@MsWindcatcher I'd love to see how yours came out. As for mine, it's doing well :) I may go back to Ajarn Anek in Thailand later this year to continue/finish my back.
@whitekryptonite91 I could be wrong but my understanding was that Sak is the act of sticking with the needle, and Yant is the tattoo. For instance, the tool is called the Mae Sak and sometimes the pattern is called Yantra. Spencer at the sakyant website would know for sure.
@tinfamily Oh and that said, I'd love to go to Cambodia again and learn more about Khmer culture. The people seemed very nice & genuine. I'd like someday to meet a Khmer Ruessi, but from what I hear you have to go way out of the town to get to one.... someday :)
@whitekryptonite91 This is from his website "Sak Yant; สักยันต์ Sak - meaning "to tap" or, "to tattoo", and Yant, meaning "Yantra". Originally derived from the Sanskrit word "YANTRA", meaning sacred geometrical design." Check it out, it's a great website. if you google sak-yant you will find a link :)
thank you for the information, just another two questions, i am interested in visiting Ajarn Prak Sokdarenn so is a translater needed and would he tattoo a female?
@saskiavanoorschot When I visited I had a driver I kept over the days & the driver helped translate. I don't remember how much English he spoke. I am also unsure if he would tattoo a female. His information is in the info section of the video or on my site (or PM me). Best to e-mail him first. Have a great week :)
i loved watching this video and am interested as i have never seen or heard of this tattoo form being done with a modern gun. you mentioned how you prefer getting it done the traditional way but wich one was actualy more painful? and do you still consider your new yant to be as strong as the others?
also dose this particular man do the 'yant ha taew' design, wich is the 5 rows of Khom Script?
@saskiavanoorschot Personally I think the traditional way is less painful than the gun. I much prefer the needle as for me, it makes a "whole" experience. I general terms, I prefer the ones I got by hand. Ajarn Anek, He does the 5 rows, can can do it in oil, red or black (I believe). If you look at my videos of Ajarn Anek I have a link to his website in the description or just head over to my travel blog and see my sak yant webpage and it has all his contact info. Thx!
Hey Ken- many westerners(Americans) get Sak Yants? I was always was mesmorized in a way watching the old school vids with the traditional methods such as the piece in the middle of your back. Have always wanted to get one since my other tatts have deep meaning to me, I think Yants are on a whole nother level of that as well. Nice pieces, take care and will be watching your other vids as you make them
@JimmyR1rider Hi Jimmy! I'd say quite a number, but the total is probably a small subsegment of people with tattoos which is already a small segment of the western population as a whole. I think it's still not widely known, but has gained some recognition since Angela Jolie had hers done at Ajarn Noo. For more information, one person doing research on it is Spencer Littlewood (facebook id=661399054) and you can follow him perhaps. He runs a sakyant website and is going to release a book soon.
im just saying, this is not how you sak yant. when geting these kind of yant u need like a monk or something to do it for u. also while the niddle is being push in to your body , the monk have to say some prayer or some crips, that little kid dont know crap, so you're wasting and money and have a scard in your back.
This isn't even English. He did a thorough explanation of how he got the yant and here you are criticizing him in backwater English. Dont disgrace our people with these comments again
@ Sonohkong - An offering was made at the beginning, chant was done beforehand, chant after, all the same as my other yants. I was given the choice of mae sak or gun and in this one instance, for several reasons, decided on the gun. There is debate as to whether one can have an authentic sak-yant via a gun. My advice is to do the research, and then do what you believe. If one chooses to take a week to hike to a cave to find a ruessi, or use an ajarn, i don't judge them.
@tinfamily o yeah, then how do u know that the guy that is giving u the tattoo know how to chant??? these young bitches dont know shit. they are only doing it for money. if they just make one mistake then the yant wont work.
@IgnitedGSR how am i disgracing our people?? and what the hell u talking about backwater english?? this is english retard. he talking in english. and i know he got a yant from an Ajarn. im just saying that the Ajarn is a rip off and he dont know how to sak yant, he only doing it for money.
Thanks. I am pretty happy with where it's at now (with the Tigers), but after I lose some weight and stabilize, I'm thinking about going back to complete my Thai ajarn's plan. He has the entire thing mapped out in his head. Thanks again for the comment.
Hi :) I'm not Cambodian. I did love the country, the people, and the experience of being there :) I'm really looking forward to returning with my daughters so they can experience Angkor and the country for themselves. If you need the contact for the person that did my yant, just let me know.
I'm from California too. I'll PM you his contact information. The trip to Angkor Wat is very much worth it and you can get the yant while you take what may be one of the most awesome trips in your life :)
thanks for sharing, very informative, i enjoyed the back ground music which set this kind of mystical tone to the process of getting a tattoo done, cheers
My Ajarn in Thailand has a plan. It would be to finish a "frame" around the back, then I would get 2 Singha (the lions) and a large Erawan (3 headed elephant) in the lower middle half of the back. I'm not sure how long it will be before I continue. There's so many things I want to do and places I want to go. :-)
I agree. I had the rest of it done with Mae Sak (the "bamboo") but we were tight on time in Cambodia, so it was a last minute thing. Not a huge regret, but if I were to do it again, I would make more time or not do it all. He did offer to do it either way. I was looking at under an hour vs. 3-4 and I didn't want to keep my wife waiting that long. But...yeah...I actually feel the experience more with the Mae Sak. Check out my other vids, you'll see it :)
For my needs, I have not chosen the ones for martial arts. My Ajarn in Thailand has helped guide me and mine are good for business. Interestingly, Ajarn Sokdarenn in Cambodia has many protective yants that he does, including some I had never heard of before (vanish when being pursued by enemies, that kind of thing) that he does for Cambodian soldiers (and other people who have to fight...) but right away said if I don't fight (or have combat) in my life to not get them.
So no, I wouldn't think I'm bulletproof yet. I did fall into some bamboo stakes. They tore my shirt and didn't even leave a mark on my skin, but is that proof of anything? I don't know. I just accept it for what it is.
if you believe in this magical style of tattoo then should not get it with a machine. it should be done with bamboo and followed by a ritual and prayer. i got one and wasnt allowed to eat red meat for 24 hours and now i am bulletproof hahaha
oh snaps i didnt mean to give you the thumbs down lol sorry i meant to give you thumbs up...i did a presentation about sak yant in college and i know where youre comin from.

