Por que llaman a ese instrumento cuatro y no lo es. Ejemplo el cuatro venezolano tiene 4 cuerdas. Ese tiene 10 pero 5 dobles, deberia llamarse cinco ? O si ? Saludos y espero una explicacion di un musico. Gracias

El Cuatro Venezolano desde sus principios tuvo 4 cuerdas y hasta el día de hoy sigue siendo así. El Cuatro Puertorriqueño originalmente tenía 4 también cuerdas pero con el pasar del tiempo se le añadió una quinta.

Lo que tengo entendido es que tenía cuatro pares de cuerdas, y creo que fue hacia finales del siglo 19 que varios constructores empezaron a añadirle el quinto par, hasta que luego este quinto par se convirtió en norma. Emilcroes: la versión del "cuatro puertorriqueño" que ves en este video es precisamente la forma estándar del cuatro puertorriqueño actual y ya lo ha sido por muchos años.

Gorgeous performance. I am corsican and this kind of mazurka was very popular here and played on guitar, mandolin, banjolim, etc etc... As Puerto Rico have had thousands of corsican emigrants from the last mid 19th century to the first half of 20th, could this music have corsican roots or influences?

It's very possible. Thousands of immigrants went to the island in the 1800's primarily from Corsica and the Canary Islands. So it is possible that the cuatro and its music have some Corsican influence. In Puerto Rico we have names like Charlie Palmieri (famous PR pianist), Pedro Pierluisi (Presently the  Resident Commisioner from PR to Washington), Mihiel Gilormini (a famous WW2 U.S. pilot born in PR) and Mariana Bracetti (a famous PR patriot and independence leader against Spain in the 1800's).

And dont forget the first Puerto Rican to reach international heights in the sector of musical arts, the King of Tenors, the great Antonio Poali. The corsicans also saved the the coffee industry on the island and made it the best coffee in the world prior to the american invasion. The love I have for the corsicans is right there with the Spanish.

I think that the cuatro is a Corsican influence. Many Puerto Ricans, because of pride, deny that. That's because the cuatro is considered the National Instrument of Puerto Rico. Even the music that she's playing sounds Corsican. "The Royal Decree of Graces of 1815," allowed non-hispanic immigrants from Europe of the Catholic faith to immigrate to PR. As a result, many Corsicans, French, Irish and Italians settled here. The Corsicans settled mostly in Yauco and developed the coffee industry.

I dont think Puerto Ricans would deny the corsican influence of the cuatro, if they knew, or if it turns out to be true. Puerto Ricans takes pride in everything that composes us. And the corisican is one element that should be a source of great pride.

One of my goals, once I finish college, is to start researching and composing a book which would do justice to the Corsican element on this Island. Corsica and Puerto Rico are even similar politically.

You're right, the potical situation between both island are similar. Corsicans are ethnically closer to Italians are French citizens. Puerto Ricans ethnically Spanish in culture are American citizens. I don't think I have Corsican Ancestors. I do know that my grandmother was born in the Canary Islands, came to PR in 1897 (1 year before the U.S. invasion) when she was 7 months. Of the immigration to the island in the 1800's probably the biggest were from Corsica and the Canary Islands.

I knew that, I could have put a lot more but did not have the room. My friend, the auto mechanic, here in Puerto Rico is named Frank Colombani and my old friend in New York that played congas in my salsa band his name is Eddie Napoleoni. Presently the Resident Commissioner representing the island in the U.S. congress is Pedro Pierluisi. The mayor of San Juan is Jorge Santini. We have surnames like: Olivieri, Vicenti, Rafaelli, Mattei, Antonini, Francheschi, Negroni and more.
