Actually i think that modern irish dancing was formed as a reaction against the Sean nos style of dancing. the leaders of the gaelic revival wanted to formalise and codify irish dancing and rejected sean nos style because it was too free! If anything sean nos style of dancing has more of a legitimate right in Irish culture than anything in modern Irish dancing!
Sean nos just means old style - 3stewstapha3 is right in saying that it is GENERALLY applied to sining but it can be applied to anything - sean nos fiddle playing, sean nos piping, sean nos dancing - so douglowder is also right in saying that is very different to irish step dancing which only originated in late 19th century as part of the gaelic revival! Sean nos dancing is MUCH older and yes it is still mostly found in connemara!
"Sean nos" refers generally to solo singing in Gaelic and is popular in Scotland as well. The lad was merely freestyle stepdancing with tap shoes which you'll frequently see at any good craic!
wombab143: that style of dancing is called "sean nos" dancing. It originated in Connemara and is very different from competition Irish step dancing.....
Can't make my mind up about the hands of the dancer and whether I like them swinging around at random like that. Bit distracting I suppose but I like that he seems freer than the usual Irish dancer.
Actually my friends, that is called Ottawa Valley Stepdancing, and both Dan and his father are two of the best at it!
