scientifically speaking temperature and co2 levels are correlated effects...carbon dioxide transmits visible light but absorbs infrared or heat... the more c02 in the atmosphere the more heat is absorbed from the sun....an increase in sun temperature doesn't increase c02 levels...deforestation increases them because trees use co2 for photosynthesis, burning fossil fuels releases natural sinks of c02 that the earth has stored in order to maintain an ideal temperature...

Carbon tax is more about getting us off oil (economics) and coal(dirty air)..then about warming.

Think about it: if they proposed a fossil energy tax..they would never get it passed. So even knowing that the US alone can not cut enough carbon to make a temp difference,they still want (rightfully so) to get off foreign oil and shut dirty coal plants. This is both economic &

Permafrost does seem to be softening though, at least in some parts, however equal parts have been freezing in other regions. I think what we're dealing with is more related to a climate shift, rather than a climate change. You should note that some polar bear populations are dwindling while others are flourishing.

NOBODY publishes anything in any international scientific journal without solid evidence. The peer-revision process is rigorous and pervasive, many complain about the difficulty of publishing their findings, count your naysayer friends in, who cannot publish and keep crying fool to everyone who would listen. Nobody in the scientific community will. Did I mention there is a consensus? It is kinda like the EVOLUTION debate. It is over.

That's not quite true, the ICPP gave about 90% certainty that human activity was significant in climate change.

The disturbing reasoning here is not the idea that some people disagree with the human contribution, but that when there is an extremely good chance that we ARE significantly contributing to an increase in the rate of climate change some people refuse to act on the off-chance that some talking head on television is right and people actually involved in the research are "freaks".

the only qualification for the 31,478 'expert scientists' who signed the petition is that they have a bachelor's degree, but not neccessarily a degree in anything related to earth sciences, and not necessarily scientific employment either, all of which begs the question: experts at what?

When I was a girl (a generation or so ago) they were warning us that we were heading into a new Ice Age. There are several books that track global temperatures over the last four or five HUNDRED years that show that the temperature isn't fluctuating any worse now than it has before. And has anybody factored in Krakatoa effect from 9/11?

The worry in the 70's (or so) was that we were getting less solar intensity on the earth's surface. This was probably due to particulate pollution. As we have been fixing the problem of particulate pollution, we've realized that the effect that it had was masking the effects of increased greenhouse gas production and deforestation - which have become more apparent.

Not sure about the Krakatoa effect, but some scientists did study the effects of no-fly zones (lack of jet trails) on temp.
