Saw this truly heroic performance at the 84 Olympics by this tough man. Like Ashford at the 1983 World Championships, only injury could defeat the great Jamaican sprinter.
MCTnF, thanks for posting. You are right, this is a truly legendary performance. As roger3594 says, one of the great 400s of all time right up there with Lee Evans Olympic win, Herb McKenley's relay leg and MJ's Seville gold. Respect to Bert Cameron and thanks to YT may the younger athletes remember his competitive greatness.
im a big 400m fan and i still think this is one of ,if not the greatest 400m ever run . Cameron gets a cramp at 130m hops for 50m then starts running again passes 200m in 22.6, runs 10.8,11.7 for his 3rd /4th 100ms ,he was not fit to race in the final the next day but given that he hopped for 40-50m and still ran 45.10 ,he would have given Babers who ran 44.27 for gold a good run for his money.camerons best at the time was 44.58 , we can only guess what he could have run if he was fit .
Yep! we really thought that was our year (both Jamaica AND Saint Jago High School). Unfortunately he couldn't run in the final which I think was one by the American Babers.
I remember watching this race and thinking the hope of a nation was in trouble. I was Bert's biggest idol, remember watching him run @ the National Stadium when I was in high school and running the 400m myself. I was very dissapointedwhen he did not get to run the final. To me he is the greatest quater miler and this race is the greatest 400m race, to suffera cramp , drop out of conention and came storming back to qualify like nothing was ever wrong. Bert you are a true world champion.
I was there for this. Unbelievable. Sit down, Michael Johnson.

In 1923, Eric Liddell fell to the ground in an international 400m race, and had to make up 20 metres on his opponents, but managed to win the race.
