@Graham6762 I liked and agree with your comment; there are books , websites , etc that prove scientifcally biofuels are not all that is cracked to be. Here is another factor; Moderate use of beer / liquor spirts drinks would free up quite a few acres for producing more food for the world and so would a reduction in bee consumption. I could be wrong but what do you think ?
who even thought about using corn for ethanol? why not growing sugar cane? supposedly it gives more ethanol. they were doing this in brazil for over 20 years. apparently the only issue is deforestation, not food. and algaes can make 10 to 30 times more oil on the same area compared with oil palms. why do I know these things? why is obama talking about "corn, ethanol"? it seems like that no one really knows how to run the world. and we are all getting doomed cause of stupidity.
"In searching for the new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill...The real enemy, then, is humanity itself." -- Club of Rome members Alexander King and Bertrand Schneider in their book "The First Global Revolution"
Farmers planted over 90 million acres to corn this yr. Maybe 12 million acres used for ethanol production. Some 15 to 20 million more acres planted to Corn more than in prior years.
That is why corn only went up 31 % against 70% , 80% , even 130% increases in other grain prices.
In short, stocks and prices are influenced by the insane war on some terrorists costing a trillion off budget dollars to date, jump starting inflation Big Time!
Add the fact that the 40 million acres in the US that are out of production, GOV. is paying farmers not to farm.
If planted to fodder beets, that land could net 44 billion gallons of Ethanol and as much distillation residues to equal what every feedlot needs that used to come from corn.
There are no shortages, just people invading commodities and bailing on the ever worth-less dollar due to an off budget insane war.
Absolutely right. Using corn only proves the ultimate stupidity and/or bribery of the United states government. they can use sugar beets for ethanol. Why corn??? Just about anything with a high sugar, starch content will do. We're not going to DRINK it ya moron$.
The present government with it's generally accepted stupidity and apathy is absolutely pathetic and a troubling embarrassment. Leaders?? Give me a break.
American farmers and those of Europe and Asia can easily feed the world. Google "Mister, Can You Spare a Paradigm?"
America alone can easily lift 3 billion people out of protein deficiency by planting corn and fodder beets to less than half their 354 million acres of prime cropland, making ethanol and using distillation residues as feed for Tilapia or mushrooms.
No one need starve. It's the politicians who subsidize Big Oil some $5.65 against Ethanol's 61 cents.
the us gov has a 100% trade teriff on brazilain sugarcain to fatten the wallets of corn growers, sugarcain makes its cheaper better and faster than corn ehthonol.
Well shit! As long as I can grab a #2, supersized, from McDonalds, on my way out of Wal-Mart after I spent my stimulus check on cheezy Chinese made goods, I wont care about the rest of the world. Long live Wal-Mart and lame ass American ideals!
LOL, sadly you are right. That is the take that the majority of American have on any situation. The media has dumbed us all down so much that they just don't care what happens.
We are actually closer to 4% of our fuel from ethanol. were we to farm the 40 million acres in the land bank we could generate 44 billion gallons of ethanol from fodder beets which makes for nearly one third of our fuel needed.
the government and world banks zare creating this problem. there are technologies already created that can use other material to create fuels. thermal depolymerization is a process that breaks down any carbon based material down to oil. it is very efficient, and is more thermodynamically conservative than using food for fuel. plastic bottles, rubber tires, paper products, and even meat production waste can be converted into oil. with the amount of trash we produce it would kill3 birds w/ 1 stone

Farmers can get more money from Ethanol so they will sell to refiners. Maybe we should have drilled ANWAR and of our coast (Florida, Cal) unintended consequences are a bitch!
The root cause of this problem is the dominant mode of production and distribution, that of capitalism. It doesn't have human lives at heart but rather profiteering at the expense of lives. It is simply not a sustainable economic system and we're seeing the beginning of the end of it.
The long droughts that destroyed Australia's grain production (1 of only 2 southern hemisphere grain farming countries) might have had something to do with it too. Also, it's interesting that it took a law from congress to make capitalism go retarded and start growing grain for fuel instead of food. Should the Mexicans, soon to have a massive corn (Mex. staple) shortage in the next year or so, thank capitalism or congress for making us put corn in our fuel tanks rather than their markets?
If the demand for food is greater than the supply, some people will need to be priced out of the market. The UN has been to busy criticizing Israel to tackle the single greatest problem in the world, overpopulation. Eventually, billions of people will starve and the UN will collapse.
The population hasn't had much of a problem sustaining itself in the past. It's the coupling of a bad season with government policies in the US and EU to start using grain for fuel instead of food that is amounting to a diminished supply this time. Enough food might even be grown, but 5%-10% is going to be mixed into gasoline (incentivesed by taxes) instead of bread.
Oil prices rose from $25 a barrel in Sept. 2003 to $116.10 a barrel on April 18, 2008. Thanks to the IMF, World Bank & WTO's 'free trade in agriculture'.. there's an unjust corporate controlled industrial food system, making food sovereignty impossible and removing developing countries' ability to stockpile grain. Subsidizing support only goes to bigger-scale farmers.. NOT to smaller-scale farmers.. as a result there's NO protection from price shocks.
Be careful with the numbers you use for oil. If you price it in US dollars you have to make sure to account for inflation. The more dollars that Congress puts into Iraq, the less valuable the dollars become, like comic books or baseball cards - more rare = more value. Compare $ of oil to $ of something with a static quantity. When compared to gold, the value of oil hasn't changed much, yet Congress/Fed are making it unaffordable for many.
A gallon of ethanol < a gallon of gasoline. So it takes more energy to produce a gallon of ethanol than what can be rendered from it. Also simply creating more growing fields for corn, wheat, etc. reduces wild land which is a bad idea. For example many medicines are made from plants found only in rainforests.
I also think overpopulation is a big factor here. The human population is exponentially growing, that's a danger to the planet.
Look at the other feed stocks for bio fuels. Corn is one of the most unproductive feed stocks. Example, Biodiesel from algae can make 1800 Gallons per Acre of fuel or more. Ethanol from corn only makes about 320 GPA. Ethanol from Sugar cane 570--700 GPA. Switch-grass 330--810 GPA.
There is far more bio-fuel potential in the non-edinle portion of the corn plant [most of the bio-mass]. The government [taxpayers] subsidy should be directed to bio-fuel schemes that only utilise the waste bio-mass, and certainly not used to create a false economic justification to squander the vital food portion of harvests.
