When Clapton played with Mayall, the "Clapton is God" graffiti started showing up around London. When Green replaced him, the graffiti became, "Green is better than God."
@seankeane1000 This may sound ignorant and naive, but is that true? Because if not, it certainly deserves to be, I don't mean to troll but it is my honest opinion, that Green, was 10 times the blues player Clapton ever was, and ever will be.
I still remember the liner notes on Yardbirds with Clapton: "on his best nights Clapton makes time stand still". Same for Green. But on these Mayall disks actually Peter Green was always a bit my favorite. Comparing mangoes with persimmons, all so wonderful, but I have to say it since Clapton is by far the more famous, Green needs his due...
Anyway both show it ain't about fast, it's about the feeling.
one of the greatest storys in Rock and Roll blues - Holy shit - Eric is leaving the bluesbreakers - damn - oh well - very hard shoes to fill indeed - in steps Peter Green and good god man - damn - would love to have been there that first night he played to an audience quite surprized to found taht there was someone else who could actually fill Erics shoes and then some !!!!!!
@bigbuzman Actually, it wasn't Peter who filled Eric's shoes until, concert after concert, Peter finally persuaded Mayall to give him a chance. "Why, that guitarist you have. He's no good at all. I'm better than him." Mayall, of course, just thought he was a crank until .... Once he got his chance, there was no looking back. That said, the crowds were cruel to Peter until .... they shut their prejudice and loyalty and opened up their ears. Listen to Fleetwood Mac Stockholm 1970. Oh, my!

"John Mayall's Bluesbreakers: A Hard Road" & be sure to get the 2003 remastered CD with all 36 tracks! Because this isn't on the original CD or vinyl LP. My very favourite CD! Ever.
@doggzma - This album is called "Raw Blues", a collection of London Records B Sides from 1966 that is out of print.
This is the only Peter Green track - "Evil Woman Blues". Clapton appears on quite a few tasty cuts, including Champion Jack Dupree's (check him out) "Calcutta Blues" and "24 Hours".
There are a few sellers on Amazon who want over $30 for this CD - I have it somewhere in my collection.
@doggzma - Search "CHAMPION JACK DUPREE 1-CALCUTTA BLUES 2-24 HOURS" here on YouTube for a few RARE killer tracks from the "Raw Blues" album, featuring Clapton & Mayall.

