@harvinsky : The complete production is not available in dvd. This particular scene/clip was from her portrait, titled "Dame Kiri Te Kanawa". It's the ROH/Covent Garden production. I think the one that is available on DVD is 1996 Metropolitan production.
You're unaware of the significance of Arabella's second act declaration to Mandryka, which virtually quotes Ruth's declaration to Naomi in the Old Testament, a message of tolerance and acceptance in which Ruth, a Moabite, embraces Naomi's people and God, conveying the belief in an inclusive God who embraces all peoples, even in the ancient world of the Israelites - a very good message for Hitler to have learned.
@bronxbearbud Now you got me; I was indeed unaware of this certain point in the opera. But nevertheless I really can't comply with your rather polemic comment, which only once more picks up the relation between Wagner and the Third Reich. And besides: As far as I know, Hitler was also a fan of Lehar's The Merry Widow.
@SatanAteMySocks Well, you insulted my "terribly stupid" remark from a place of ignorance, and show no shame or contrition at having had that ignorance exposed and contradicted. While I could whip up a tempest worthy of Aithra in "Die Aegyptische Helen" over the way Goebbels arranged for Lehar's Jewish wife to be "Ehrenarierin", I'll instead borrow her line as the curtain falls on the first act: "Kannst du nicht schweigen?" (grin)
Ehrenarierin - "honorary Aryan by marriage". And while Hitler may have loved Lehar's music, he sure hated Lehar's "Das Land des Lächelns" librettist, the Jewish Fritz Löhner-Beda, who, despite Lehar's personal appeal to Hitler, was sent to his death -- along with HIS Jewish wife -- at Auschwitz.
This is so beautiful, Kiri and the opera. The simple action of bringing someone a glass of water takes a higher very romantic meaning as it becomes Arabella's symbol of her love for Mandryka. One of the most beautiful mments in opera.
@CONTESTAR Yes, a good question and many asked the same question when Lisa Della Casa held the fort (and fore). Even Renee Fleming says that Della Casa's "is the highest example of what is possible in ARABELLA". But Kiri IS so wonderful, i agree.
Very nice video of the great Kiri te Kanawa as Arabella, but the very fine baritone is not Wolfgang Brendel. He features on the Met video of Arabella with te Kanawa, but on this one, it is definitely not Brendel. Would love to know who it is.
Beautiful how her persona, stage presence and beauty washes over u and u feel like she is serenading you the same way she is to Mandryka!!! Love the clean attack and none of the Fleming scoops! Brava...her best scene yet!
@profgv As much as i love Kiri, i must agree with you here. I even believe her to be THE Countess, THE Elvira, and the list goes on. But a lot of youngsters on here have not perhaps even heard of her, altho' i cannot think why.
I think this is from the 1989 or 1990ROH production, because I own the Met 1995 one and this is different. She sings this better than anyone else, I agree!
Shes really the best one, the only soprano who has a whole stroy going through her body and across her face while delivering perfect music. The rest just stand there looking like idiots, making faces and calling it a performance. That guy with her was kinda eaten alive. Kiri is divine.
Gracias por este video !

completely overrated, compare with Della Casa, Popp or Janowitz

My God, what a singer; certainly the best I ever heard in Strauss and Mozart, and my favorite Arabella and Countess ever!

Oy, why couldn't Hitler have loved Richard Struass instead of Richard Wagner? What a different world this might have been...

hmmm..... he actually did. very much so. look it up on wiki.

@bronxbearbud What a terribly stupid comment. As if it's Wagner who made Hitler the psychopath he was. And besides: Ever heard Strauss' Elektra?

Who's the Mandryka? Nice looking guy and a fine voice. Dame Kiri is excellent in this scene and has nearly the ideal voice for this role.

Like Lisa Della Casa before her Te Kanawa ia the Arabella of all time. There are bigger voices but not greater interpretations.
