  • does anyone know the tuning used so i can do an inferior version

  • let us forget NOT that adorable lassie in the beginning and the end.

    greetings from holland

    elton.

  • I love Paul Brady's voice. He is my favorite Irish singer/songwriter, with Luka Bloom coming up next.

  • great as always.noticed some postings re the tuning.ITS OPEN G(some say open a) DGDGBD!guitar master john renbourn uses a minor variant tuning the B(second string)down a semitone for tunes like "the fiddler" on his "nine maidens" album.hope this helps.happy playing.

  • awesome song

  • Paul Brady: IRISH NATIONAL TREASURE

  • still the best, pity Andy Irvine was'nt with him,big up

  • I really wish my balcony to be next to this one!

  • There is an advert for Daniel O'Donnell's Album-Moon over Ireland - All I can say is I wouldn't If I were you !!

  • I've just discovered this man. A pleasure. Thank you for sharing this Stephan. :)

  • Paul Brady's music CV is like a history of innovation in Irish music over the last 40 years or more... and he is also an important interpreter of two Beatle songs- his versions of THERES A PLACE is magic and he also breathes new life into YOU WONT SEE ME on the Rubber Folk album.

  • @thepinhunter: True, true. However they did it, I'm just glad they did it.

  • Man! To play guitar like this guy! And to soulfully wed it to deep lyrics! Wow!

  • *having heart attack* and seizure.... from shock....of how absolutely gorgeous this was..... O_O

  • What is the thought process behind getting an amazing artist and then recording him on a noisy street? Why not break some of his stings as well? That's just dumb.

  • @braktheconqueror7 well they're not "recording" him, they're showcasing him.... its just a cool backdrop i think, i agree it takes away from the quality, but its cool nonetheless.

  • Paul Brady is a pure legend!

  • Aye. Tis genius.

  • what's the point in putting a great singer and player on a fuckin balcony over a noisy street- use some sense you idiots

  • @SuperBeanson ...because it is called BALCONY TV.Ever hear of an indoor balcony ? Sure PB knew what he was gettin into!

  • @martcarey haha. class

  • I never know howto read these comments... is it from the bottom up or the top down... Someone please enlighten me. Nice finger work paulie!!!

  • The man is a national treasure - how he can make that guitar sing and what a great song. Thanks Paul!

  • A blessing on our Island. Such a beautiful song, think its in DADGAD tuning. Can nearly figure it out, but no one will ever have his touch

  • @kiwiproject think its DADFSharp AD...dadfad !

  • Paul I first found you singing Paddys Green Shamrock Shore at 19 im 26 now and will b married soon

  • Whooze yer wan?

  • I wish I could play the guitar like that!

  • Who the f*** had the stupid idea of getting a living legend to play in the middle of a city centre rush hour. Jeez

  • @nondescript11 hardly rush hour

  • absolute irish ledgend!

  • class

  • I want to find a tavern with this on the jukebox

  • Paul just keeps getting better

  • Heaven. Genius!

  • Not sure why I'm drawn to the Irish (I think I are one)... but Paul Brady, Van, U2, even the more traditional Celtic music... it just resonates with me. Love it. A blessing watching Paul perform, grow and mature over the years. Great stuff!

  • @mrbibblebabble

    Same thing here.

When I was smaller - i knew all those singers or even the ones that were less well known. All of them had something special...and only several years ago I found out that all of them were or are irish :)) hehe

  • I love this guy. Especially when he does traditional stuff like Arthor. Mcbride.

  • Great that the new album will be out in March 2010. Not so great that he will be gigging all round Ireland in May - but NOT Belfast. Come on Paul, the Ulster Hall awaits another classic performance.

  • Met Paul Brady a few days ago in Matt Molloy's bar in Westort, he was a true gent and a good laugh too. He was singing and playing with other musicians for the Geantraí Christmas special on TG4. If you're in Ireland, make sure you tune in on Christmas day. I believe it's on at 9pm.

  • I saw Paul in concert in 1977 & he was brilliant. Sounds like he's gotten even better over the years.

  • fingerpickin brilliant!

  • Magic!

  • Ooh she's pretty. Good tune n'all :)

  • Balcony TV is a great concept its a tribute to Paul Brady that he took part and added great street cred to this project. Well done to pauline and all the gang keep up the great music.

  • haha in the beginning he's kind of looking around like "what the hell am i doing here". gotta love paul brady.

  • I hadn't heard or seen Paul for a very long time. This was great, and I cannot believe not rehearsed!.

His voice seems more suited to the traditional music now, than I remember.

