Also, all M42 owners should check their lower oil pan periodically for loose bolts that have fallen out of the upper oil pan ESPECIALLY after you buy a car from another owner. The lower isn't such a PIA like the upper, only a 30-minute job for even an amateur mechanic. Make sure you replace the gasket every time you take the pan off.
i have the same noise but when i turn on the cars its there but its not ass loud and the faster i go the more lousder it gets its so anoying how doi get rid of it HELP PLZ ID APRECIATE IT i have bmw 325is 92 i recently changed all sparrtplugs
These engines require 15w-40 oil. Same motor oil as the put in diesel engines.
The problem ig you have the clicking noise is going to be 1 of a few things.
Replace the timing chain tensioner 1st. This isnt that hard to do.
You may need a new timing chain and rails, if this has never been replaced.
When it does get replaced, make sure the mechanic removes the oil pan and cleans the oil pan. particles will get dropped down there when the timing chain rails get chipped up by the chain.

Yes we did. When we removed the oil pan to replace the oil pump, there was shrapnel from the old timing chain guide. (previous owner had that replaced)
They were large pieces too. They was getting sucked up to the sump pump screen and restricting the flow of oil to the top of the engine. Purred like a kitten after the new oil pump and removing that crap from the oil pan.
