Second viewing because this vid is awesome. I put in Primamist and Claritin for allergic reactions. Primamist may not be available anymore due to the high amount of pseudoephedrine in it, but Claritin works fine if you get in a patch of poison ivy/sumac, might even help along with a snake bite kit to stave off anaphylactic shock. It is a must-have if you need to GOOD and go through an area with a lot of snakes. I live in Texas so anti-histamines are needed for the flora and fauna.
This is awesome....i'm actually looking for some ideas of stuffs to put in my backpack..in case of emergency that i can grab it and run. Like your video
@packrat556 I've just started my bugout bag thanks to many videos like your own, but needs to gets a good camping bag. So far I only got a duffle bag wich isn't best for hiking around the brush. I figured you were the best person to tell me. Was considering kelthy redwing 3100 but was wanting adivice from you; bags being your expertise. Thanks for your time -8U1S6-
@BeneliM1014 Are you angry I just though practically? Just a question, why do you need to go through the trouble of having all this shit if a satellite phone guarentees your survival? Do you have something to proove? There is only on situation (that i can think of) this "survival" kit would serve any purpose. That would be if you were in the military and you could'nt call in people to come pick you up because you are in enemy territory or somthing. Otherwise, why make is so hard on yourself????
@dandotreillydot42058 I've spent the last 4 years of my life going outdoors on either hiking trips, hunting trips, canoe journeys or just general trips to get outdoors. Now, if there is one thing you can't be sure of, it is that the government/search services cannot be relied on, all the time. The reason a bag like this is constructed, is for the situation that by the off chance, emergency services are either overwhelmed with other people, or you are in-accessible. A bag like this saves lives.
@Blondie767 Im just asking, how can you be inaccessible? If you "accessed" were you are, then how can you be inaccessible. Also, if you dont trust the search teams then carry this entire 10 lb back pack, but ad the extra 12 oz and carry a satelite phone. Call first and see if you can be rescued. I guarentee you will be home in an hour. I could undertand this bag saving lives in a natural disaster where the services are overwhelmed and you are inaccessible, but in the wilderness i just can't see
@dandotreillydot42058 Well my definition of "inaccessible" would be due to snow, heavy rain or winds. Conditions that i am referring to would be more blizzard prone areas too. I always carry a satellite phone on my person, just in case of the event of an emergency, so by no means am I not acknowledging you point. Because satellite phones save lives too.
@dandotreillydot42058 a satellite phone would be great....if you've got at least $800 bones to buy it with. They can get near $1500 too. PackRat thanks for the video.
@mrmotownmadness89 If you were authentically worried about your survival you would pay 400 dollars on a lower end phone. This man has spent alot of money on his "survival kit" and could have easily baught a phone instead. You can argue with me but I think my life is worth 1500. If I was concerned about my survival, I would buy a satelite phone. But of course if you are to cheap to "survive" and would rather blow all your money away on this, then be my guest.
@dandotreillydot42058 I am agreeing with you...a satellite phone would be great. But only having a satellite phone as a survival kit (the point of this video) is beyond unprepared, it's stupid. Plus it is depending an awful lot on others to help you. There is nothing wrong with the items PackRat has shown us. Also, if I were "authentically" worried about my survival, I wouldn't buy a lower end phone that might take a shit. I would fork out the money for the real deal, a good brand. Cheers.
You should do a review on JUST the UTG backpack, it would be the only one on youtube and i would REALLLY appreciate it if you did. I am gonna buy one when i get paid, i just wanna see if its a good pack on the inside and stuff :D thanks packrat, your videos have given me so many ideas for my BoB. ( i already have it all, just need a good bag ) and when i get it ill throw a review of mine up :D
Great video. One comment about knives: Experience in the backcountry has taught me that smaller blades perform better. A good blade of 3.5 to 4 inches is all that's really needed. No need for a longer blade to split logs with in a survival situation. It dulls and wastes too many needed calories doing that. Any log under 5" diameter will burn without being split anyway. I've found that the RAT-3 Knife is about as close to ideal as I'm ever going to get for an all-around outdoor wilderness knife.
@westernhunter38 In your area a large knife may not be useful but in mine it is mandatory. so i guess it all boils down to where you are and the type of environment you will survive in.
have you or anyone else watching/reading this looked into the Multicam camouflage pattern? It is the closest thing to the active camouflage technology from the Metal Gear Solid 4 video game. I wont buy any kind of SHTF gear unless it's in multicam. It's way better than woodland camo at blending with your surroundings. It's pretty expensive compared to other patterns but it is way way way cool.
Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but take chapstick lip balm and rub on the zippers to make them slide better. Works like a charm on my boat canvas and scuba diving bags.
Hey Packrat, thanks for your great vids... I'm working my way through all of them.
