no Chinese people are around you, your Mandarin skill would not go down but keep improving.
If you wish to improve your Chinese vocabulary, I think there are number of ways.
(1) Study Chinese English dictionaries.
(2) Try to read and write more Chinese words as some have suggested.
(3) Watch movies - watch movies in English with Chinese subtitles, and/or watch movies in Mandarin with Chinese subtitles, pause and/or rewind at anytime should you want to review or to learn some new words.
I think learning some Chinese "成语" is a better way for you to improve your Chinese. Because each “成语” is a history story. Those stories may help you to memorize the meaning of the Chinese characters.
Hey Miss Natt! Please search for raspberryjam2. I made my one and only youtube vid (thus far) as a response to yours. BUT I can't seem to message you or post it in these comments! Argh!!
I guess it works both ways really. You could find English words in books that don't get used everyday as well. I just found out what "straw wattle" is couple of days ago. It is not even complex at all.
You were right, just keep on reading and have a dictionary by your side. It will pay off eventually.
(接上一条留言:-))speaking conventions and word choosing habits accepted by most people.by doing so,I think you can easily master a lot of advanced formal and dailylife words and know accurately when to use them, hope that helps:-)BTW i am a chinese student currently studying in the UK,i 'm still struggling with the sexy British accent(crying),one of my classmates is from Alabama and I found that the American accent is easier for me to understand:-)
Hi Jiawen~your Mandarin is good~ I think watching subtitled news or TV series can not only help you enlarge your vocabulary and find the right way to use the advanced words correctly,by hearing and reading the words simultaneously the words became harder to forget.literature books written in Chinese usually have very different habits of choosing words, which might makes you confused. So i suggest you watching mass media programs like news or TV series which reflects the current
Sometimes it's very hard to give an impromptu speech to the camera. Chinese not being your native language surely would not help. Anyway, you still speak Mandarin a lot better than I.
Very glad that you like the Chinese culture so much. Keep up the good work, whether it's running or brushing up on your Mandarin.
Nat. To answer your question about how you can improve your learning on Chinese characters and such. If you have an Iphone, go download this app from "Brothers Media" It is a live Chinese tv streaming app. Bunch of the programs on the channel have Chinese subtitles. This way it help you conjugate sentences and help you on learning the characters. As long as it doesn't hurt your eyes ;-) Cheers Limin
Part 3) These 2 youtubers lingosteve and loki2504 can speak about 6 languages fluently. I don't think there is any one more qualified to give you advice on improving your Chinese on Youtube than these 2 gentlemen.
There is this website called italki.com, which I think is pretty good for getting feedbacks on one's writings.
Learning a foreign language is hard, and I totally feel you. It's a lifetime learning process.
Part 2) you have to see them been used in different contexts, as if you have to see a new object from different angels in order for you to fully understand the object. Not only that you have to understand their meanings, but you also have to incorporate them into your writings and daily conversations. You also need native speakers who will correct your language mistakes, so you get feedbacks on your speech, and avoid making the same mistakes again.
Part 1) I've been living in the US for 14 years, but my English fluency level is still at intermediate level. To reach the advanced level seems to me will take at least 4 or 5 more years if I study deligently, and to practice English more often with Americans. My view in regard to vocabulary is that it's hard to broaden your vocabulary simply by memorizing words from a dictionary. Doing so will not make you fully understand the meanings of the new words, you have to see them ...(continued)
每个中文学生的中文不如我 - means the language proficiency of every Chinese language student is inferior to mine. I guess you meant 我的中文不如每个中文学生 ? By the way your 中文 is better than most Chinese here in Singapore I reckon haha.
@kakashi1982 Your translation is right! It's a tongue in cheek joke... "Everyone's Mandarin is better than mine..." -- I certainly don't think my Mandarin is better than everyone else's!
Watch Chinese TV serials? CCTV's dramatization of Romance of the Three Kingdoms? Or perhaps the dated (but still hilarious) Journey to the West starring Liu Xiao Ling Tong.
What are you talking about ?! Your spoken Chinese is awesome! You sound like my teacher...how did you get so good? And how long have you been studying Chinese?
well, maybe u can also watch some chinese tv shows to improve your chinese i think...at least this is the way that i'm using to learn english now :)
