Wouldn't it be interesting to see how well Phelps would have gone in 2008 if Thorpe was still swimming? And KumaraLove is totally correct. It was an amazing moment. Aussies wouldn't enjoy it half as much if Gary Hall Jr hadn't made the "Smash them like Guitars" comment.

Thorpe could have went even faster if he had done anything close to what Phelps does underwater. He seems to come at 5m each time...surely he couldve taken another second off from those swims. Great swimmer tho!

In the sydney 4x100m freestyle video, when Thorpe was making that turn at the last 50 m, he stayed underwater for a long time just like Phelps, that put him close to Gary Hall.

i believe the improved technology has something to do as well, the swimsuits are getting better and better,giving swimmers more efficiency. It also depends on the depth of the water as well, deep water = faster time

im a freestyler myself.. and ive studied thorpe's and phelp's freestyle.. yes, michael maybe faster due to his physicality but in stroke technique and efficiency.. NO CONTEST, its thorpe's who is excellent and superb..

Not likely that Ian would have stopped Phelps from winning the 8 Golds. Granted, Thorpe is the best freestyler in history and can beat Mike in freestyle only, most of Michael's events in Beijing were IM, butterfly and relays. Ian was horrible in IMs and less competent in fly than Phelps. Ian would have thrashed Phelps in 200m freestyle race only. The Aussie relays were always behind the Americans in Beijing. Ian alone couldn't save the Men Aussie performance in Beijing! The Aussie women rocked!

What? The Aussies beat the Americans ONCE at the 2000 Games in the 4x100m relay. In Athens, the Aussies didn't even medal! South Africa came 1st, Netherlands 2nd and US 3rd! The US has never lost the 4x200m relay or 4x100 medley relay (Olympics or any competition)! You need to get your facts straight! Type in the videos on You Tube and see for yourself! In 2003, Phelps was 18 and competed in World Championships in 200IM. Ian Thorpe was third BEHIND Michael Phelps! Check the video for yourself!
