I somehow can't imagine a conductor these days trying to interest kids of this age in something as technical as sonata form - you'd have as much luck convincing them of the joys of gardening.

Leonard Bernstein is one of these Great Minds. You mention gardening, which makes me think of Alice Waters; people may debate the contributions of her Edible Schoolyard program, but at the very least, through this program, she appears to have enticed some school children to discover the joys of gardening.
