Hollywood is only interested in making money. That's the truth, so why do people act surprised that they blacklisted Barbara Payton when her life became engulfed by scandal? Even today you have sacred cows like Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen being dropped because the notoriety of their personal lives overshadows the marketability of their image. That's just the way Hollywood has always been.
@Applebaum That was NOT the main reason they blackballed her. It was her numerous affairs, lack of discretion and publicity-seeking ways that did her in.
Her life is a cautionary tale for all those smalltown girls who arrive in Hollywood every day, fodder to be chewed up and spat out. The "casting couch" system is still in full effect there to this day. Barbara was stunningly lovely, yet her life ended up a textbook trainwreck. A quality biopic would be fascinating, and would serve as a warning to all those starstruck girls with more good looks than good sense...
@vonsmitty1313 Textbook? Not by a long shot. She was a huge star and made it big and almost had a very bright future. It was totally up to her. Her own vices were her undoing. She was not really a victim of Hollywood, as much as addiction. She was a great person, very kind and beautiful. But she loved her alcohol and sex. Her last years were MUCH darker than anything 'textbook.' It is still intensely sad, but not textbook. Her story could have happened most anywhere.
photogenic, but lightweight actress, of mediocre; and unproven, ability, her talent was mainly in the bedroom- and not on the silver screen. after several attempts to reconstruct and reshape her sagging career, she challenged jack warner; and lost. subsiquently; she couldn't find work in hollywood. Her men included cagney, cooper, cochrane, francot tone, and tom neal. she lost her battles to alcoholism and heroin addiction, and ended up doing tricks on hollywood blvd.
one of the last pics taken of her shows how alcohol destroyed her looks---there needed to be Betty Ford clinics back then for her and Gail Russell(another beauty that let alcohol destroy her life)
I think it shows the power of drugs and alcohol, how easy it is for someone so attractive to attract the wrong things, and how easy it is to end up like she did. Somehow, Lana, Ava and a bevy of other hard-drinking beauties ended up as icons.
I couldn't have said it better than John did! Thanks again, Lisa, for this wonderful tribute to a beautiful, talented, loving, person who has been so unfairly judged by so many for far too long. xoxo
What an absolutely beautiful gesture from you, Lisa. It has touched me more deeply than you could ever imagine. I know that Barbara's soul is now on a journey of peace and joy and that the chains of her unhappiness here on earth have long been shed. Somehow, though, I think she is filled with even more peace and joy today...thanks to this beautiful and loving tribute from you.
A beautiful tribute to a talented, complex, and extremely under-appreciated actress and human being. Her story is absolutely harrowing and difficult to believe. She left her mark, and she is rightfully remembered now for her remarkable achievements and unrealized potential. The book is amazing. When will they make a movie about this incredible woman? It has Oscar potential for the actress lucky enough to portray her. Angelina Jolie would be brilliant.
Lovely. I could see Angelina Jolie or Drew Barrymore playing her.

Well, it sounds like you would know about tricks, drug use, and alcoholism first-hand...

I hope she is in a better place and not suffering like she was when she was alive.
