It comes thru so clearly that it bugs this guy that Bill Cosby went on to be BIG & he was just another 2nd rate run of the mill white guy, dime a dozen actor. I' never taught him anything...oh-except one little jewel, then he listened 2 ME- & that's why he became all he became.....This guy was just the straight man, Bill was the show.
@MrLouie670 Have you ever actually WATCHED "I Spy" ? I have seen the entire series, and actually Cosby played the "straight man" and Culp was the wisecracking playboy, and Culp was the MUCH better actor at the time, Cosby came across as stiff and wooden at times, though he loosened up as the series progressed. To say "Bill was the show" is hogwash, Culp helped create and write the show and it was the chemistry between them that made it a hit. Culp was the indispensable one.
"...Carbon stars and gas giants inhabited by sentient fungi, worlds stretched thin across the membrane where they intercept, impossible to describe with our limited vocabulary." Sounds the same or near the same.
@tall32guy Robert Culp was the voice actor for Dr. Breen in Valve's Half-life 2. Dr. Breen was the Earth Administrator, and Administrator of the Combine Regime. Dr. Breen is often seen in his public televised Breencasts to the Citizens of City 17, and one of the main opposing figures forcing the oppression on the Citizens. You may youtube "Dr. Breen" or "half-life two" and you would see his brilliant work. :)
The racial comments bring back memories. I remember how uncomfortable my Michigan parents were letting we children watch "I Spy" because of the mixed race friendship and because so many of the stories were in Mexico. Dad eventually became a fan and loved all of Bill Cosby's work after that point. Robert Culp is right...by those two not commenting on race, they made the deepest impact.
Damn, I thought he upped the ante to have an epic voice in Half life 2. But he actually talkes like that x) Too bad we won't hear him in other Half life entries..
Culp, you were awesome as a charismatic villain.. :)
Thank you Mr. Culp for a wonderful show and many entertaining viewings! You and Cos changed the America that was, for one that is better. God Bless you and R.I.P.
Good interview. Good stories. I am an old fan of "I Spy" and I have always loved those two guys. Nice to hear the story again of "Operation Breadbasket." I remember it well.
I will miss this man. Fine actor, often underrated.
@Josabooba yea but thats one of the lines that those 2 citizens say as you go through that s shaped fence to those nova prospect trains and get stopped by barney
Re: Robert Culp It didn't hit me till this morning. I was doing my job and it hit like a rock. I was 11 Years old in 1967. I never got over him in that role. Not even as I sit and watch this clip. He'll always be one of the two in that script. Gosh seems like yesterday. God bless his family and loved ones. Daniel
I learned how to behave in the south in high school watching these two great actors on TV. I wanted to be as cool at they were and later (when I became a cop) the relationship between these two great men was an influence on the way I tried to do my job. I still have a couple of the I Spy paperbacks
"I stand in sweaty admiration of the wonderfulness of your goodness and the goodness of your wonderfulness...."
The first born in every family is always dreaming of the older brother or sister he or she doesn't have, to protect, to be the buffer, provide the wisdom, shoulder the blows and make things right. Bob was the answer to my dreams.
No matter how many mistakes I made on "I Spy," he was always there to teach and protect me.
Their onscreen chemistry has never been surpassed. I have a bunch of I-Spy dvds....they are still funny. I always thought though, that Robert Culp should have gotten at least one Emmy!
We watch the reruns of I Spy here in Seattle and are really pleased to be reminded of just how great the stories are, the direction and acting. It all stands up just as well as any current episodic drama, probably better. Bob, you are still needed, C'mon, give us something!
@idioticproduction100 No not city 17 but city 14. That sentence was said by a citizen at the train station at the beginning of Half-Life 2 if i remember correctly. Perhaps he had just arrived to city 17 from city 14 and did not expect that Dr. Breen's propaganda was in city 17 also.
There are few relationships between male actors that have as much affection as that between Robert Culp and Bill Cosby. The only others I can think of that are as close off screen would be Clooney/Pitt and Damon/Affleck.
God, I can't even listen to this guy anymore without thinking of him sending out hordes of Combine death squads while talking patiently on a huge tele-screen, hahaha. Culp is awesome.
how about culps white tennis sneakers and pegged white pants... he set a style. & black socks???and the he would run ... and I SPY introduced the KARATE CHOP
