Dude I've written some creepy riffs on acoustic guitar. You don't need distortion to sound creepy. If you want some creepy sounding riffs, just write riffs based on a tritone or use the chromatic or a minor scale.

This isn't even bad. Just because there isn't any distortion doesn't mean they suck. Plus the fact that he was able to play it clean with no sloppiness makes it even better because you can get away with anything with distortion. Also, that isn't an acoustic guitar, it's an electric that isn't plugged in.
