  • Good video. Now if I can just determine if mine is bad or not???

  • Hey far out thanks for posting. Appears to be the procedure I need to know for my '91 GMC 1500. Now need to decide if my impaired left hand will allow me to get the job done.

  • has any one done this on a 97 sonma need help!!

  • I have a 1995 Silverado Z71 (K1500)...and it has the same heater core setup....Yep. Autozone and the Repair manual even says to take out the dash LOL....Thats crazy LOL....Anyways, I removed all the bolts i could see but still felt like there was another one I had not removed ...but your correct...the heater core was right there.....Just waiting to be replaced :)...Mine turned out to be good :) How many bolts were there total in this?

  • @whitwellhigh Sorry I can't remember exactly how many bolts were on the cover, and I would check for you but I don't have the truck anymore. I do remember there being one bolt that was impossible to see and tricky to find roughly centered on the cover close to the firewall. Also, I think the cover kind of snaps in so I had to give it a bit of a yank once all the bolts were out.

  • just changed one out of my 1996 jeep grand cherokee. this is childs play compared to that task. 12 hours on that jeep, puuled the whole dash and everything to the firewall, damn!

  • @crownpoolnspa yeah I've seen some heater cores that are ridiculous to access, I found everything on my GMC was pretty easy to work on.

  • Thanks So Much For This Video, I was having troubles with all the bolts close to the firewall.

  • Dude! I owe you an enthusiastic thank you for your video!!! I had just come from a shop for my 1995 Silverado and was told my heater core was shot and the cost would be around $900!!!! I was going to just do a bypass and maybe sell the truck. but I found your video and thought....I could do that! I am totally not a mechanic....my son and I got a heater core at AutoZone for $36 and went to work....a mere 1 1/2 hrs later - DONE!!! Out $36 vs $900!!! Thanks again!

  • Very helpful thanks bro i thought i was going to have to pull the whole dash out wheww!!!! thank you

  • This pretty much the same for 95 Sonoma?

  • Great video. Didnt know about the clip that holds the heater core in place. Mine was laying in the box so the air was blowing past the heater core and was just luke warm. My brother fabricate a clip out of doubled up sheet metal and made a bew clip. Heat blows hot again.

  • Does this apply to the ol skool Suburbans from the 80's because my need to be replace in my 89?

  • Great video would this be similar on a 1999 Tahoe? I started leaking a small amount of coolant into the passenger floor area.

  • Did you have a dripping out of the cab to the road when you parked? My truck is loosing coolant by the driver door's front fender and I'm sure it's the Heater Core. No heat what so ever.

  • Real good vid ! I'm having problems with regular water in the blower. This happens when it rains. Then i have to put the fan on hi .To blow out the water so it does'nt rust the blower. Do u know what causes this to happen ?

  • @starvengers67 This usually means the drain hole/tube in the bottom of the unit is plugged. The drain allows condensation to go out on the ground ie: when a/c unit freezes then thaws. If the drain gets plugged it will accumulate in the blower housing.

  • good vid but make sure u check the box for the longer bracket old bracket is short and will rub a hole in heater core tank

  • is this pretty much the same for a 2002 s10...ive seen some complicated ass videos, ur video was simple.

  • @xSFU420x I'm not sure I've never done one on an S10, this video was on a 1500 so could be completely different.

  • Good job man I just have that problem in my 2000 S10 but i got some tips Thank you

  • dose anyone know wouled this be the same for a gmc 1994 sonoma or dose anyone know a video for a sonoma or something close

  • Thanks for this vid. My core just started leaking on my way to church today. Your video helped me out!

  • hi i do smell a little antifreez while driving and do have fog on my windshield mostly at night and my engine is a little hotter then it use to be its malabu 2001 so i called the repair shop and he gave me an estament of 700.00 to fix it and he did ask if windshield was fogging up , im not losing a lot of anti freez and i dont see a leak under the hood so i will check the heater core thanks for the tip...

  • Just got a 97 C1500 whose heater didn't work. Temp gauge didnt move from its lowest position. Checked sender/instrument and they're fine. Thermostat turned out to be missing, so I installed one (mileage and driveability improved too), but heater still won't. Bought the Haynes and it does say to remove half the interior to get it out, so I thought heck with it, Thanks to your video I wont freeze the rest of the winter!!!

  • @DucsUnlimited Your Welcome I am glad to have helped. When I checked into it some shops wanted over $1000!! I figured I should share the easy way so hopefully less people will get ripped off.

  • @brettlinton at 1:07 it shows the blower fan and housing...its the half round shaped black piece hanging below the dash...

  • @vettelover2009 Oh you are right, thanks for the correction, I guess I never saw the fan just the housing.

  • Where's the blower and the housing around the heater core? I think you are making it look one helluva lot easier than it really is.........

  • @pensandcalls nope it was dead easy on my 97 k1500 took about an hour and a half and it was my first time doing a heater core. Could be harder on different vehicles though I have heard horror stories of removing the entire dash to get at the heater core

  • @brettlinton That's interesting! My shop manual, among other things, tells you to drop the steering column, unbolt and pull the dash forward, unhook the motor from the fan, etc, etc. Did you even see the fan and its housing???? I guess I just have to get my lazy butt in there and do it.

  • @pensandcalls no I never saw the fan or its housing just the ducting in and out of the box around the heater core. Thats weird that your manual says to do all that work, I don't have a manual I just noticed that there was screws holding in the cover so I took it off to take a look at the heater core and once I had it off I could see that it would be pretty easy to replace it. The hardest part was getting the cover off (some of the screws are impossible to see)

  • Do you need to drain the fluid from the radiator first? I have a heater that doesn't heat very well, and I'm assuming it's probably the thermostat, heater core, or fan clutch. I want to check to see if the heater core is clogged, but if you need to drain the radiator first I might as well go ahead and change the thermostat because they're so cheap.

  • @thespanishlessons69 You don't have to drain the coolant first, but when you pull the hoses off of the heater core, coolant will spill out of them until you prop them up, then more will spill out when you re attach them. I ended up loosing about 4 liters when I did mine. I would think if the fan clutch was seized or the thermostat was stuck, your temp gage would not come up to operating temp, or it would take much longer than usual. You can check the fan clutch by hand pretty easily.
