i remember watching this with my dad when i was 8 years old and ive loved the band ever since ( im 30 now ) i even have the full concert of this on my ipod which i blast in my car all the time
Chris White playing the sax solo of his life. Never bettered and beautifully captured by the BBC Director with those sweeping left to right and overhead camera crane shots. Outstanding.
Look at about 5:01 - 5:05 ...You can almost see tears in Knopfler's eyes. If the song is bringing tears to the MUSICIANS eyes, you know it is incredibly epic.
how many of secretly wish you could relive the 80's and wear those ridiculous clothes? Come on....admit it.....you liked the spike and the mullet.....and you still have the sport coat with the shoulder pads......
I'm so glad to be able to say I was there. What a great day, hearing this still sends shivers down my spine. He can certainly make a guitar cry or sing (check the lyric in Sultans Of Swing). And millions have sung and cried along with him. Best rock guitarist the world has known....
MK must have some serious cash if he can afford to hire eric clapton as a backing guitarist. either that or clapton was a bit hard up then for some reason
wow, I wanted to check out the comments here before I played, I just came onto it from a link from Brothers in Arms, which I only just heard for the first time to recently. I'm looking forward to hearing this, Dire Straits are incredible
I've always loved this band and this song. I just met a girl the other day and I fell in love with her. We both spent an amazing time with each other, until some asshole came up and ruined it for us. But the next day, when i went to talk to her, i could only think of the lyrics in this song because thats the way it ended between me and her. I told her about this song, before it all happened, so maybe there's hope. i ain't giving up. i still got more living to do.
Go for it mate, there are not enough true romantics left in the world. If it is meant to be it will happen, or look at it this way...what have you got to lose.
THE greatest version of R&J there will ever be. Perfect intro, perfect saxaphone solo, Clapton on backing, great piano improvisation, and MK using the Brothers in Arms guitar. This is why we used to go to concerts. Shame about the feedback noise at times.
@pacomassesio Saxophonist is Chris White, Mel did the Alchemy tour in 1983. Chris joined in 1985 for the Brothers in Arms tour, he stayed with Dire Straits until they disbanded.
@pacomassesio Saxophonist is Chris White, Mel did the Alchemy tour in 1983. Chris joined in 1985 for the Brothers in Arms tour, he stayed with Dire Straits until they disbanded.
All Dire Straits´ songs are masterpieces, just love em all, there´s no band like them, they just rule. To bad i weren´t around when they played concerts like this.
knophler has to be one of the most underrated songwriters of a generation doesn't he? this, tunnel of love, telegraph road, once upon a time in the west brothers in arms, sultans of swing, private investigations and iron hand have to be some of the finest lyrics ever written. simply brilliant!!
actually i fucking hate it here but meh..... Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton will always be the best.. doesnt matter how old they get, i mean have you seen them play there shows?! if its not as good as they were when they were young ... its better!
And dont you just love that saxophone solo. Saw them live in England that guy really did it for me. Never any mention of him though. Dire Straits evoke so many wonderful memories and with Eric Clapton there as well, what more can you want. Fantastic.
.... and he was the brightest star to ever shine in my sky. Someday, the timing won't be wrong. Until that day ... there's this. Thank you for posting this.
i listen to this song all day. it's just amazing. That was real music. No sellout, no commerce, just real musicians that knew how to play their instruments and write songs.
Clapton was there because regular DS guitarist Hal Lindes became a father that day so he was occupied, so Knopfler called Eric to fill in and Clapton agreed.
Hal Lindes was sacked by Knopfler during the making of Brothers in Arms. You're thinking of Jack Sonni, who played with Dire Straits during the Brothers in Arms tour. Plus, Clapton played with Dire Straits during the warm-up concert (see YouTube), so I think it was "pretty well planned" ;-)
I was at the concert, i lived in london. What i like about these kind of conerts is that all musicians form groups and play together and it's simply wonderful and amazing. you could see also Phil collins play for the bee gees and so on. here is EC playing with Dire Straits. Just the best!
i heard every live version of the song and i can tell that this is the BEST...Chris White's solo...almost made me cry...if that doesn't happen to everybody who listens to this for the first time then he isn't human, that's what I say
It seems like a lot of musicians are on the verge of crying by the end of this... and probably the entire audience...That's how you know a song is good...when even the musicians are moved by it!
Julia, thanks for sharing this with me.

"All I do is miss you..." There's just such a palpable sense of resigned defeat and surrender. What a songwriter.
