Furthermore, it does not do well to label anyone as ignorant on the basis of their dislike of this album. I assume you were referring to those who dislike the unpolished nature of the music, and i agree that is an important feature of Wait's music that may be misunderstood. But many Waits fans will still dislike the album becasue of the vocals. Johansson is not a good singer (at least in the range she insist on using predominately - her voice does not work that low in the range)

i love Tom Waits, and i think its fantastic that Scarlett Johansson likes him enough to do this album of covers.

However, you disprove you're own point: - if you have to know Tom Waits to like the album it has failed - because then its only merit is the reflected brilliance of Waits. As if to acknowledge this you spend the whole five minutes explaining why Waits is brilliant - this does not mean Johansson's album is, simply by proxy.

i think the problem is not her vocal or the arrangements, i think they are awesome, they just clash ever so slightly when put together. the music never reaches the slumbering calmness it tries to reach. i think her voice is very cool. and the arrangements rock, i SO get where she was going with the album. i loved it. it makes me feel good when i hear it. i really hope i hear much more like this just better, :D

The only song I really like is falling down, which I think her version is genius. I think, overall, her album was weird and uncomfortable. But I also thinks it's cool that she did that instead of some bubble gum pop bullshit. So I respect her for taking the risk. If you're going to share music with the world, even cover tunes, it should come from the heart. If your heart is full of weird, uncomfortable shit, then that's what you should send out to the masses. I think Tom would be proud.

I love her voice, because it is so different from the usual manufactured bimbo pop. It has personality and presence. Love it or hate it you certainly notice it! Marianne Faithfull, Amanda Lear, Nico all have distinctive odd ball voices. love them for what they are.

It also takes a lot of guts to put out your first album the way you want it to be, I bet she had to fight the producers to do it.

I love this album... it's been a while since I hadn't heard such poetic music, it really inspires me. It takes a great amount of courage to put something so unique out there and I respect her as an artist for it.

Tom Waits is a legend, but it pisses me off to no end when people say stuff like "no-one should ever cover him", so stupid. No music is sacred

These are new interpretations of the songs, if you don't like them then thats fine, don't listen, I do and thats fine too. But don't hate them just because.

Her voice is good, I think people are just put off since it is so unlike most pretty actressess voices. It's unusual, but that doesn't mean bad, and it's put to great affect on the album.

Swearing and calling people " fucking ignorant" just because they might have a different opinion than you isn't really where it's at. That being said, I have heard the album, it was ok - some of it was pretty haunting. I don't think she deserved all of that bad press. She never professed to being this great singer. I kind of liked her after she did this. She did it because she wanted to - that's cool. I don't think she cares about what people think. More power to her. Peace!!!

this albums is sooo beautiful! i really love it... i hadn't heard of tom waits until i got this album but i think hes a genius... but i love this album so much... its so eerie! but i love it! shes such a talented actress and a amazing singer as well.. its her album i felt that she loved the album... i h8 all the music everyone likes lol its bland but this album has so much substance :)

my fave songs have to be..green grass, fallin down and town with no cheer!

I never heard of Tom Waits before this album and I still like it! At first when I heard it I was like WTF! But then I listened more and got to like a lot of the songs. Her voice isn't perfect but it's different, and the music more than makes up for it! Go Steik! Funnily enough Song For Jo is one of my faves! I love the moody tone! I also love Fannin Street! I mainly listen to it for Bowie's voice though LOL!Oh, good review btw! P.S. ScarJo beats Lazy Lohan anyday!

She has good taste if she covers him of all people, but she molested the songs and made them all sound like a boring version of Freezepop. Maybe I'd respect the album a bit more if every tune didn't sound so similar. Besides, if one's debut is almost all covers, that's not very creative of them.