guitarharp's response then begs the question? . . . If you ara traveling in space in your electra 225 at the speed of light and you turn your head lights on, would they do anything?
thats a tough one their both great guitarists u cant go wrong with either although peter green doesnt have very much material what he does have is amazing
true. i just think peter green has much more emotion into his work. clapton with cream was great but after that it just started getting a little bland in my opinion
That tone! if anyone at this time could step in for Clapton it had to be Peter Green and he did one hell of a job following claptons departure from john mayall
I wouldn't be without the recordings which Clapton made with John Mayall, or my vivid memories of seeing them 'live' but it is Peter's playing which I need to hear constantly. My current favourite is the work he did with Eddie Boyd, which spans two albums. The first was with The Bluesbreakers, the second with Fleetwood Mac.
No doubt you know this already - I clarified it for those who don't know.
There's five or six tracks, all excellent. Peter's tone was never sweeter, in my opinion.
If you're going to investigate the CD, 'Eddie Boyd & His Blues Band', get the Gott Discs version, as the mastering is superb. Forget the Deram issue.
And 'The Big Boat', which you refer to, is ok but not the best of the songs which Ediie Boyd cut with Fleetwood Mac, which is on Blue Horizon, a patchy but essential album for Green fans.
You're very welcome. That's what YouTube is for as far as i'm concerned, not for slagging each other off because we don't rate Joe Bonamassa (for example) or whoever.
Both of the CDs I mentioned are first-rate treats for P.G. fans. Let me know what you think of them!
I can't seem to find that Eddie Boyd & His Blues Band album. Anyone way you could send it to my email. I was listening to it on Youtube and you're right. Green's tone is beautiful
EC played -based on all the standards, he learned in his youth - since then - he did not change a lot. He certainly is a highly talented guitar player; once he played with beatles he got the image... after all... Greeny is a much more better artist. His play was based on melody and harmonies. He had his "Layla" in 1967-1970. And he never had a hanky panky with his best friends wife.
That's an interesting comment. I agree with you but I'll say that current ways of thinking, based on Einstein's theories and other info., suggest that, as time is not linear - and it doesn't move, we move through it - then other lives must be concurrent, not past.
Therefore, maybe Peter is an artist in another life and has not suffered as he did in this life, in the other life - or lives!
I saw him play many times and I have vivid dreams about him still playing as well as he did.
In regards to time, referencing past, present, and future is just easier for people to understand. Saying a "concurrent life" as opposed to a "past life" would cause most folks to just scratch their heads and then you have to digress and explain the theory etc. :-)
Peter is a very interesting person with a compelling story. I love his playing and he has one of the most soulful voices I've ever heard.
Thanks for your reply. You're right of course. That reply was just for you and anyone else prepared to think a little deeper. I confess that it took me a while to understand it.
Peter has been a big part of my (musical) life. I contributed to his biography as I had seen him play so many times and I was a close friend of his close friend, Duster Bennett. Duster was careful not to introduce me to Peter (c 1971-2) as Peter sometimes had little time or regard for those who openly admired him.
Thanks for the reply. Wow, that's very interesting. I'd like to read that biography. I heard that a documentary about him recently aired in the UK. I'd like to see that too.
My brother was playing Green Manalishi by Judas Priest over and over one day so I played him the original and he forgot all about the Judas Priest version. Now, he's fascinated by Peter Green :-)
You obviously play guitar and harp. I wish I could play harp. I play lead guitar in a blues / rock cover band in Ohio.
The biography is good but it could have been better. Much of the detail - provided by John Mayall, Jenny Boyd (Patti's sister) and myself, was edited out, so for that reason and the fact that it sells for around $60 on Amazon, I am reluctant to recommend it unless you get the chance to read some first.
Peter and Duster inspired me to play harp. I love Peter's playing; it's the same as his voice and guitar work!
It's great fun and very satisfying to play harp, that's for sure.
Bluesstormusic has the Martin Celmins bio for $10.95 new. The website owner is a huge Peter Green fan. Accoding to the Celmins bio, Peter had a "biker" phase, was that around '71-'72? It was also around that time Bob Brunning came to visit to play some material Peter did with his band in '69. Apparently Peter didn't want to hear any music whatsoever just go down to the local pub to drink. Such a shame.
Someone here mentions 'flashbacks'...I went to see Peter play in the early days of The Splinter Group and I had to leave because I could hardly see the man on stage for seeing him as he was between 1966-70. It was a very strange experience.
He seems happier these days, I'm glad to say. I wish him well. His music has given me as much pleasure as anyone's.
Showers of Rain... that's good. You summed it up there. I think the blue-note (flat 5th) turns the clouds into falling rain. Whoever was that genius who found the blue note, and decided on playing minor scales over dominant 7th chords. I'm sure he did not think 'let's play a minor scale over dominant 7th chords' bye the way : ) Genius.

I read that Peter Green really wanted to give all his wealth away ,much to the dismay of his fellow band mates! Lot of talk in the 60's about sharing and not being rich, but only Peter actually wanted to do it.BEATLES and all the rest only paid lip service to "GIVE IT AWAY".JOHN LENNON A WORKING CLASS HERO ? @xebec30 Yes, it is true. I worked at Fillmore East 1968/70. Mayall was one of my favorite BBB's (BritBluesBands)
I got the graffiti story from John McVie, who played base with both of them while with Mayall.
He did alright for himself later, too.

Lovely pictures and good song.

RIGHT!!! LOVE YOU JOHN ,BUT ....

Yeah it's great. Peter Green is my all time favorite.
Just a note. Green replaced Eric Clapton in the Blues Breakers in 1966.He left in 1967 taking Fleetwood with him.J McVie
left BB and joined Green, Fleetwood, and Jeremy Spencer a
short time later and Fleetwood Mac was officially born. Danny Kirwan came on board in '68.

You lucky bastard. I would give my left nut to see them shows. Good Blues is right.

Yes.......it was long ago now and John Mayall
tours seemingly only in North America.
Without these guys we would never have heard of the Blues.
