Actually, I've talked with some of the K9 units around here and I think part of the reason they use German is that most people around here don't speak German, so nobody else can walk up and attempt to give commands to the dog. That's what the units around here tell me.

Regardless, these are human languages - I wonder if these same dogs would understand dogs raised in another country.

@BigGermanBassoonist, human words have no meaning to dogs, they just recognize keysounds that they have learned to associate with something. if a german director would instruct a japanese dog, the dog would be confused because he wouldnt have anything to relate it to. perhaps gestures, but thats about it. dogs from different culture would probably communicate effortlessly, but a bit "unsurely". i reckon it'd be like american human talking to a briton. they speak the language, but still..
