Didn't for me, instead it made me more clever, my spelling improved and my art skills also improved as I became a graphics designer, now making money from graphic designing and soon doing GCSE'S in graphics early due to my graphics teacher seeing my graphics and being amazed.
Ok so given the idea of neuroplasticity is it also possible that the reverse could be true? For example ive noticed every 5 years im twice as smart as i was 5 years ago. Im not gloating or any junk like that just its kind of a curious thing to me.
yes scary thought, not 100% sure myself cos i havnt had much time to read long things like books lately lol
still, id imagine youd see the exact same F patterns with books if every smuck around with enough fingers to type was allowed to publish their own drivel filled books... oh wait, that sort of happens anyway
but seriously though, isnt it really just the content and the way we use it thats the problem? not the actual internet? like if its such a problem we could simply improve/change it?
This really made me think, and now I can see why I can barely concentrate when re-reading lecture notes even though my lectures are really interesting (to me anyway)
It's going to be interesting to see how this will affecting the next generation ? since computers/tablets are replacing books in schools now :S
@GemmaSynderella I think that might have a positive effect, as in school you would have to focus on reading text with less distractions getting the association with hard reading/concentration going.
Thought provoking video Dave. I find I need to print out long emails in order to properly read and comprehend their full meaning. Skimming on screen often misses important detail.
wow, a brilliant, informing video... I spend so much time just surfing, i feel guilty now, especially since i left education 2 years and rejoined recently i notcied that the way i thought and my ideas took a dramatic blow, I've felt myself become dumber.
Your roof is still fucked, do something about it. Oh by the way, could someone do a summary or this video, was spending too much time noticing that annoying ceiling.
of course people are jumping over large portions of text, reason? too much bs?! I'm constantly reading news, but... as in most news... there are a lot of lines and even paragraphs just to make the amount of information look "long".
I'm open to bet you that if you take 10 articles out of any website, 50% of content of each article is BS or "own opinion", and more than 5 of 10 articles have nothing that one can learn, not to mention the amount of ads... so yea... Internet is making us dumb...
over roughly 12 years of about 6-10 hours of internet use a day gave me all the symptoms of ADHD and now I even need to take ritalin if i wan't to even be aware of what's going on during my classes :(
@duminicad yeah but the inability to read a page of text, or drive my car, or do my homework is screwing me in the short run. I've had a few doctors all explain the effects and consequences of Ritalin, and it is far off from speed believe me.
@Dracokhi don't assume that doctors know everything, remember, we need issues so that we have a need for doctors, and yes, Ritalin is like speed, especially if one takes 2-3 pills/day for extended period.
The issues we have with "inability to focus" is due to our times, we have so much information and so little time to absorb, that we skip the BS and sometimes even important info in an article.
Do you have any idea how much info/day we get these days compared to 10-20 years ago? A LOT!!!
Skimming if an incredibly useful like skill that is required to make the most efficient use of your time. We can only retain a finite amount of data, so we avoid filling our brain with useless junk. This is why cutting the crap is getting to the important points is vital.
As much as I am not a reader, This is why reading books is still so important. I read alot of text on a computer screen, however I dont skim unless I am researching something that I need for, say a school assignment
Dave, I know you got insulation put into your roof... But why haven't you cleaned up the mess yet? Dose not seem as though it would be a massive task.. :P
I cannot describe the good the internet has done for me. Sure i lose interest in stuff a little quicker but only if its boring. Besides skimming an article well is a valuable skill.
My patience and ability to stand reading long texts does in fact decline, but I don't think the Internet makes us stupider. How many facts do we know just because we debate, read, watch, surf the Internet? Sharing information spreads intellect and makes the world a more educated place, in my opinion.
very interesting as this is very true for me atleast when it comes to memory and focus (I too cant read a book for long) however I would argue that a more likely factor to it is that I dont work out. however I do consider my ability to objectivly analys something decent compared to most and supposedly math helps with this.
