Hey I have a question I am still a BEGINNER at fish tanks and I love the African cilchlid but I'm scared that I'm going to screw it up if I start a tank with them I have a 55 gallon ready to go but I don't know id it will be to hard for a beginner to do an African Cilchlid tank do you think that I should just do regular freash water or do you think a beginner could maintain one of these tanks and I live in new York so I have no problems getting supplies
I would probably add some more rocks. If your lombardoi and Melanochromis is getting larger you will need more rocks in there. The Melanochromis at 3:00 min is getting beautiful. Good work.
only veggie flakes and pellets as a staple. you should not feed Mbuna high protein foods. spirulina is a good starter. i also mix it up with broccoli and the occasional algae wafer.
I have had a large planted tank with many of the mbuna species shown in this video with plants including java fern, anubias and amazon swords with great success and very little nibbling at the plants at all. The tank has been set up for 3 years now and most of the 11 species of fish I have are now full grown. My plants have all taken root in the sand subtrate I chose. Cichlids and plants can have some issues but for the most part it is totally workable and gradually becoming old information
They never have and Mbuna are known to leave java species and anubias alone as most of the time they're grown on rock and wood, not in the substrate where African cichlids dig. But thanks for your comment.
I tried the plant thing and the africans would sit there and bite and tug and shake while ripping up my plants it was a total disaster, but mine are bigger, I seen your fish there are a few that will get a lot bigger and could and will be tyrants lol, I wasted 150 on my planted tank. Cichlids have different personalities don't believe everything your read cause some fish that are suppose to be agressive turn out to be the nicest fish in the tank...
totally agree about the personalities... my auratus is as sweet as they come. so far so good on the plants. i've heard from numerous sources that these species are distasteful to the Mbuna.
How long did those plants last? Not long i bet!!
