Could you post the clip later in the movie when Ben Hur gives Christ a drink after he has fallen down while carrying His Cross? That would make a great companion piece. Thanks.
I totally recommend this film for everyone. Ok, maybe not a Muslim. Hmm, then again, maybe a Muslim. The film is of the best kind. God bless Metro Goldwin Meyer. The last of the Christian corporations in the film world.
Although Lew Wallace's book and movie are clearly fictional, it's perhaps this scene which captures the mission and message of Jesus Christ more clearly than most Christians could every hope to communicate.
The point is that there is no human face that could represent the face of Jesus. Instead of that, the director shows Jesus from the back and the Roman centurion. It can not be seen well in this video, but when centurion sees Jesus, his face reflects feelings of surprise, wonder, awe, admiration, weakness, fury... In this way the director creates the image of Jesus in each viewer individually. Ingenious, isn’t it? The expression on Charlton Heston’s face completes that image. That's the point!
Very well said! Any scene is more powerful when it's left up to the viewer's imagination! THANKS for an articulate, intelligent, thoughtful & sensitive comment! :-)
The Navajo say "The waters of truth work their way up thru the sands of deception". Here tho, the truth is the Christ, who brings the water of life back to this pleading man. With a touch of the hand.
that was the esence of christ he loved everybody no matter what their race or religion or even sex thats why i belive in jesus chtist beacause he loves everyone gay catholic prodistant muslim or hinu
Powerful scene. I loved the look on the centurion's face. He felt the goodness and greatness eminating from Christ and could not raise his hand to him.
Music and expression from Heston is also very powerful.
One of the most classic of classic films in nature. Ben Hur is one of those movies that people can watch many times without tiring. Charlton Heston was immortalized with the character. Simply amazing.
Why do you all believe that this scene is for real. Its just a film. And why does this man have to be divine to show compassion. What if he was just a man like you or I. Suerly to show human compassion without a need to please a divinity is far more profound.
@planitia76 To show human compassion is a thirst in all of us, even Caesar showed a lot of 'Clemente' to his prisoners. But you know those times when you're too tired to show it for others... if you do then for God is the real compassion and the most profound.
The over bearing and powerful presence of Christ just froze the Cent in his tracks, thats how I read it, no hand can come against the Lord...Cent was helpless...sweet scene
Lord Jesus Christ.....how you have come to me in my time of need...the beautiful blue light of your infinite presense at the time of my divorce and the presense of the Lord as I walked the grounds of the prison yard. Thank you Father, one day I will be worthy of holding your Light, for it is to strong for this sinner in this lifetime. Namaste.
Its crazy how I tried to distance myself from christianity actually nearly convinced myself I was no longer a believer then I see this and I just feel desperation to regain my faith.
I was a bit confused about the Roman's reaction actually. I would have thought a pagan Roman whose alleigance lies with the Emperor would not be worried by what would, in Roman eyes, appear to be some Jewish oike.
@EmperorHarold There is no human face that could represent the face of Jesus. Instead of that, the director shows Jesus from the back and the Roman centurion.
I watched this movie once in Social Studies. I used to be an atheist, but this movie and the reading the bible helped me change my ways. Now I am a true christian
This is my favorite scene among all the films. The best. Far the best. Jesus is indeed almighty. Even those who do not belive in him, should accept that love is stronger than everything.
Jesus, the Good Shepherd, was tending to one of His lost sheep, Ben-Hur. Then that mean-faced Roman soldier tried to stop Him...,Then Christ became the "Lion of Judah".
O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.- Psalm 63:1
i read this verse and instantly thought of this scene
Remember we were a thrusting once in the desert. And When we called out who came. Look at those hands, and the Love in them. And in that time He gave us the Living Water. And after drinking from that well We were able to carry on. And on the day of pentacost we were also given the Holy Spirit. And now He is with us Always. Blessed is He who comes in name of the Lord.
we should all learn from this. When do you see anyone stop to talk to a homeless person on the street and buy him/her a cup of tea or give some food. These simple acts of kindness can make a big difference to that person
"woe to he who fighteth his maker" he couldnt do it, the authority of God is to high no man can comprehend his power. Because he is the creator of heaven and earth.
This film powerfully resonates God's love like no other. I heard the testimony of a former member of the IRA. He watched "Ben-Hur" while in prison, and the demonstration of God's love in the film transformed his life. He is now a pastor. As humans, we are driven in our search for the highest quality and love, which cannot be explained through evolution. Many say that man has a need to create God. I say that we were hard-wired by God to seek Him.
Thanks for posting---back when movies were made with genuine class and Christianity wasn't spat upon by the now drugged out anti-right anti-American Hollywood. Also recommend "El Cid" with the great Mr. Heston if anyone hasn't had a chance to see. God bless.
probably the best movie scene in history

I'd like to think that this was the same centurion (described in Luke) that goes to Jesus to intercede for his sick servant...
...as well as the centurion that stood at the foot of the cross and exclaimed "Truly He was the Son of God."
