Fighting over music and who is better is as pointless as a broken pencil. If you like it, listen to it. If you don't, don't condemn those who do. If someone was to tell me their favorite band is a bunch of guys who just snap their fingers, then good for them, it makes them happy
Maybe Max Creek would have some more fans if all of their youtube videos didn't suck. This is old but it at least sounds decent. Max Creek is washed up and now that is why he's sucking on Mike Gordon's skin flute so he can make a dollar. The only thing he has in common with Trey is a Languedoc.
@SuperfluousGrizzly seeing them indoors is way more intense. maybe you'd have better things to say if you weren't judgemental. they are not washed up. they area always on. there's no sucking of any phallus. creek and phish have been friends for a long time. they would watch creek as they grew up. they opened for creek in vt on 11-11-89, mike has sat in with the boys since i cant remember when, usually in VT, Boston and Provi.
ooh stop it phishheads--creek is different(Better in my opinion)but different-----Phish ruined a great scene---goddamn richkids showing up yelling"who got doses"---Phish FANS put the scene more mainstream than anyone ever wanted---sorry about the sour grapes BUT.....
@owharfrat72 grow up old man, there are shitty people in every scene. Don't try to act like the "young ones" ruined it because they are the only people you can see on your lawn. There were trustafarians and wooks when the dead toured. Hell, most of the Original phish fans were dead heads who were so fried out they couldn't go back into "normal life" and needed a new band to follow. Phish didnt make "jam bands" too popular, Touch Of Grey did.
@owharfrat72 you are redic for real. Saw my first dead show in 89 and the first thing I hear was who has my liquid. Touch of grey made it popular and guess what the scene is still underground point the balme at stupid people not great bands like phish who btw i dont even like but they sure can play
Recently Creek has been having soem of the greatest shows ever...
I think they are sounding better than ever
If you havnt gotten to a recent dead concert go
also i am John Riders son, and this whole argument betweeen Creek and Phish is rediculous...but comin up listening to creek since i was a a month old, I gotta go with Creek
Creek and Phish aren't really that much alike. Phish is a beast on the court right now and nobody can deny that. Creek doesn't appear to ever venture into the deek dark abyss and explore other interpretations of sound quite as eloquently as Phish or any of the Grateful Dead groups (The Dead, Further, Dark Star). Creek is a different style to me entirely.. they are very rock and roll oriented and that is a good thing... but without variety everything becomes monotonous. Phish is on fire! :)
Bill Kreutzmann on Murawski: "hes a total bright light. Hes totally fluent in his playing and he plays all different styles. He builds and builds and builds. . . Hell play some lines and just keep building it. A lot of guitar players you think, Ok, theyre done with their solo, but hes just getting going. . . Thats how I related him to Jerry — they both have great imaginations and know how to stretch out, which I find to be the most interesting music. "
comparing the bands is pointless and same with anything, you know what they say about opinions, everyone has them. but i will say this. Scott Murawski is much better than Trey. I mean cmon, if you think otherwise, you're either smoking some bad $hit or you haven't heard X rip it up.
Well I just came off of Mike Gordon's tour & I can tell you that comparing those 2 guitarists is just as pointless. They have totally different playing styles. Both rock freakin ass! Trey has that very distinctive "build & release" style of playing. Scott has a more classic style. Very well rounded. But I wouldn't say either one is better than the other. I love them both!
Phish played this song a total of 3 times live, probably learned on the fly. The point at which they played this tune, these guys had only been together for a few years. Creek has probably played the tune hundreds of times live and have been playing together for 30 something years. It's a cover, I wouldn't expect it to be better. But I think it shows a tremendous amount of respect and talent for such a young band to cover a jamband that never made it out of the bar/club scene. Smokin tune tho.
I love Phish, and I play in a band w/ Mark Mercier (keys from Creek, the Marks Brothers), but have to say, Phish doesn't do this song justice. Creek blows the roof off when they play this tune!
I actually agree with you there. If you listen to Phish from the early years up till about 96' they're a far far tighter band. This is from 87' and proves it.
I agree, these discussions of who is better, etc. are just plain silly. Phish did something many, if not most, bands are reluctant to do: they got personally involved in the business end of playing music for a living. And they had great material, and a truly talented lineup, all capable improvisors and composers. I agree with another poster here. Phish is not my favorite band of all time. Trey squeals a little too much for my taste. But as a musician, I can't help but appreciate their music.
ccdeweese man, you honestly want to say that max creek is a million times better than phish? wow, that brings the term "different strokes for different folks" to a whole new level for me... I'd have to say I disagree with you, 1 million %.
Phish became a major act because they were a great band. They handled their own "marketing" until they got to big to manage on their own. Then they got people to take care of it for them. Phish became a major act because of the music.
Murawski is clearly a better guitar player than Trey and Mercier is on par with Page. Gordon is levels beyond Rider (who is a very one dimensional bassist). No drummer for Creek can touch Fishman. Creek relied almost exclusively on Murawski to write the bulk of their original music and while his catalog is just wonderful, Phish peeled of TONS of popular songs. Max Creek will always be my favorite band but Phish is better. And I don't like Phish. I think that's a fair comparison.
did someone here say that creek is a BETTER band than Phish, wow I can't believe that I actually read that. Yes, we all have opinions, but really you can't be serious....11-2-98 enough said...ok I will just take it as you were joking...good one.
i agree with maybe203. this is a week cover of an awesome song. they are talented musicians, but will never be on same level as creek. sorry phish heads.
@ScottieGAcoustic well, creek's version of Back Porch is played in double time and average a mere 3.5 minutes. this is slower and longer and says too much. but imitation is a form of flattery.
dont wanna start an argument, but PERSONALLY.. meaning we all have valid opinions...Creek is the better band w/ better guitar player and better keyboard player.
the guitar is a Time. a burlington company that languadoc worked for in the 80s... the company burned down or something and well.. languadoc makes his own now..
The end of this song reminds me of the beginning of Scent of a Mule.
There was a question about Trey's guitar, I think it's either a Fender or an Ibanez, but it's sort of hard to tell for sure. ...leaning towards ibanez
this goes to show that more expensive equipment doesn't really make a huge difference musically. Notice how Trey's monitors are the same that he still has today. Phish's repertoire wasn't as huge in '87, but the talent was definitely there.

Comparing Phish and Creek
Trey vs Scott - equal
Page vs Mark - Mark
Mike vs John - Mike
Phish vs Creek drummers - Phish
Phish vs Creek - equal (one could outshine the other on any given night)
Overall winner - Creek. Their shows cost about $15.
