@octaviom85 haha hahahahhah! I dunno though, seriously I am buying one and I was roading in it with a jeep down some scary shit. No- It cannot rip through broken arrow and I wanted a jeep. but seeing as I am a former integra owner it's perfect. It IS an integra inside save for the transfer case transmission. I can work on that at least. These jeeps around here for sale are ragged out and this little guy hung with one DEEP in the woods, off the trails even. and I won on gas mileage.
@LeonRFpoa I own both, I bought a CRV and love it for driving in the winter ON roads, but it is no match for my Jeep TJ. The Jeep would school my CRV on everything but pavement. My TJ gets 20 Miles/Gallon. That is if you keep your foot out of it. The 4.0 Liter engine will drink alot of gas if you let it. My CRV looks to be the same year of the one in the video too. But with a 57 mile commute everyday and winter driving the CRV is the way to go for me.
Anyone that can handle a crv in thick mud at low speeds, would have a blast in a land rover or anything else with all terrain tires and low range. Great video and thanks for posting it
wow there's no sense in comparing a 4 cylinder with a 6 cylinder and in the small SUV market i wud say the jeep rubicon or even the tj would be best at off road considering the fact the army chose to use it...
The Wrangler (the Rubicon is the top of the line version) has absolutely no relation to the original Jeep CJs used in the military except for looks, and even then it's a bit far off.
Wrangler is still one of the few vehicles with a folding winshield and easily removable doors, but in many other ways you are correct. However that is due mostly because of federal laws requiring vehicles to pass tests that the original CJ would never pass, air bags and seat belts for starters.
Not only that, but the average consumer would not want to be driving around a vehicle that in its last form would now be a fifty year old design. It would be absolutely no competition for anything modern. That being said, the reason it's so different is the same reason all cars are so different than they were fifty years ago—because of technology.
Lol, I'd love for the laws to be changed so the consumer could make that choice. I would be curious to see the mix of desire and technology. You see bits and pieces of that in vehicles like the Ariel Atom and the off-road Scorpion, but not much like that from the large OEMs. Alot of people don't even know air bags were invented in the 1960s, but they saw little use because not enought people wanted them, they had to be forced on people. Just like seat belts. people are forced to wear them.
That's just it, the average consumer wants something new and up to date. For those of us who don't, we've got the old ones. But yeah, those are oddball cars that meet the consumer's desires but not the government's (when usually it meets both or neither). It's a combination of both, but especially the government when it comes to safety and emissions.
Well, its a good thing the gov't is there to mandate what the consumer actually wants, or how else would the consumer know what they want. lol. I think the best example was when the gov't banned large cars, then everybody started buying trucks and SUVs. And now they are try to force hybrids, which almost nobody is buying.
I'm telling you, it's a combination of both. It's the consumer that's wanting hybrids, as well as the government. If you look at E85, though, that's pretty much explicitly the government's work right there. Consumers want new stuff, which is why we get newer and better cars, and the government tells them how clean and safe they must be. The government didn't ban large cars, they just died out from high fuel prices in the 70s. Hybrids are pushed by both, IMO.
Yes, that's the consumer desire and that's what they've been getting. The government is setting higher CAFE standards that the manufacturers must meet, so that's where they play a role.
I don't think people understand this is a on road vehicle. Dur. You dont take a slip differential system off road. I can get over all the dirtroads in Vermont in my V. I have never had a problem in ice or snow. People just don't realize that people use these for ON ROAD. If you want off road then you need a Jeep or maybe if you really want off road a International. Those are for offroad. Not CRV's. I dare you to find a more reliable, affordable, and economic SUV then a CRV.
Well people can take small SUVs off road if they want, maybe its more fun that tehy arent great it it, its more of a risk factor. I take my 07 escape off road and it handles great and its a lot of fun
Yap ! CRV's 4WD sucks compared to RAV4's 4WD system! I don't see the rear wheels engaging as well!! wtf ! You might have damaged the rear differential. If you overheat it , 4WD system will not work! You have to let it cool down for at least 4 hours!!! Toyota is better when it comes to 4WD--4RUNNERS,LANdCRUISERS etc...Honda --what 4WD ?
who uses a crv offroad but it is fantastic on the highway and city driving where 99.9999 percent of people use it. and this is the 2002 model. 2002 rav 4 sucks.
You're probably right but neither of them have a low range centre diff. lock. A Suzuki Grand Vitara (Escudo) does and therefore can beat both of them.
Overall the Australian Ford Territory is better because it has Hill Decent control and also a six speed automatic, I've heard the Escape only have four which is not bad but not good either.
Wouldn't you be better with the Explorer since it as a low ratio? :D But then the departure and approach angles are disappointing :(
Yes I agree...Id only it had a low range gear. But the 09 escapes wioll have a 6 speed tranny. Im talking about the small SUV market, the escape is teh best off road.
I'm glad the Ford (US) is starting to wake up after hearing successes from Ford in Europe and Australia. If Ford (US) learnt from its European and Aussie division earlier, it'd have a better chance being profitable.
Since Escapes inherited some of Explorer's, Expedition's and Excursion's 4WD ability, your Escape is arguably better than others except (probably) Grand Vitara. CRV is the worst cause it doesn't have lock feature. Yours does!
I'm more into Mitsi. Pajero (Montero) over the Suzuki.
actually the new escapes (05+) do not have a locking feature. They have a smart 4wd system and it works great. It checks for wheel slips in the front wheels 200 times per second. It makes off roading a breeze.
There was a European magazine that did a test between the RAV4 and the CR-V around '99 or 2000. The CR-Vs RT-4WD system was PROVEN to react faster and work better than Toyotas system. I don't know where you got your information from.
Also, I have done donuts in the snow for 10 minutes straight and mine NEVER overheated. It does not take four hours to cool down, it is more like 15 minutes and that system would have to be used constantly for a half hour or so...
This was Honda response to the early Freelanders... and it sucked, even with a 2000cc petrol engine, there was just not enough ground clearance, and I don't even see the rear wheels spinning. It's plain trash.
@therieri the first gen CRV had 12inches of ground clearence, how is that not enough!?! and this is the FWD model. there is not sticker on the back of the wiindow to indicate 4WD
CR-V не внедорожник! Куда вы на ней едите)) Это вседорожник, очень отличный. It not off-road car.

Mitsi Pajero (Montero) Dakar rally champion in 1985, 92, 93, 97, 98, 2001, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 and will be in 2008. Triton is also awesome.
Hey Nissan Patrol, Pathfinder and Navara are also Dakar machines and deserve to be respected!
Suzuki Grand Vitara (or Escudo) is a proper 4X4 and I also respect it as well.
Even Xtrail, Rav4 and Outlander can pee on CRV's 4wd sys. The trios are not 4 pretenders.