  • Great playing... i guess he's playing a lowden guitar made in the avalon factory... uuummm seems cedar top and mahogany back and sides... i belive it's in open g key... excellent guitar and better payer

  • He makes that slack-key/cross Spanish guitar ring doesn't he? Great version of the song.

  • paul brady - simply the man - end of

  • Comment removed

  • god i love ireland, it rains but its still fukin class

  • Ha! I have to say that made me laugh...sums it all up really!

  • why so funny? the guy is amazing.

  • Paul is truly a class act. I wish those Irish-Americans I know would stop trying to pass off off When Irish Eyes are Smiling as trad and take a lesson from a great musician.

PS: I am a American Civil War reenactor and this is always fun to sing at reenactments. I have to say my voice is nothing like Mr. Brady. Lads in my unit throw things lol.

  • I love this, why doesn't he do it more!

  • A lifelong fan from co armagh saying brilliant , its made my night finding this .any chance of arthur mc b

  • it's in plain old open G

  • I'm a sham too sham.... Paul B is the dogs. Stop showing off with your open G. Paul has written some great stuff, like "The Island", Crazy Dreams .. I could go on, mush. Shamboree.

  • what in the hell are you talking about? i didn't say anything against paul brady

  • lol

  • the little mistake at 3:23 makes this version awesome....simply fantastic! :-)

  • simply amazing!!! Ireland is just the best for music!!! cant beat it !!!

  • he is amazing. i wonder if i asked him ( and payed him lots) , he would play it for me.

  • just brilliant.

  • He's breezin' through it. No bother to him at all, at all - top man!

  • deadly

  • how on earth do you get this people to play on ur balcony??? popularity through youtube ? or just contacts ;)

  • genialny sprawca nastroju... great

  • THIS IS SICK!

  • most of them should be thrown over the balcony, not this man , pure TALENT!!!

  • Well said!

  • some man for the DADGAD tuning or is it EADGAD?

  • Open G

  • Looks like its in G tuning with the low E down 2 steps to C?

  • that's it indeed, good spot.

  • thanks. I was doing open g, but you're right. thank you!

  • I'm learning that song at the moment, and it's coming together nicely.

  • the first time i saw paul brady it was on an interview about luke kelly, i didnt know who he was and thorght that he was just another phony player who didnt know what he was talking about, then i heard just the same old story and i can say that i have never been more wrong and i have never benn more sorry, it has taught me never to underestimate anyone... ever!!!!!!!! Good Man!

  • wow, brilliant guitar

    Steve

  • Mr.Brady!!Yes!

  • this is great ....but hey when its paul brady there is not much chance of anything else

  • Just stumbled on this, excellent performance. PB always has an interesting guitar sound too.

  • only the irish boy!

  • Paul Brady has been one of my few music idols since I was a child of the seventies when my older brother bought 'Welcome Here Kind Stranger' and we wore out the tape. I've remaine a massive fan to this day through all his changes in musical styles

  • AMAZIN Guitarist...Bought His Tutorial DVD Todaii...Cant w8 To Watch It :Dxox

  • Nice version of Mary and the Soldier.

Well done Paul, as usual !

  • Who's that presenter and where can we catch more of her? She is lovely!!

  • yeah, I'm digging her too

  • You rock Mr Brady!

  • well done paul you rightfully shook the balcony with that one!

  • So beautiful to hear on a dismal Los Angeles St Pats day. Do they make as big a deal of St Patrick's day in Ireland as they do in the US?

  • Bloody brilliant I hope one day soon i'll sea and hear you live when I'm over in Ireland, thanks for sharing.

    Hobbit

  • what tuning is he using?

  • Tuning is D B G D G D highest to lowest string (tonally speaking). Hope this helps.

  • please mr Brady, write every day a new song,

  • The man's a genius!

    Pure music, pure art,

    pure soul, pure heart.

  • proper stuff my friend

  • Thanks Stephen , Mr Paul Brady Is A true Legend , Peace Gerry

  • paul just serves the music so well, so clean on the guitar, and so much beauty and irish soul in his voice...makes me proud to be Irish-American

  • Wonderful song. Incredible performer and musician. Check out the 1977 version on YouTube with Paul and Andy. AMAZING!!

  • Paul at his best.

  • Fuck the critic on the guitar! Here's a man an a song. And what a man an what a song! I dare you all to outplay him. It's no use trying. He's one of the greatest of all time. Grab your guitar and play! No war! It's the singer and the song where it's about.

    Jobohead from Enschede

  • This is taken in one shot and Paul says he has not played this tune for few years. He is in shape here.

  • Anyone know if that's an Avalon rather than a Lowden he's playing - 2006? It's less abalone-laden than his Lowden.