i was being sacastic about being bulletproof yes, but i do believe it brought me good luck and will think about getting more when im back in cambodia in a few months...
@ camae62 - No, I'm of Chinese descent, born in America.
@rufusbone ah. ok. I have yant that offers protection as well, but I don't think about it, positively or negatively. To me, it it what it is. I did have something happen where my shirt was penetrated with something but I didn't even get a red mark, but I would not be one to go around saying I'm anything proof :) It is, only, what it is :)
I will gonna get a couples of Yant Tattoo myself next time I go there. Its look awesome. and yes, back in the old days a lot of Khmer men were having Sak Yant for protections such as soldiers that in the war and Men that practice Martial arts. Its really look great on you sir!
Thank you! I treasure these experiences and hope to explore more of Cambodia sometime soon. I have a dream of going there for 6 months to volunteer to teach English or something. Time will tell if I can realize that dream :)
I ensure you guys, to have this real stick on your skin, there must be pain during the process. Yant Sak (Simple English holly tattooO is believed to have some hidden strength to help when you face any obstacle (but based on what Kind Yant Sak you have). For the Angkor Period or earlier, All Khmer Soldiers had Yant on their bodies, didn't they?
It is a mysterious belief that Khmer has for about or more than 2 millenniums of years.
I forgot the name in Khmer, but the one he is working on is for "what I say" to be "well received" in the ears of the listener. Good for singers, or business where you have to talk or negotiate.
He does the martial ones as well, for military or fighting, but I choose to not look for those for myself, as I don't need them day to day :)
It's great to see something like this posted up. I actually was recently in Cambodia and had been looking into getting a tattoo of similar sort.

Hello. Great video! I am headed to Siem Reap next weekend. I got my first sak yant at Wat Bang Phra and would love to get one in Siem Reap too. Do you have a good contact for the monk in Siem Reap.
Disclaimer: He's not a monk. I was limited on time and didn't really do as much homework as I like, but he's very close to (one of) the entrance(s) to Angkor, so you can check him out and see if he's suitable for you.

Khmer come from the Khmer King Kampu originated from India who married to the Native Queen Mera of Naga in south east asia. Kampu & Mera created Kampuchea and Khmer dedicated to the native people living in south east asia.
Thanks for posting this vid. It's good to see the traditional tattoo art continuing in Cambodia. Thanks for shedding some light on this subject, because it's widely practice in Thailand. In Khmer, we pronounce it "sak yon"
That is mostly correct. The one I received in Cambodia was for my voice to be well received by the people who hear it. It's good for business. I have been avoiding ones that specifically have to do with martial arts/fighting/war skills as I have no need for them. I don't have much need to be knife proof or be able to disappear from my enemies ;)
Thanks for the comment Seksykhmaigirl :). Just make sure that you understand the meaning of what they are going to put on you and the rules associated with it :) (check the sak-yant website for more information on it)

Do You Need a Special Invitation to Receive the Tattoo? Because I Really Want One.

Cost: Varies, but about 20-40 for a small one
Invitation: No, you don't. but you do need to find a master who does it.
Pain: Depends on your threshold for pain, but I'd say "not that bad". I prefer the maesak to the gun, having had both now.

Sterilization is only alcohol & fire.
No autoclave in the shop.
You are taking a chance. I have read less-so with the mae sak (the hand needle) as it doesn't penetrate as deep but you are certainly taking your chances compared to a place with an autoclave. :)

If Sak Yant is "powerful", why worry about
sterilization? If it is true, the art sanctify the
subject, therefore, no need to be concern
with the process.
