  • I would much rather the USA was paying for space exploration than wasting billions on Iraq and achieving nothing. The Lunar landing was the Apogee and crowning achievement of the USA to date. The spin-off technologies paid for the mission many times over. Is the USA too moribund and decadent to go to Mars ? Will they out-source it to China in a few years time ? Ok, your Prez is a retard, your economy is fucked, and your wars are unwinable... Space you can do. NASA still works.

  • $500 Billion in Iraq in 5 years.

$600 Billion on ALL Space Exploration in 50 years.

Same price for both... disproportionate results.

US should spend that money on research and development... or give it back to the US taxpayers and let us spend it on funding private space companies... Like Space X.

  • Might want to focus on the 1 million americans who are thrown out of their houses first. before trying to do something like that?

  • Private home-ownership has nothing to do with public trust. Home ownership is free market... space exploration via NASA is public trust. If you are suggesting that NASA's funding be diverted to pay mortgages, that would amount to about $25 a year per mortgage held in the US.

Seems like a lot to give up for nothing in return.

Petition the government for a fix on inflation, and hold mortgage companies accountable for giving out high risk loans. That is the solution to the housing issue.

  • @Eisenmond Thats their own damn faults for taking on loans they couldn't pay !

  • Lol, the Free Market is the American Way. If people fall foul of debts they should never have entered into, it is just like animals falling foul of predators in nature, and nature takes its course. So people end up homeless in their thousands in the richest country on Earth ? That is merely market forces correcting their excessive lifestyle. Most first world trash cans contain treasures the third world would be proud to own or eat. Freedom is Slavery, Love is Hate, War is Peace.

  • Apparently it's round and round the Earth we go; watching the guppies; swimming slow....

but why on Earth don't we try to go, to The Red Planet, which would make one hell of a show...

Let strive for great heights; and discontinue orbiting so low....

  • Great Job! The next President has the power to advance human exploration of space, including Human to Mars projects! With a little public support, we can ensure that our country focuses on issues of progress that will benefit all mankind.

  • Congratulations for getting your video shown at the Republican debates. I am also interested in space exploration, and I hope we can achieve great things.

  • At less than one percent of the federal budget, NASA has transformed our society. During the Apollo program, this nation doubled the number of students graduating with science and technology degrees. Many of those people went on the lead the technology and communications revolution that came later. Once we seriously commit ourselves to this goal, a human mission to Mars will be a tremendous catalyst for education, technological advancement, and overall human knowledge.

  • i am from greece....i study electronic engineering....and i always loved countries that try to make our world a better place to live and give humanity new horizons to travel....

sadly the only thing that u.s.a cares about today is war...!where is nasa glory...and where all the dreams have gone?

the funny thing is that china and india...nowdays design moon bases...and missions to mars...and usa....just make wars...!

  • Which is why I am posing questions to get people ready to move on from war. NASA's 50 year budget has been $612 Billion... for 50 years.

The iraq war has spent $450 Billion in 4 years

Which one has benefitted us more? 50 years of inspiration or 4 years of war... the cost has been about the same!

  • Sadly the space program takes all the blame for the poor economy, debt and other woes. The response form the GOP candidates was weak, but they are quite happy to spend billions on defense contractors making a killing, and I really mean killing.

  • Ron Paul and Hackabee won the debate

  • Unless you can shield astronauts from cosmicc radiation, (by lugging ~ 500 tons of material to Mars for the trip) you probably won't get to Mars, because most astronauts would probably be suffering from radiation poisoning by high-energy protons, etc. wreaking havoc with their cells. It would be a 1 in a trillion chance to get to Mars, even by 2020. There was a SciAm article on it some time back. You should read it.

  • Read "Mars Direct" by Robert Zubrin. In it he explains that there will be little effect from space radiation with a few minor precautions. The overall exposure to space radiation will increase terminal cancer probability by less than 3% over the astronauts life... not too bad.

  • Good Question! It would be nice if the president would try to support space exploration if possible.

  • Thanks! It was my pleasure to ask it!

  • good question

  • vote ron paul

  • Good luck on all that. NASA is an unwieldy beast that exists to devour cash. Don't count of them to get you to Mars, at least not in this century (or until they can figure out a way to make the red planet pay out).

  • Great question. there was a historian, Frederick Jackson Turner, from Wisconsin, who said man was at his best when there was a new frontier for him to discover. Space is that new frontier and their is so much to learn from it, it would be exciting to see that race to innovation once more.

  • I grew up so excited about space travel! I devoured sci-fi & books on astronomy, etc. The coming of the space shuttle seemed like just the start of a new golden age when we'd finally place ourselves permanently in space. I guess the ISS counts but barely! Can you imagine if we went to Mars & found fossils? People have no problem with big government wasting billions for no results, but think space exploration is a waste! It's just apathy!
