  • Shotguns are often "backbored", meaning that most of the bore (from the forcing cone to the choke) is slightly larger. This is claimed to reduce felt recoil and improve patterning. The recoil reduction is due to the larger bore producing a slower acceleration of the shot, and the patterning due to the larger muzzle diameter for the same choke constriction, which results in less shot deformation. Some also claim increased velocity with overbored barrels, due to larger swept volume of the barrel.

  • would a shotgun pit inside the barrel because of the bbs being shot out? ive never owned a gun... or shot one :( so im kinda new to this.

  • 1 ppl got your asshole backbored

  • A 12 bore is normally .729".

Mr Potterfield is using reamers up to .769", a significant widening of the bore.

Although this will reduce barrel pressure it is unsafe to use without reproof.

It is illegal to sell a weapon modified like this in Britain without reproof.

It would probably be designated as an 11 bore.

Firing any cartridge that does not have a plastic shot cup is likely to promote welding of the shot into lumps. Lumps like this travel a long way when fired upwards.

  • that will come in handy how much is that

  • only not taking care of a gun will let the gun get in a shape where this would be needed, if you put work into cleaning a gun well, you wont have to worry bout ever having to do this

  • curious,can you backbore a rifle??

  • @SymAmineC8H11N if you do you would also have to re rifle the barrel, and doing this will lessen the guns power and accuracy, because the gases will be able to get passed the bullet more so its not the best thing to do, kill self justing bieber

  • i have a shotgun that does not have threading at the muzzle to put a choke in. does anyone know where or if i can get it threaded?

  • @elanlover94 possibly a pipe threader

  • @elanlover94 see BRILEY

  • clean you shotgun after each time you take it out even if you dont fire it and you will never have to waste your time doing that

  • With all these special tools that a gunsmith has to buy, it is no wonder they charge so much. He may only use that tool a couple times a year.

  • @monkeyboy4746 well, that and it's a difficult thing to get into without having background in the occupation

  • its what happens when you dont take care of your gun keeping it in your closet is not good

  • @brandeno15 the trick is, you clean after every shooting session to prevent powder fouling. and every 500 shots do a very thorough cleansing of the entire gun, including replacing the lubrication oil, and any damaged parts

  • @drewnickel lol i put 10 wet patches through my barrel then use a rob with a wire brush and scrub about 20 strokes in it then another patch every 15 rounds i shoot. i shoot a .17 wildcat in br shooting style my case is bored out and its a hot load shooting 2 and 3 point groups at 100 yards at about 4100fps

  • @brandeno15 yeh, that's what you can expect when you take care of a gun. I noticed my shotgun after using lubricant after cleaning it, incresed in velocity by 10% due to the less build up to cause friction in the barrel. and it's accuracy and ease of use improved too. I got a 1760fps remington slug to go nearly 2000fps

  • After the reaming, won't the internal barrel width be larger & let the expanding gas escape? Thanks.

  • Yes, the barrel is larger in diameter.

Maybe the gas will escape, but probably not. Shotgun shells have a "wad" between the powder and the shot. The wad is like a little cup, and the wad is what keeps the gas from rushing past the shot. The plastic wad expands to fill the barrel, like base of an expanding bullet.

Trimming 2 or 3 thousands of an inch from a barrel probably won't affect the plastic wad. Of course, the barrel might explode...

    Just my 2 cents.

  • pitting is where rust has formed and eaten the metal leaving little pits

  • So then what exactly is the "Pitting"? Is it collected hardened gunpowder?
