Tell your band director that the tuba/sousaphone was one of the instruments that was almost always used in original jazz bands it's true and in my opinion all jazz needs a little tuba
My director says that tubas do not belong under any circumstance in jazz. This is the most depressing thing I've ever heard her say. Some day.. Bang! Boom! I'll be there.
@GamerFloTV well I said rules 1 and 2 with the intention of trolling someone who would reply YOU FAGGOT THATS 4CHAN
but no, you actually replied and said the rules and what they meant, the 'rules' are nonexistant. they were made by some anon, not an admin or mod or anything.
and furthermore, the rules are for 4clams, not our glorious motherchan 7chan. you sure are some sort of freemason
Damn this brings back some memories... played electric bass AND tuba in jazz band, traded off with a friend of mine that played bass and trumpet for different songs.
This is just awesome. I first heard it done by the "Five Tubas" years ago. For those of you commenting on the baritones and euphoniums and e-flat horns...they are all part of the tuba family, So when they say tuba, it includes these horns. But most importantly...DON'T let this argument take anything away from the performance and skill of these musicians!! Does it really matter what instruments accompany great musicians?!!
click on more info and one of the tags is "euphoniums". That obviously means that there are euphoniums in the video. Gee, i wonder where they are - o wait! they're in the back!
dude, i played euphonium for 5 years and i am currently playing tuba - i know that tubas are much deeper. there's no way that those back ones are tubas. too small and too high (example - 1:03 and 2:08). pause it at 1:47 - u can definetly tell that those are euphoniums.
idk, im not an expert, but i know enough to tell tubas and euphoniums apart and those in the back are euphoniums. you can tell by the size and the pitch.
the tuba in a jazz band prejudice is the same as guys playing flute. when i played flute thats all i ever heard from people is that its a girl instument. its not really the same thing but close. i played flute for 4 years then swicthed to tuba cause we didnt have any tubas. been playing tuba for 3 years now and i love it.
Armstrong, Miles Davis, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Kenton and Don Ellis all used tuba. Joe Tarto played tuba in dozens of the best jazz bands in history. I played in high school, 2/3 of the time on original parts written for tuba. In university, they had that same tuba prejudice - until I auditioned with a Don Ellis piece. Difficult music and tuba part prominent. I was in and parts to play about 3/4 of the time. Not playing all the time meant I had lip left when it counted.
This makes me love my jazz band. Hearing about all these asses who won't let kids in the jazz band. Our instructor is coolest. Hip young genius-professor of a guy. We have TWO jazz tubas. Me and another girl. We play trombone parts.
Having tubas in jazz band are pretty sweet, but it rarely happens. I play tuba and trombone and I've been to competitions where they substitute tubas for bass bones and the timbre of the whole group changes a lot. A tuba in a jazz as a solo feature is awesome, but having it as part of the band as a whole just makes it sound weird, in my opinion.
lol in my jazz band someone asked me if i wished i played a real jazz instrument (i play tuba in the jazz band) and i laughed and said "But i do" and anyone who doesnt beleive that should watch this video!
man itss great to see pros breaking down walls i mean not many people think tubas make good swing instruments thats why i joined my university's jazz band on tuba because the director said tubas don't belong.
Tubas just make it more intersting, I'm thinking about joining jazz band, and i just switched from trombone to tuba, and our director said he wanted me to stay on trombone for when the jazz band came along, but I could go from Bb to Bb to F to Bb, but its really confusing because they're are to many Bb's, on my 3rd or 4th time picking up a tuba
It looks to me like he's using a 4+1 tuba. (4 pistons + 1 rotary) If you take a look at his tuba in the close shots, you can see a round brass area just above the first valve where his fingers are. Right near the end of the piece you can see his thumb and the linkage move.
Question, is Mr. Sass using a 5-valve Tuba or a 4? The sound he has is quite fascinating, but seems to be a little too pedal-tone range to be done on a 4-valve. I may be wrong, but that's what I get for playing Euphonium too long (I'm a Tuba player by the way, I was asked to perform on Euphonium by a close friend for a concert).