  • it's a real one. he has 6, all custom made

  • It's aLowden, for sure.

  • Good song!

    Good guitar!!

    good you worked!

    Thanks,Friend!!!

    Victor from Moscow.

  • amazing seen him in live efore and was blown away

  • Legend , legend and I'll say it one more time LEGEND!!!

  • maybe you should add the fact that he loved luke kelly the only proper irish singer!!!

  • Luke Kelly? The only proper Irish Singer? Shut up ya dope. It shows how little you know. The best of Luke Kelly doesn't count as a musical education. Go back to your Damien Dempsey cds ya pea brain.

  • All Paul Brady fans really need to experience this, classic gorgeous guitar work..Effortlessly perfect..

From his classic album with Andy Irvine of Planxty.

  • More irish trad:

    watch?v=wp-r_PJ-G8I

  • Great show Paul. Thanks Balcony for posting it. Check my songs out on youtube at CELINE CARROLL '2 NEW SONGS IN A DIFFERENT SHIRT'

    Happy Trails....

  • Legend!

  • Thanks to Pauline Freeman and Stephen O Regen for presenting this brilliant singer/guitarist and I'll reiterate. This man is a national treasure to Ireland's great music tradition.

  • Paul, you're a national treasure for Ireland, and the slow-burning peat fire in my Irish-American heart! Long may ye run!

  • Just brilliant. Come back to West Australia soon Paul.

  • Well done Paul.! Let's keep the Irish music rockin'!

  • Paul your the best ever, you were born to play this music

  • I love this song... the 1977 version with Andy Irvine is even better..

  • GREAT STUFF PAUL

  • Pure gold.

  • thanks paul, twenty years down the road with you and you still give me goose-bumps. god bless. gabe, limavady

  • One of My favourits.

Does some one know Paul's guitar tuning?

  • Think it's open G drekes123

  • Yep ! Open G tuning. DGDGAE

  • That would be dBGDGD.

  • just magic paul

  • Still the best and will always be one of my favorite Irish singers. Does anyone really sing like this anymore?

    Thank you.

  • Paul was playing in a small pub in 1978 and they only were charging 1 punt. This song was on the playlist that night. Go raibh maith agat once again Paul.

  • The Johnstones are great aswell.

  • well fair feckin' play to you all!!! your man on fiddle is the 'craic' (he's even got the sligo/leitrim style off...hitting more than one string at a time) and you've got the guitar as percussion down like brady on the 'trio' album; get a flute player and you've captured the rest of the magic on that album (just when we were losing faith with the 'yankees'...some 'plastic' irish music out of the states AND we get that pox-bollix bill o'reilly and 'fecks news' here in ireland/uk now!!)

  • Saw Paul in Cheltenham a few years ago. absolutely awesome! Check out his website for a couple of guitar tabs.

  • Paul is brillaint. His old stuff with Matt Malloy/Tommy Peoples is the shit. Buy his album with Andy Irvine for the original version of the tune.

  • now your talking...tommy's got to be one of the best fiddle players of all time. even my uncle jimmy in leitrim (a fiddler himself and fan of michael coleman) 'borrowed' a tommy peoples (solo) album from me; i never saw it again 'till it was returned to me at his wake!!

  • Great story ;-). Do a YouTube search for "The Boston Kiltics" and thats me playing with fiddler Doug Lamey. Doug studied with Tommy Peoples when Tommy was living in Boston for a bit a couple years back. I'm a huge Paul Brady fan and do believe I even play the same model Lowden Guitar (mines a cutaway). Let me know what you think of the vid clip.

  • my mistake...just search for "Boston Kiltics" and you'll find it. We also have two beautiful ladies stepdancing with us who are worth the price of admission.

  • have you heard of stocktons wing? maurice lennon, the fiddle player comes from my mums village in leitrim (rossinver) where she was at school with his dad and uncle (ben and charlie lennon; their father was the local schoolteacher). nothing on youtube but google will no doubt throw out a few links. good luck with your music!!!

  • I recommend anyone to have a listen to the astonishing 1976 album "Andy Irvine and Paul Brady" that Paul refers to - see the Amazon reviews. I think he's playing a George Lowden guitar, also made in Northern Ireland.

  • Arthur mcbride is your only man!!

  • good man yourself!!!

  • Thanks Paul and Balcony for this lovely song

  • Paul brady is just superb

  • Paul brady !!! the best of the Best !!!

  • Fantastic!

    Love Paul's music

I see why it is called balcony TV

  • Ireland's finest.

Love Paul, great music check out his CD's.
