I see a lot of comments from people that have evidently never been on a boat and know nothing about the engineering and power calculations that went into this.
I am an EE and I own a sailboat. What you present here looks perfectly plausible. Thanks for the presentation, and if I had the need, I would buy one.
Nice job. After seeing an all electric airplane a couple years ago I realized that the future of transportation is in electric power. A few more years of battery tech innovation and we will start seeing real changes.
EETechs I would for off like to say after reading it for the 6th time because i couldn't understand the first 5 times, seems as those that thing doesn't have enough balls to crank over even a v4.. U don't even know how much i hate retorted hippies that think they know everything about mechanics, because they watch a youtube video on how to grease the driveshaft. good luck gunslinger
hey guys sorry to break the news to you but when i was in grade 2 i was standing on a bar then i fell and the bar hit me in between my legs. i started to cry then i pulled down my pants and saw that my balls were bleeding. i am currently 18 years old and i have not jizzed ever and the size of my penis is 3 inches. please someone help me out.
what is the point in that converting a 9.9hp perfectly good engine into a shitty 2hp eletric outbord i dont see the point your best of getting a electric motor readybuilt you have just waisted a good engine
Put your mind at ease, the 9.9 hp gas Yamaha was rescued from going to the dump. As is tipical with gas motors used in the ocean, it had siezed up. Having been converted to electric almost 4 years ago now, it has run perfectly and has had no need for gas or oil. I have also converted a junked Honda 9.9 to 10 hp DC electric with similar good results. Today there are lots of newer & better systems available out there, look around and see what is available and coming.
@porpoisefathom thats why ill keep mine thanks and a lot of petrol and plus they carnt change them over that fast so your wrong you fucking eco nerd yuor gunna be some person that goes around driving electric car

@jordyboy0129 iv'e proven my point to all here by revealing your childish reactions...you took the bait. now you look like an ass...of course you feel threatened by newer technology since your a mechanic of fossil fuelled vehicles- whether the evironment is truly fucked or not- the future is gonna guys like you fossils...
ive accomplished my job of pissing you off...over and out...
@porpoisefathom you havent pissed me of because i know electric thing are slow plus if you think about how electric is made it turnes out that they burn fossil fuels to make it so if you think about it your better of using fossil fuels anyway check out my chanel look at my boats and outboards. who cares about different types of fuels anyway. all made up lets not be childish and argue lol
@jordyboy0129 you are correct Gas/diesel/ will always be more effective because they can run longer. One way of looking at this is- for about 50 cents i can buy a cup of diesel. I can run a backhoe for about 5 minutes or so on cup of it and dig a few cubic yards, Now if asked someone to dig a few cubic yards of earth for 50 cents--they would politley tell me where to go....this is why gas is so effective. Kudo's for truce!
@porpoisefathom yes but electric will always be there for silent fishers and things but i will say that diesel and petrol will go on for ages until we run out of that damb good crude oil. but i will use petrol and derv as long as it lasts
@jordyboy0129 I hope you are correct- but in mho,We are nearing the end of the production of those types of fuels- probably in our lfietimes and possibly in the very near future. There is the possibiity that corn fuels could be used. however--this would be as disastrous due to the large tracts of land needed to grow more crops-which in turn means more clearcuts, deforestation, pollution of water due to phosphates, and land erosion due to lack of growth underpinning.
@porpoisefathom plus people will not use electric cars and boats for long as they will take too long to refuel or should i say charge up which is summert like 1 h where it takes summert like 1 min or less to fill a car with pet or dies i supose electric outboard eg min kota are good for fishing and quit lakes though
@jordyboy0129 thank you for responding in a way we can actually communicate- Yes very true about the fossil fuels being used to make them...the issue in the future is probably one of two things--gas will become more expensive and therefore only the elite will be able to afford fuel. 2. Or gas wont be available. I dont like that electric takes so long to recharge--this is why its not used as prime movers. If tomorrow gas was gone- we would have either steam or electric motors.
@jordyboy0129 depends on the electric motor. Electric motors have better torque and some are rated under load. Some have thicker windings can also be overvolted for 2x more power. Cook a few and find out. It's fun.
If you would like to go with me for a ride and see for yourself you are more than welcom to come along. The batteries are at least 100 to 150 amp hr and the motor is 2 hp but I run at about 0.8 hp as that brings the boat to max speed due to the pitch of the prop. If you want to see a fast electric boat take a look at the electric hydroplane that does about 100 miles per hr. Now that is realy something to see.
I resently ran a test to answer your question using my 20 ft boat and found that one set of batteries with no extra power supplied from the solar pannels lasted 6 hrs. This is some what longer than 10 min, By the way, this is the second year I have been running this old set of used batteries I picked up for $30/ea.
@48jimd2 hay well done for thinking outside the square. Does anyone know what type of boat the Pepper Pot is, and where i can find one? im in australia, but it is soo cheap for us to buy things from the canada and the states and import them right now.
So im wondering, if you wanted to spend the day out on the lake with the high speed system you were talking about, how long would 2 batterys last. 6 Gallons of gas will last us all day on the lake, well, thats when the carb isnt clogged! But, cool.
