I love the Groucho interviews with Dick Cavett.....interesting to see the infamous Erin Fleming here....I hope all the stories about her abusing Groucho weren't true, because he was old and so frail then....thanks for posting
Groucho was appearing regularly on the Cavett Show BEFORE he met Ms. Fleming. She had nothing to do with his Cavett appearances. I believe this appearance was Groucho's final Cavett show, and she had just arrived on the scene at the time. Groucho had a stroke some months after this TV appearance and should have retired after that, because the stroke took a lot out of him and really cut him down. But Fleming pushed him out there when he could hardly speak just to advance her own career.
@Lampshade51 No, that's not true. Fleming had been with him for some time before the Cavett Show. Erin did a great deal for Groucho, including changing his diapers towards the end. Groucho's son Arthur treated Erin so shabbily, she had been with him for quite awhile, catering to his every need, and Arthur took her to court to make sure she didn't end up with ANYTHING! Ms. Fleming ended up commitiing suicide. Read the book-"Hello, I must Be Going" by Charlotte Chandler to get the true story.
@HeavensHelp1 Erin didn't come on the scene until 1970-71. Cavett had Groucho on since the late 1960s. The Chandler book is limited because she was asked to leave before the end. Better books are "Raised Eyebrows" from Steve Stoliar or "Groucho" by Hector Arce. Both were there at the end when Erin went from crazy to psycho. She was a well-known whack job around LA when she met Groucho. Many stories. If she really loved him, she wouldn't have made him perform later when he was sick.
@HeavensHelp1 -I'm sorry, I forgot to mention, Ms. Chandler was VERY DETAILED in her book. Named dates, and HUNDREDS of celebrities that worked with Groucho. Did you know that Groucho didn't care for Bill Cosby? I was rather shocked by that one. She was with Groucho for almost a year.
@HeavensHelp1 -- Ms. Chandler was reportedly asked to leave by Erin a couple of years before Groucho's death. Erin's reason was that, at the time, Chandler did not have a signed book deal, as was supposedly originally claimed by Chandler when Erin allowed her access to the house. So Chandler's book is missing the increasingly bizarre final years. I have mixed feelings about Erin. She probably helped Groucho live longer, but she was also violent and mentally unstable.
@Lampshade51 You bring up some very good points. I may try and find the books you are referring to. In regard to Ms. Chandler, you stated that she was asked to leave, can you tell me why that was?
@EvenEvenOdd Wrong. Cavett was a friend of Groucho's and knew he always needed a "straight man" (serious partner) for his jokes. His straight men included brother Zeppo, Margaret Dumont and YBYL's George Fenneman.
If Groucho is talking about Debbie's boobs, it's an odd story. Nobody ever accused her of any kind of augmentation. She wasn't busty like her arch-rival Elizabeth Taylor, neither was she flat either, but just normal, so it's all in Groucho's mind. The husband Groucho is talking about is Harry Karl, and Debbie was very ill having tried and failed to have Karl's baby. Reynolds latched on to Karl thinking he had $200mill but boy did she have a surprise coming.
I don't think augmentation refers to a wig. For example, there's breast augmentation. There seems to be something more risque than a wig at play here. In any event, it was very entertaining.
I actually agree. I think Jonathan Winters was much funnier than Robin Williams, in turn who was much funnier than Patton Oswalt, but all greats. I've only seen Winters on YouTube, but you try telling my ten-year-old self than Jim Carrey wasn't the funniest man ever in history. And that's all that matters, the fleeting opinion of those who are young and alive.
without that woman Erin....we wouldnt have seen Groucho in the last few years.... though in this time how old and frail he was looking is sad ..bu groucho always loved being groucho...so id say he didnt need that much of a push
There was a cartoon in HUSTLER magazine shortly after Groucho's death, which showed him in heaven, saying "SURE,she {Erin} beat the hell out of me! I was 86; I took what I could get !"...
@orvgg i couldn't agree more. she would beat him and yell at him and she even said he had a stroke on her birthday just to ruin her birthday god i hate her. But u r right, if it weren't for her he wouldn't have appeared much
at 2:00 he says "they're all alike to me........upside down"!

Dick Cavett had no personality. Just like David Letterman.
