  • @combustiblelemon

Tell your band director that the tuba/sousaphone was one of the instruments that was almost always used in original jazz bands it's true and in my opinion all jazz needs a little tuba

  • My director says that tubas do not belong under any circumstance in jazz. This is the most depressing thing I've ever heard her say. Some day.. Bang! Boom! I'll be there.

  • I have this song on the Gerhard Meinl Tuba Sextet cd. (Tuba - A Six Tuba Romp). It rocks there, it rocks here. Very good performance.

  • I love jazz tuba so much jon sass is my idol

  • 7chan brought me here

  • Someone at 7clams has good taste in music.

  • Its funny how I started watching this video off of 7chan

  • @TheiPCGeek rules 1 and 2 newfag

  • @narbagepl0x only apply to raids, ahh sweet irony!!!

  • @GamerFloTV well I said rules 1 and 2 with the intention of trolling someone who would reply YOU FAGGOT THATS 4CHAN

but no, you actually replied and said the rules and what they meant, the 'rules' are nonexistant. they were made by some anon, not an admin or mod or anything.

and furthermore, the rules are for 4clams, not our glorious motherchan 7chan. you sure are some sort of freemason

  • @narbagepl0x cool story bro

  • @TheiPCGeek The only rule that applies to me is rule 34

  • I think he hit the brown note: }

  • What kind of tubas are the playing with? Is it a EEb?

  • They play 1 F Tuba and 2 C Tubas

  • @heavyheimo thanks

  • @Noogit1 im a girl tuba player. i resent your comment. :/ thought u should know.

  • Damn this brings back some memories... played electric bass AND tuba in jazz band, traded off with a friend of mine that played bass and trumpet for different songs.

  • Wow.....your are the best. !!!

  • what song is this?

  • @tailyrthesailer meltdown

  • THIS IS SO COOL!

  • Obviously thiss a great song!!

nevertheless there some thing that I'd like to change.

  • This is just awesome. I first heard it done by the "Five Tubas" years ago. For those of you commenting on the baritones and euphoniums and e-flat horns...they are all part of the tuba family, So when they say tuba, it includes these horns. But most importantly...DON'T let this argument take anything away from the performance and skill of these musicians!! Does it really matter what instruments accompany great musicians?!!

  • Pretentious.

    Standards are sliding...

  • click on more info and one of the tags is "euphoniums". That obviously means that there are euphoniums in the video. Gee, i wonder where they are - o wait! they're in the back!

  • Comment removed

  • the ones in the back are euphoniums. I don't know what your triping about

  • dude, i played euphonium for 5 years and i am currently playing tuba - i know that tubas are much deeper. there's no way that those back ones are tubas. too small and too high (example - 1:03 and 2:08). pause it at 1:47 - u can definetly tell that those are euphoniums.

  • Comment removed

  • @thedude309

idk, im not an expert, but i know enough to tell tubas and euphoniums apart and those in the back are euphoniums. you can tell by the size and the pitch.

  • why do those euphoniums NOT sound like euphoniums?

  • I think they might actually be trombone players on the side...ans no they are not 3/4 size tubas...

  • Because they're playing like men. They're putting a LOT of air through them.

  • does anyone know how to get the sheet music for this?

  • first tuba jazz piece ive listened too and its simply awesome.

  • This is so badass!

  • John Sass... One of the Bests ! Great Performance... and so Easy ^_^

  • the tuba in a jazz band prejudice is the same as guys playing flute. when i played flute thats all i ever heard from people is that its a girl instument. its not really the same thing but close. i played flute for 4 years then swicthed to tuba cause we didnt have any tubas. been playing tuba for 3 years now and i love it.

  • I play Tuba in my Jazz Band, i just play the bass line,

it sounds more Raw with a Tuba

  • two words....DIXEYLAND JAZZ...ever heard ot the Dirty Dozen Brass Band?

  • Armstrong, Miles Davis, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Kenton and Don Ellis all used tuba. Joe Tarto played tuba in dozens of the best jazz bands in history. I played in high school, 2/3 of the time on original parts written for tuba. In university, they had that same tuba prejudice - until I auditioned with a Don Ellis piece. Difficult music and tuba part prominent. I was in and parts to play about 3/4 of the time. Not playing all the time meant I had lip left when it counted.

  • The dirty dozen do NOT play dixieland.

  • You couldn't be more WRONG.

  • Look up a tuba player named Bill Barber then tell me there's no tuba in jazz. Thats like saying there is no flute in jazz.

  • Tuba in a jazz band? Listen to "Big Alice" by Howard Johnson and Gravity. That should answer your question.

  • haha thats why they invinted the bass trombone so us tuba guys can get in on the jazz action :)....

  • This makes me love my jazz band. Hearing about all these asses who won't let kids in the jazz band. Our instructor is coolest. Hip young genius-professor of a guy. We have TWO jazz tubas. Me and another girl. We play trombone parts.

