@Noleasestoimbecil I think in eyecandy and easy of use, TI is ahead of HP of course. In fact I really feel like hp does not care anymore about the calculators, for TI is a very important part of their company.
I just tried both and HP seemed to me like a lot more professional (and difficult) to use, but probably it is just matter of being a 'fan' of a device you love to use.
@eried Functionally, the 50g is almost identical to the '93 vintage 48gx & '90 vintage 48sx. It runs on an ARM instead of Saturn processor. But the ARM is just running a Saturn hardware emulator in software. So it's about 3x faster than the 48gx, but eats batteries like they were going out of style. I change the batteries in my 48gx every few months. I've seen mailing lists posts from 50g owners complaining that the 49g+ & 50g couldn't make it through a single exam on a set of batteries.
@sbergman27 You're right about the emulation but not about the power. Four rechargable AAA last 4-6 months in my 50g (now 1 year with low usage), early 'faulty' roms can make the hp to use more battery
@sbergman27 Never tested that. First releases were very buggy, I remember my 49g+ menu constantly flickering and not using all the screen because the cpu-emulation.
50g current consumption seems to be about 3x the 48gx's for idle and busy processor. I guess 4+ yrs after the fact, it's a little late. But someone should tell the tester that the backup batteries in his cards are bad. Current consumption is zero ( < 0.005ma) with the unit off if the card batteries are good.
@sbergman27 Never tested that. First releases were very buggy, I remember my 49g+ menu constantly flickering and not using all the screen because the cpu-emulation.

Press and hold orange shift, then ENTER to quickly swap that mode. Press and release orange, then ENTER to convert only one expression to decimal without changing the calc mode
why do I get a fraction output on my hp50g? Just got it so I am not so familiar however say i enter 700/60 it answers a fraction of 35/3 . Okay thats equates to 11.6.
How do I set it up so I get the 11.6 and not the fraction? arghhhhh
Excellent video. If I ever need to open my HP-50g, now I know how to do it. I like the musical background, very apropos. I also liked the fast forward sections through less important material. good work man (or girl, as I don't know your gender).
I'n a Texas Instruments and a CASIO person for my graphing calculator needs. Even though the Hp-49 series is more powerful than the Ti-89 Titanium Hp calculators are very complicated and sometimes slow at easy problems.
my old boss had the HP48GX (i think it was HP48) and that thing was awesome! i liked the fact that it had a clock on it as well, nice feature. Plus is was so different than what people were used to in my school so punks didn't erase my games i had on it!
It's the way basic computational math is taught in the respective countries. RPN calculations are worked from the inside out. However, with american calculators or should I say TI calculators calculations are done in parts.. with RPN you compute and run one continous calculation not worrying if the calculator can understand your the string you just entered.
Nice video and nice calculator but the quality of the HP50g is not as good as it was in the HP48 series (the HP50g is a lot faster, though). Fortunately it seems that HP is back with the new HP35s.

Use the arrow key to move down to "105". Your calculator probably will show "Exact mode on".
Press F3 Softkey [CHK], it will change to "Approx. mode on"
Press F6 Softkey [OK]
