Metallica couldnt figure out a Tull song.I was amazed at their ignorance at the awards.Any rock band in the business would have applauded Tull for the award.
Ian Anderson has always been such a glaring front man, the rest of Tull has always been in the shadows (for me, anyway) ...What a treasure it is to find these Martin Barre interviews....may sound pretentious, he says...well, it doesn't...Barre's sincerity
shines through every much as Anderson's showmanship.
@jcantrell7 Yes, you are right. I think that happen also with Queen. In that way The Beatles never had a front man and then all four are under the sunshine. Nice the see this inteview with someone else (apart from Ian), from Jethro Tull.
I am with you, Ian, your voice is as lovely to me as the first amazing time I heard you at 14, and since then has carried me thru many a tearful time, and joyous, too. You are my friend.
When I hear his voice today.. my only reaction is to raise a glass to a man who gave us wonder in his youth, enlightenment in middle age and compassion for how far we have all come with him through the years.
A voice that bears the scars of the years as does the weathered face of a man who has lived a life.
I am seeing Ian for the first time in 36 years, next month. I admit I am surprised at his shaky singing voice, and I don't know what to expect in October, but I DON'T CARE. It's Ian, and the voice I've loved since I was 15 years old.
sure his voice is not brilliant now but when i saw him last year it was still good and a lot better than when i saw him on the Agualung live tour and as for a new singer NO WAY it just wouldnt be JT without his distinctive vocals
JT made some amazing music - but they are so DULL in interviews.
I saw JT live about 4 year backs and they were sensational, except for Ian Anderson's singing. His flute and guitar are profound, there is no need to spoil it with singing. They should have got a new singer when he could no longer hit the notes. I hate to be negative, but the singing of the last 10 years ruined it..
I am surprised MB is not mentioned so much when people discuss great guitarists.
I remember once reading that IA admitted to straining it back in the day & had to get it treated. He had to alter the way he sang after that (like around the early-mid 80s, as I recall) - hence, the different vocal quality.
Plus, I'm sure smoking cigarettes for years hardly helped.
But a new singer to perform Tull songs??? No effing way, my friend.
They will have to retire those songs when he's done.
it looks like martin is playing a doyle dykes sgnature model taylor guitar. can anyone confirm this? i wonder if he also knows doyle and how he is probably the greatest guitarist in the known world?
It seems Martin is as well spoken as Anderson. I really do need to pick up his solo albums. I must be the only person on the planet who finds the Aqualung solo one of the least interesting examples of his work. The blistering guitar solo from A New Day Yesterday on the live Bursting Out is my favorite -- no, maybe it's the tour-de-force opening to Minstrel in the Gallery, or almost any of his solos from the recent Aqualung Live album. Yeah, he's definitely underrated.
hey wardka, i agree with you... partially. i mean, i do find the Aqualung solo one of the MOST interesting things in his work... but he has done many more things that remain unknown/underrated. for example, i love his solo album "a trick of memory" (i want to get the others). also in all the albums, in so many songs... his guitar remains hidden, but if u pay attention... u notice it's great. also, i love the live guitar solo pibroch/black satin dancer
Aqualung is the first Tull song I listened to. When i heard the guitar solo, i thought: this is the band i was looking for. Until then, i didnt listen to music very much. Now, there's always music on (not only Tull!) in my room.
Sorry, since many of you will not be old enough to know this:
They were beaten out for an award, not actually physically beaten by the band, but I am certain that Tull could have taken those punks in a street fight too!
Didnt miss that much? Look, I hate to start fights over youtube, but thats so incredibly wrong I had to say somthing. Metallica is one of the biggest bands in the world, and are an influence to MANY musicians. Every single member is very talented at their instrument, and they've sold out stadiums all over the WORLD. Try checking out some songs like " The Unforgiven" " Nothing Else Matters" or " Fade to Black" they are all great songs that have inspired countless artists
Best interview I've seen with the dear boy to this point. Of course prior to the internet, and David Rees 23 yr old Tull magazine A New Day, there was pretty much no such thing as a Martin interview, and Ian's were rare and treasured by Tullies. The interview came well informed, is a cutie pie, and I want a date.

Ian has the perfect voice for Celtic music, and Martin is perhaps the most under-rated guitarist in rock..

Yes, the voice is not what it was.

BTW, no one can play guitar like MB either.

The sound of electric guitars was the original reason I started listening to Jethro Tull, and nothing else can beat those 70's albums.

I laugh every time I remember how that stooge in Metalicka cried over being beaten by an actual band, one of the all time great bands, Jethro Tull.
And since some of you don't remember Metalicka, don't bother about that, you did not miss all that much.