The vast majority of humanity has always lacked proper logic and critical thinking skills. This should seem apparent given our history and current religious movements bent on suppressing scientific inquiry.
Recent study results seem to be showing an increase of our capacity for critical thinking over the last century.
In terms of the internet, I would be more inclined to blame the lazy reader for their own loss of cognitive function, which would not occur had they simply read pages in full.
Good video, never thought of it that way. I generally read entire articles, but I also get destracted easily. I wonder if it's possible to reverse the process. I would think so, but I'm not sure.
The reason I skim is largely due to the utter overload of crap on the Internet, especially when considering the low journalistic standards of many popular publications. However, I do think skimming is a valuable quality, as long as you maintain your ability to read longer works (endurance).
Lastly, I think the lack of need to memorize facts is a benefit, as we can use our brain power for thinking instead of memorization. No need to clutter the mind with facts that can easily be looked up.
@TalesOfWar How does my comment say anything about my opinion of Apple? Not to mention, your implication is very presumptuous... as I don't hate Apple, hate is a strong word...
Last time I checked, commenting on subject isn't mandatory...
Dave, this is very insightful. I feel it happening to me more and more every day. Thank you for reminding me, I will try to force myself to read things more carefully from now on.
I think this all started accelerating with modern browsers introducing TABS. I regularly have 10+ tabs open with varying things open for me to read later. I can hardly watch a long (6+min) youtube video without finding myself pausing and switching to another task. I need to close all these other tabs now!
Au contraire, my grammar and spelling has improved vastly since using the internet on a daily basis. I have evidence of this in my writing. I can still critically read a text rather well. The internet can't be the scapegoat of everything else that is ridiculing our intelligence and encouraging stupidity. It's a vast well of information to be freely tapped by anyone with a computer. My school has a laptop program. We use the internet every day and we can still manage to do better than most.
If I would have to read WHOLE articles ALL time, I would still be reading articles which I've long lost interest in... finding what's essential is KEY and NOT what you skip!
Not only are we becoming "dumbed down" and dependent upon the instant access of the internet to research elements of our world that are worth of DISCOVERING, but the English language -- among others -- has taken a rather large blow with constant misspellings, grammatical errors (the "your/you're" debacle) and egregious bastardization of terms such as "fail" due to the internet's ever-encompassing influence in our daily lives.
In short, get out....live a little. Discover the world for yourself.
@QuietSundayLibrary I can't speak for everyone, but I used the internet to improve my spelling, grammar and vocabulary. Although I see the truth in what you're saying.
@QuietSundayLibrary This is how language evolves, it's happened since the beginning of time when we first grunted at one another. It used to be considered wrong to say "you" instead of "thou" for example. Some things are disturbing, but on the whole, it's just the way things are. Irony is a good example of something that's often misused. Eventually it'll come to mean what most people THINK it means rather than what it DOES mean (now at least). It's the nature of the beast so to speak.
@QuietSundayLibrary I agree, particularly with the "your/you're" part. Also, MSN was renamed to Windows Live Messenger in 2005, yet people still call it 'MSN', simply because they know if they say 'MSN', the other person will know what they mean. I also don't like the way words such as "fail", where they are too popular amongst images which may not even be funny at all. Another thing, is that we rely on word processor spell-checkers and grammar checkers to do the work for us, even if it's wrong.
As much as people argue that meaning dictates use, when you get down to it, the argument is backwards. Use dictates meaning, and it always has. If use didn't dictate meaning, we would still be speaking in Elizabethan English. There wouldn't be dialects. I agree that people should get out, but I don't think people are getting dumbed down. Newspeak might be seeping through the text of 1984, but I think language is just taking its natural evolutionary course.
There's only so much time in a day, we do not have time to read an entire story of information. I only have 3 hours of time to read the internet of what I search and do, the rest is spent working and sleeping. We just do not have time to read every single word of a paragraph, there will never be enough time to do everything.
