Madeline was one of the greatest & Mel Brooks was SO smart to cast her in several of his films. She is greatly missed along with Lucille Ball, Gilda Radner & other funny ladies.
@laurenksmith23 Madeline Kahn really made it work, didn't she? This scene and her "The servant waits..." line from a little earlier in the film prove just how funny she was.
The best part bout this is that Madelin was actually a prude from interviews that Mel Brooks has given. You wouldn't know it from the roles she had in his movies! <3 her forever!
I love how she says "very nice selection" and how do you forget a midnight orgy?? Oh and one last thing, i feel so bad for those guys who were "NO" was directed too. hahah=p
Well, if Madeline Kahn's fictional Empress Nympho was anything like real life Roman Empress Messalina, who had a reputation for promiscuity including all-night sex competitions with prostitutes, then a single midnight orgy is a simple detail to overlook ;) And for some reason, I don't think you really feel all that bad for the "no" guys LOL
I posted before that I remember reading that the melody Madeline used for this scene was from "The Barber of Seville," but the tempo was much slower. It sounds like that may be the case but I don't know for certain.
I solved it. It's the "Dance of the Hours" from the opera La Gioconda, composed by Amilcare Ponchielli. Ironically, the piece has two very recognizable parts...it ends with the tune in this clip, but it begins with "Hello Mutha, Hello Fatha!"
The film "History of the World: Part I" was released in theaters in the United States on June 12th, 1981. It was the seventh film directed by Mel Brooks.
great movie..i remember seein this when i was in like 2nd grade...me and my cousin's would be sneakin it past the older folks since it wasnt allowed. this movie's the best
I love Madaline Kahn in this movie. shes awesome. i've watched this movie since i was a kid and its great that as I get older more of the jokes start making more sense to me. A great movie that just gets better and better.

Isn't the line "I love quick time march?"

@MozartGirl1756 You'd think it would be, but it sure does sound like there's an "h" in there :)

@griekgek I think it's "The Barber of Seville" just sung with a really slow tempo. I may be wrong, however.

You should have recorded a little it more of the scene until the point where Competance congratulates Nympho for making some awfully "big decisions."

@Lunarscope I'm sure Nympho is a take off of Messalina. The whole "eunuch with an erection" is a gag from one of the movies about her.
