Lord, the unconsciousness of some people. Of what value to all/any of us is extreme negativity and derision towards others? In fact, the positivity exhibited here in the cold and with the bare start of an undertaking...THIS is what is of value in this world. And how such endeavors bring fruition - as evidenced in other of his videos. Refraining from name-calling, judgments, and insults require self-restraint for every one of us. Yet, we're far more appealing people as a result.
People leaving negative comments don't know what they are looking at in this video. I think this is awesome, you are really doing something admirable. Growing your own food, building your own greenhouse and experimenting. That takes innovation and guts!
seriously you should try. Its just a greenhouse. I wouldnt do a dome kit again anyways...maybe you can build a pyramid off of 2 meter high walls that are super thick...thats what I would do. That dome was just too damn much for what it is.
It might be soil issues. So many variables. Planting a $1 tree in a $10 hole is a good idea.
Dig a big hole and fill it full of good soil and compost and worms. Cover it up nice and mulch it deep (without crowding the crown of the rootstock at the base of the tree) and that will really help. TLC goes a long way.
Cover them up with sheets of plastic if you think they are too fragile for your climate. A $10 sheet of plastic does wonders.
I also removed the tropicals from the MN greenhouse..
Im mostly in NYC right now. Its the most surefire way to earn money to pay for my projects and travels. The transition is happening, but for now Im mosty in the New York.
I hope youve seen some more recent stuff from the project, I feel like that video is so dated already! Thanks!
So inspiring! I just discovered your videos yesterday and I just did a weekend marathon run of all your videos! Thanks for broadcasting your work, truly amazing. Oh and I'm a newbie raw foodist, been 100% for almost 2 months now, and I'm so stoked about my lifestyle change. Yay me! ^_^
Very cool!!! Keep exploring and keep tweaking it! Dont feel bad if 100% doesnt work all the time. Youre doing great already. Hopefully youll be growing allot of your own soon someday!
I've got a question in terms of heating. What if you ran some black garden hose (or other dark tube) a few times around the perimeter of the dome, then pumped water from your tub through the hose throughout the day. Solar pump maybe? If your tub has enough water in it, it may stay warm enough overnight to compensate for the propane a bit. I was pondering this and have no idea if it would work. Anybody tried it? Anybody have comments? Anyone want to try it and let me know how it works out?
for warm water needs :yes!make sure that you have no water left in hose loops over freezing nights and have a super insulated storage hot water tank!!..for heating :no!..to much of a temperature difference!! remember, you got to compensate for up to 80F!! solar operated heatpump would be the key!
agreed...circulating that warmer water through the ground would be so key. The ground stays pretty warm overall if things are tucked in and light can penetrate the dome (sometimes clouds or snowcover make this difficult) but the idea of the hot tub water running through is key. A person could just have the input-output tubes right in the back, so no drilling would have to be done at all. Then just bury the warm pipe.
I like your ideas, but have one thing to point out: your compost heap is pumping out tons of ethylene, and the propane heater is probably adding to it.
Ethylene induces a ripening response which causes flowers to drop, and fruit to ripen and rot early. I don't think your fruit trees are going to grow over that compost. Otherwise I really like your design!
Wow, you are not only beautiful, but smart! I love you, if I wasn't married, I would absolutely want to marry you!!!! Thanks for such informative videos! Inspiring!
wow I love this.....lucky you....I am going to build a greenhouse with a solar powered heater (I am in the high desert) for the winter.. by the end of this summer myself...I grow 70% of all my food in the summer, and fall...I was hoping to have a lemon tree inside of my greenhouse.
After trying noni in Bali last week...I dont think I would! Well...if the space is limited, I would have to give priority to white sapotes or loquats. The noni would stink up the joint!
Of course! Just a warm-up though...it will be much better in the spring once everything starts coming in. My trees arent looking so happy right now (lack of sunlight and warm weather) but things WILL improve...
Thanks for reminding me to keep it simple and pure, Anthony. I am inspired to eat more raw vegetables and green foods on a regular basis as opposed to on an occasional basis. You are on such a fabulous journey. Best of luck to you!
VERY doable...and economically feasible. This should be a key point in Obama's recovery plan.
Why NOT????? Could you imagine the buzz around the world if the US president started funding the massive planting of fruit trees and building of greenhouses? My word... Thanks for helping out Shasanni too :)
I know it looks VERY brown in there...but once I mulch it all and the leaves come in, the greenery will be in full effect. The golden light from above doesnt help matters either.
Brilliant! When you said solar panels, I was thinking about a big nice bank of car batteries lined up to provide heat during the night. Such a fun project! Good luck with all your efforts!

Love it. Thank you so much!!! I so, want to do what you've done with your permaculture. It looks like a huge undertaking. Thank you for posting.

It was way too cold for them so they had to be moved inside. Replaced with kiwis that were more temperate.

Anthony, nice atomium... :-)
But two advises:
Calcium is very common in Nature, so I don´t thing your plants will need extra calcium. And acidophillic plants can be killed if you add it.
Second, heat tends to go up, so it would be more efficient if you plab¡ce the heater on the lowest place.
izarob 3 years ago
I totally forgot to mention that I have a fan on the ceiling blowing the heat down...
and for the eggshells...Im sure its pretty minimal, and I have to compost them anyways...it would be a total waste to throw them in the trash.
THanks for the tip on the acidophillic plants...Ill be sure to see what qualifies besides blueberries and tomatoes. Big thanks..

Check out some community gardens in Philly...and maybe there are some folks that would be willing to invest in a communal dome??
If you dream it...its possible :) Sorry to sound cheesy, but its really true.

yes yes yes! is that a rocket stove you have? it kida looks like one!! such amazing work!
lcsalas 3 years ago
Ive got the wood stove submerged in the hot tub water, and then the white heater on top is attached to a propane tank.
Its 99% efficient though, and since it only pops on once the temp drops under 40F, its not used unless its really cold at night.