    :D

  • lucky!!!! our jazz band doesnt accept tubas but, sadly im the only one now...

  • our band doesnt let tuba's in jazz band grrr.

  • i tried out for jazz band and made it. but our gay ass director made me play bass bone

  • Having tubas in jazz band are pretty sweet, but it rarely happens. I play tuba and trombone and I've been to competitions where they substitute tubas for bass bones and the timbre of the whole group changes a lot. A tuba in a jazz as a solo feature is awesome, but having it as part of the band as a whole just makes it sound weird, in my opinion.

  • This makes me wanna go punch our band teacher in his face for not lettin me in jazz band!

  • this is awsome

  • this is incredible!!!

  • lol in my jazz band someone asked me if i wished i played a real jazz instrument (i play tuba in the jazz band) and i laughed and said "But i do" and anyone who doesnt beleive that should watch this video!

  • i agree with you. i play flute in my school's jazz band XD

  • My jazz band doesn't even accept tuba players.

I'm still tryin to talk my director into lettin me in(I play tuba). He says that their only tuba parts for jazz band are "beginning jazz" pieces.

  • Exactly. Any instrument can be a "real jazz instrument"...a person just has to know how to play jazz in order to pull it off!

  • in this video the guys play vervy exactly, who´s the solo tuba player? maybe john sass?? help me please

  • Yes. It is definately Sass. The guy is a tuba stud.

  • man itss great to see pros breaking down walls i mean not many people think tubas make good swing instruments thats why i joined my university's jazz band on tuba because the director said tubas don't belong.

  • Tubas just make it more intersting, I'm thinking about joining jazz band, and i just switched from trombone to tuba, and our director said he wanted me to stay on trombone for when the jazz band came along, but I could go from Bb to Bb to F to Bb, but its really confusing because they're are to many Bb's, on my 3rd or 4th time picking up a tuba

  • when i was in high school i wasnted to join the band but they didnt let mein cause i was a tuba. this is one good vid

  • wow... I love that last part especially... those low pedal tones.. awesome!!

  • Does anyone know where I can find the score please ? :-D (serial number, etc)

  • @ KennytheBassist: He played a 4-valve Tuba.

It´s incredible what he can do with only 4 valves, isn´t it?

    I play a 6-valve f-tuba and I can´t believe what I hear.

He´s the greatest Tuba player on our Earth

    Im Sassified^^

    Jon Sass 4 ever

  • It looks to me like he's using a 4+1 tuba. (4 pistons + 1 rotary) If you take a look at his tuba in the close shots, you can see a round brass area just above the first valve where his fingers are. Right near the end of the piece you can see his thumb and the linkage move.

  • PLAYY THAT SASSAPHONE

    :)

  • Question, is Mr. Sass using a 5-valve Tuba or a 4? The sound he has is quite fascinating, but seems to be a little too pedal-tone range to be done on a 4-valve. I may be wrong, but that's what I get for playing Euphonium too long (I'm a Tuba player by the way, I was asked to perform on Euphonium by a close friend for a concert).

  • props to the black man on the bass

  • That would be Mr. Jon Sass.

  • cool tune

  • YEAH, great !!:D

  • well, im 18 and can get close to about three of the sounds he made :-) haha i still have a chance? lol

    great playing.

  • I LOVE THIS!!! FANTASTIC :)

  • Looked clean to me...

  • oh thanks! Thats Tubaplaying how it can be!

    Great!

Here is so much crab uploaded, but this is great!

  • who is the lead tuba player?

  • It's Howard Johnson, I think.

  • I believe it's Jon Sass

  • Sometimes I get the two mixed up. Sry.

  • i should learn to play tuba!!! that's really impressive how it gets low. i would love to do it!

  • that was bad ass!

  • sin palabras.....verdaderamente espectacular....

  • everybody loves Jon Sass and heavy tuba!

  • yes a brotha doin it big on the tuba, my hero and another inspiration, right there with Mr.Howard Johnson

  • Yeah Jon!

  • Ahahahaha @ the end, tubaist going down to like 5 Hz.

    Very cool.

  • that is the PERFECT ensamble.

  • hes my personal favorite tuba player

  • wow!!!very inspiring.

  • jon sass you are a frikin' beast!! you make tuba cool

  • Well, very awesome, but I was expecting a nervous breakdown or something on stage. O well.....

  • john sass is pretty much the shiznit.

  • I'm an aspiring proffesional tubist and I do have to say hearing this made me want to expand my horizons beyond simply band and orchestral music.

  • Thats a first! Incredible!

  • Such a cool groove to it, awesome :)

  • They are too much fun- watch and enjoy

  • Yes je is Jon Sass

  • Incredible Jon Sass!

  • Hehe...Tuba Jazz...Very Nice...
