  • What a tear jerker of a film. Powerful and effecting--and one of the classics that still touches people in some way. I think some of these issues still are hidden in our 'open' society.

  • Today, it would probably be no big deal BUT ... she looks 100% white. She looks like a Natalie Wood type. Back in those days if she were to date a black man, they probably would have been killed by some white people or at least seriously hurt on more than one occasion. The way I see it, she had no choice but to be white. I felt sorry for her mom though. Tough situation all around.

  • You know, funny you should say that. I'm pretty sure that Natalie Wood was actually considered for this role...

  • It would be interesting to know how African-Americans felt about this movie in 1959...

  • well the same ? i am asking me tto cuz i am black but just 18 yet

  • Well my grandmother said it was a good movie but it was interesting how in the 59 version they did not use a real bi-racial actress to play the part but in the original when racism was just really bad, they actually used a real bi-racial actress. Both versions were good.

  • the actress in original was fully black her name is Fredi Washington Google it

  • Yes I know who the original actress is. She was very pretty.

  • @17snaxaday yes fredi washington was a beautiful black woman from the original imitation of life but she was very fair skinned with green eyes and they considered her the type that could actually pass for white, as a matter of fact they told her they would make her a huge star if she choose to pass as white and continue her career as a white actress but she refused

  • The opinions are pretty much the same. I've asked around through the years.

  • Well I can tell you how I feel about it now old lady Merle. WAIL TOUBOB!

  • Me too. I'll ask my grandmother about it.

  • It depended on how they stood with regards to the budding civil rights movement.

One paper in LA refused to run ads for the film, because they objected to the characterization of the Black mother. They thought she was too "Mammy" like. Most of the other black journalists loved the film, and were proud that their plight, as second class citizens, was being told.

  • wow...

I didn´t even know that movies by my grand uncle are on youtube oO thats funny!

...and weird...maybe i gonna watch them someday!

  • amazing movie

  • What a great classic, however it does bring tears to my eyes, expecially at the end of the movie.

  • NO hjfhjhgjj ! You are the racist brat.

  • yeah, sarah jane as child does look hispanic. I looked it up...the actress, Karin Dicker, is "of Jewish descent."

  • Yeah The actrist who played older sarah jane is half jewish and half hispanic

And yes people jewish is a race

  • they used to be a race but not anymore.

  • uh, jewish is not a race. and neither is hispanic. you have been misinformed.

  • thats the prettiest mullatto ive ever seen she almost looks spanish!

  • what do you mean the prettiest mulato "she almost looks spanish".. as in from spain. spainish is a nationality and not all spanish people look the same. or did you mean she looks latina. which still wouldn't make sense because not all latinos look the same. In the dominican republic, cuba and puerto rico as well as brazil colombia costa rica latinos are often times jet black of african descent. while the majority are mixed. point is cant judge a book by its cover.

  • She's not mulatto although she is bi-racial. Her mother is Mexican her father is Jewish.

  • can someone upload the whole movie?

  • that's the best film i ever see..... great!

  • I picked up the DVD a year ago for $20. Worth having this masterpiece of its genre in one's collection.

And at Feb 2009 'Annie' and ' Sarah-Jane' are still with us... 86 and 72 respectively. Both women look great too.Check google under Susan kohner.

  • I have seen it when I was 7 or 6 too. I had it on a video tape and there is no one I've showed the movie and didn't cry (including me). It's an amazing movie!!

  • where can i found the whole movie, please!

  • this is one hell of a movie!!! i saw this movie when i was 7 years old and it made me cry!!! twenty years later, and it still make me shed a tear.

5 starts out of 5 (CLASSIC)

  • Certainly one of the best films ever made!!

  • hmmmmmm passe blanc

  • This movie looks intresting. i want to watch it all in parts but its all over the place lol. I'll have to look out 4 it on tv instead.

Im proud to sayy that when i was 3 i loved black dolls.I used to take it with me everywhere i went.

  • That's awesome! I'm not black but I had two black dolls as well--and I thought they were gogeous.

    Beauty has no colour--just a face. :D

  • I love this movie

  • My grandfather is white, my great grandmother is half white also....my mother is half white and this movie makes many feel uncomfortable because they have to face issues that they try to avoid but have no problem acting/lashing out on.

  • This movie is on right now on TCM (I have it on DVD too) but what a movie! This is so gut-wrenching...first time I saw it, it ripped my heart out! Beautiful movie and to hear Mahalia Jackson sing is just awesome!!

  • If you are able to, check out a copy of 'Black Presidents'.

BE SURE TO VOTE THIS NOVEMBER.

  • Many whites in USA and Britain have african ancestry.

  • Their grand parent told them it was Native American LOL

  • I have uploaded the trailer for this film

  • sad still to this day some black people still wish to be white...

  • Some whites want to be black, it is a mixed up world.

  • Being biracial my daddy made me watch this movie while he was alive. At first I resented him for making me do so, but I tell you right now, this is a MUST SEE for anyone who is of mixed heritage of any kind. The message is simple, be true to yourself, it does no good to lie when everyone will find out eventually.

    Peace

  • This is a MUST SEE for EVERYBODY.

Without this film, there probably might not have been a 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner'.

  • i still Hate this movie i only can bare to watch the funeral. I know that sounds dumb but it is true.

  • ´How am I ment to tell my child, she was born to hate¨´ I just wanna say thanks for keeping the tragic mulatto myth alive, this movie and itś motives are rarely questioned.

  • For those of you who don't know, the original version of this movie was in black and white and it came out sometime in the 1930s and starred Louise Beavers as the black mother. Ironically, the lady that played her daughter was really mixed with black and white, it's funny they didn't use a real biracial actress to play this part especially since this version was made many years lady.

  • Susan Kohner was convicing as mixed-race. She has beautiful features and gorgeous olive skin. Fredi Washington if anything looks whiter with her alabaster skin and ice-green eyes.

  • Susan Kohner and John Gavin (Steve Archer) in real life are both of Hispanic descent. Fredi Washington was really a lightskinned black woman that devoted her life for real for helping black people.

  • fredi washington was a phenomenal actress. she was offered stardom- the level of Garbo, if she would deny her race and become a white actress. Fredi refused to deny her race for wealth & stardom. she chose instead to fight for the civil rights of black people.she started the Negro Actors Guild 1937. the Guild would lobby against stereotype casting by Hollywood of black actors & against discrimination.

this world suffered a great loss- it was never to realize the talent of Fredi washington.

  • Well said. She was an amazing woman!

  • Really a great movie. So darn sad, it about kills you once in awhile. Thanks for sharing.

  • Definitely one of the best movies of All time especially because of the message it brings could you upload it in parts the full movie?

  • If I;m not mistaken, that little blonde girl was in an an episode of the Twilight Zone, "Nightmare as a Child".

  • Yes, that was Terry Burnham in that episode.

A few years later, she starred with Bob Hope in a movie called 'Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number'.

  • Cool :)

  • Great Remake~

    Thanks!!

  • Plz upload the whole film!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • John Gavin was a hunk!!!

  • i LOVE this movie!
