I first discovered Schmitt 40+ years ago with the Paray recording of "La Tragedie de Salome." Love this work too... espcially the great organ balance!
The Pacific Chorale performed this mighty work last evening to thunderous applause by an impressed audience. It is quite a workout for the orchestra and chorus
Pacific Chorale in Orange County, California will be performing Psaume XLVII on November 7, 2010. Thank you for making such a great recording of this neglected work available!
And I say thank you for promoting this gorgeous though lesser known work. I am sure that, considering the splendour of this musical monument, its lush orchestration and extremely refined harmonies, you will obtain a deserved standing ovation. Greetings from France !
@PacificChorale Some of us simply cannot travel to the west coast -- even to take in an elusive performance of the Psaume! (I've made it to DC and NYC for other performances.) Will your concert performance be offered as a CD or download? It sure sounds like it was a stunning one.
@Danzig987 Unfortunately there are no immediate plans to make the performance available. The additional costs for recording and broadcast rights are fairly prohibitive. We will be sure to announce it if anything changes!
Gee, I'm so pleased to have come across this guy !
Think he'd go down a storm at the Proms; I've been to 10 this season, mainly Russians & Mahler, and M. Schmitt would not be out of place in their company at all !
I only managed to hear a concert version of this masterpiece at Radio-france a few years ago. But was rather disappointed by the slow tempis taken by the conductor. This would be a great piece for the Proms... With Gardiner at the baguette... One can dream...
Was this the CD recording with Marek Janowski ... or a live ONF concert? I recall that Jeffrey Tate programmed the Psaume in Paris maybe five or six years ago ...?
I am quite sure that such a majestic and "excessive" work would receive a standing ovation.
However, in my opinion, Elgar's "Pump and Circumstances" or Holst's Planets are more suited for this kind of event. Schmitt's style and orchestration are quite complex for such a popular event.
You are perfectly right ! This is Martinon's recording with the ORTF. I cannot understand why this very exciting work is not played more often in France. I am convinced that Schmitt's political ideas during WWII might have impaired his composer's career after 1945 ...
I have already posted his Symphonie Concertante and intend to upload a few more works in the future.
Yes, it seems this work is most popular today in ... Japan! (Schmitt's music in general is played there very frequently, especially Salome and Dionysiaques.) Here in U.S. we get precious few opportunities to see the Psalm in performance -- most recently in Washington DC in 2000 and New York City in 1997 (American Symphony Orchestra/Leon Botstein). The Eugene Ormandy/Philadelphia Orchestra aircheck performance from about 1977 is a classic.
@Danzig987 I lost the concert. was the end of the world to me, REALLY! People said that was stunning... in other hand I saw nelson freire playing chopin concerto no.2 with the same orchestra, that was remarkable.... if you dont know him look at his interpretations of chopin, try finding in youtube OSESP too...
@gabrieloni Did this performance happen to be one conducted by Jan-Pascal Tortelier? If so, I think I read the Chandos will be recording this along with Schmitt's "Salome" with the Sao Paulo Orchestra. I wonder what the "filler" item might be? There's another choral work of Schmitt's called "Five Choruses in Twenty Minutes" that is pretty interesting ... I heard a concert recording of it dating back about 25 years with the NDR Symphony (Germany). It would fit perfectly on the Chandos CD.
This is the great Jean Martinon/ORTF recording from 1973 ... the best one ever commercially recorded. Great aircheck broadcasts of this monumental choral work have been made by Ormandy, Rosenthal, Markevitch, Tate, Botstein, Fournet and others, but this is THE commercial performance to have. Gaston Litaize is great on the organ, and Andrea Guiot does wonders with the soprano solo part in the middle section. Bravo!

It was Jeffrey Tate indeed, with soprano Inva Mula.

Do let us know how the concert went. You are so lucky to see it in performance -- perhaps the first time in Brasil??