At this time, using both the solar and hydrogen fuel cell charging systems, the boat runs all day and into the night. On July 1st, I will be going for my anual 25 mile run from my winter harbour at Gold Stream to my summer beach house on Haro strait. I do not get places as fast as I would like, but at least it is quite and the point of going out on the water is to enjoy the experience.
My hydrogen to power the motor will be produced from a new Palacn electrolyzer sytem that is powered from green energy sources, e.g. solar, wind, etc.
Petrolium power gives you more bang for your buck; at this time, but as has been demonstrated in the Gulf of Mexico petrolium has other devestating costs that all of us need to start changing away from. Start with the hybrid system on my other boat, the sloop Jim D, that way you get the best of both worlds.
So that is a gas motor that you converted to electric then? If so... 1. how did you connect the electric motor to the old drive shaft? Also, why do use use an inverter? why not just a DC motor? (sorry for newbie questions)
A plate was mounted inside the upper section of the motor using the old gas engine mounting holes. The electric motor was mounted to the plate on stand offs to allow for a sprocket & chain connection to the drive shaft. The sprocket was tack welled to the drive shaft.
There were several reasons to use the 2 hp AC motor, first it was less exspense than a DC motor of the same size. Second fewer batteries are required to get the same RPM by using a frequency speed contoller. This also reduced the overall systems wieght. Third it seemed to me that an outboard gas motor has little torque at low speed and high torque at high speed, the same as an AC motor, so I thought I should try and see what would happen, and it worked better than expected.
The Pepper Pot is an 18 ft home built displacement haul. I will be removing the Yamaha and upgrading it to a 3400 RPM Leeson motor this spring. That will increase the prop speed by a factor of 2 bringing it to a gas engine equivalent. The motor will then go onto a 12 ft aluminum boat to see how it works. We plan to install a single RT202/EM Min Kota onto Ian's 20 horse outboard, similar to the drive on my 20 ft sailbaot the "Jim D".
220 & 240 VAC are quite common on boats. I would recommend using a GFI with the system. The 240 VAC is sourced from a 3000 watt, 24 VDC to 240 VAC single phase inverter built by Kipiont and has worked flawlessly for over 2 years.
hahahah NOOB, fastest car in the world is Buggatti Veyron 250mph, NOT EVEN AT TOP SPEED, you should watch top gear AND really research your stuff, and ive seen supposive power eltric boats, there nothing againt even a 6hp GALE
fuck eletric GAS BITCHES only wa to go i have a 235hp racer on my checkmate FUCKIN ELETRIC ARE PIECES OF SHIT. How long does that last 5 minutes going 0.2 mph
Hey checkmate, go fuck yourself. Some people want to experiment with different stuff so let them do that. Someone should kick your fucking ass, you piece of shit redneck loser.
@checkmate235evinrude Go hook your precious 235 HP gas engine up to a 50 HP electric and see what happens. I will be laughing when the 50 HP electric motor just rips out your engine's crankshaft without even bogging down! It would be like it was never there to begin with. I rather have torque any day over low torque gas and diesel engines.
you cannot run that slow boat with all the solor pannels from the international space station for verry long. Those panels you have might charge the batteries over hours and hours but is just as renuable as anything. Its just not what we are looking for to go green. Its a step but there are thousands that do it. I have a hybrid elec motor that relates to 25HP 2 stroke and planes out my 18' glass boat at 29 MPH so its nothing new.
There are two British Petroleum solar panels that together put out 170 watts at 24-30 volts nominally. The original system used 2 of 15 watt Canadian Tire solar pannels.
The motor is a generic 3 phase motor that puts out 2 hp at full power. However I only run it at about 1.5 hp and I get 1.5 hours of cruising on a charge. Perfect for the inner harbour of Victoria.
How long will this run at max capacity, and how long does it take to charge and what brand electric motor did you use and where did you get the solar panels and what is their wattage?
For Batteries I am using 4 deep discharge batteries which are rated at 25 amps continuous for 160 minutes. Two sets are in parallel for 24 volts at 50 amps continuous. At 1.5 hp the system draws 50 amps. To run it at maximum power of 2 hp I need to add two additional batteries because it will draw 75 amps.
I also notice that if I drop the power to 1hp I get almost 2 hours of run time. A charge takes about 6 hours, the sun comes up at 6AM by 11 or 12 the boat is ready to go.
You didn't invent anything besides a quip remark. Oh, and solar power is what, free? Environmental, so what are you so insecure about yourself you have to beat down this video and waste people's time, rather that adding something constructive to society. We create our society each time we interact with another person. What kind of society did you create today?

ok fellas i see you're using on a sail boat, but what about a 200hp bass boat, what wt
would be needed to haul up up the lake at 50mph for maybe 3hrs, is this feasible?
their is a glooming problem with the gas we're using now it has ethanol in it..
that's bad gas, electric might work even if you have to slow down a bit........
i'd use an old fork lift controller and a dc motor, i'd be alot cheaper.....