Quick question if you get a moment.. I'm trying to find the capacity of the UTG backpack and having trouble finding the number. I'm comparing it to the Maxpedition Vulture II... your thoughts? Thanks much!
love your video's, i watch them over and over. a friend and myself are planning a backpacking trip this spring, we are gonna spend 3-5 days outdoors. your video's are so helpful, thanks for having good info per item. some video's just rush thru the item's and not tell what their for. thanks again and keep the video's coming

Hey, I had a quick question and would like your advice since you discussed types of backpacks. I'm a small woman, but since high school I have been accustomed to carrying 25-40 lbs of books on my back. (School officials said lockers were for drugs.) What type of backpack would be best for an emergency situation to get out of the city and for a short woman? I'd like one that has space for water with kidney and chest straps for support. Thanks!
You should watch my 3 part video series on the 5 C's of survival...a new way of thinking about the basic survival needs broken down into some very simple concepts.
Hey i have a FOX tatical gear ACU medium transport pach its A.L.I.C.E capabel and 18"x10"x10" and its combat spec built and mission ready (says the tag and it holds up preety well)
Yo PackRat Buy a Maxpedition Falcon 2 it has good quality strong ykk zippers en alot of Molle atachments and is pretty big and its have a alot of good organizers pockets.
@ArcAng3L4 The closer the water is to your body temp the better. Room temp water, for instance will absorb into your digestive system faster than ice water.
I assume by your comment that by "bad design" you mean that you prefer your water cold. If I am correct, try drinking room temp water. Once you get used to it, it's very refreshing and doesn't feel like you have a sandbag in your stomach after a good gulp.
Great video. Great pack. My problem has been security where I park in a Metro parking garage all week. My car has an open hatchback area so no place to hide a BOB....but since it's black carpet, I can tuck a black pack in the very back..then cover flat with a black fleece blanket..and it's hardly visible even if you look directly into the windows. Great info!! Many things I'd not thought of for my bag!
I just picked up this same bag at a gun show today for $35 in coyote/tan brand new. I wanted OD, but the tan was all the dealer had left. For that price, I can't complain. It's one hell of a bag.
For interested parties, it's the UTG Combat Featured Load Carrying Web Pack, and it's available at several websites for around $65. Leapers also makes one just like it.
I'm wondering, you talked about a good knife for the situation, I'm going on an antelope hunt in the backwoods of Colorado next week, would the Buck 119 Special be a good knife for there? Thanks!
I feel like Gerber and Leathermen tools are basically of equal quality, however they suffer from the same kind of arguments as PC vs. MAC. They're both great, but I just prefer the Leathermen for some reason that I can't really put my finger on. My dad bought a Super tool when they first came out and used it at work. Then when it got old he gave it to me. I still have it and I still use it when I'm camping. It's 10 years older than me and I can vote.
LED flashlight brighter than penlight or maglight with incandesent bulb and longer battery life. Worth carrying a spare flashlight. You can use a rock to sharpen your knife. Can opener not needed some cans are quick open. Only a pocket knife needed for opening pouches mini scissors, combat knife and multi tool are heavy. 2 Bic lighters lighter than fire starter and matches.GI canteen makes water taste bad use a stainless water bottle or Nalgeen bottle. What state you from I am from Pa.
The reason the CFP-90 is less compart mentalized is becasue it was designed specifically for cold weather (not only for cold but it was designed to work in the cold better than other packs) so the large compartment is for things like coats, extra longundrwar, extra socks and other cold weather items. The whole purpose for the patrol pack on the CFP was to make the pack more compartmentalized.
hey, very nice vid! I def. learned some useful survival tips. I just wanted to ask though... what's up w/ the sharpie? I watched all 5 parts and you never went back and explained it.
For all you Condor lovers let me tell you not to buy their crap! I was given 1 of every bag they make and they are terrible!! I would rather sport a Fox outdoors product or bug out gear! Leave Condor to the Air softer players!
Your canteen cover looks like the old Alice-type. You might like the MOLLE canteen/survival pouch and it's more compatible with your attachment system. Also, the Maxpedition M4 is very nice and there are less expensive versions of that as well. I use one as a survival pouch.
agree with a lot of what you have and am interested in where you get some of your stuff. - side note i laugh at some of the below comments, lord help em if they dont take your suggestions instead of mocking them- one thing concerns me. i intend to have my pack carry most/all you suggested but what about the emergency now siutations when you need water and dry food to sustain you for a period of time if you are in an area without local water or gaming? i am out of room email me at gmail
Has basic carpenters tools crossed you mind on building a log home if SHTF and we were in a development where living out side of our homes my be for several months if not more? Like a small file to keep axes sharp knives relatively sharp.I would checkout the Youtube video "alone in the wilderness" to get an understanding for what i am speaking of.
The quarters are for if he ever does get lost or stranded and he finds like a pay phone or something it would be ashamed if he didn't have those quarters.
like ur videos have watches quite a few of them . i am 56 yr ols stroke survivor in nopva scotia. i made 1st aid kit/survival kit carry in backpack. i go in woods alot just dont travel as far nor as fast as i used to. thx alot. karen. do u know where to buy mini pkg antibiotic ointment.....2 pkg tylenol etc? ps i practice my flint/steel by lghtting tinder in kitchen sink.
I don't know if you know this, but for those who don't know: Maglites have a spare lightbulb in the endcap behind the spring mechanism. So maybe no need to have a total of 3 extra bulbs?
Just wanted to give you my honest opinion. This is a good video but you talk waayy to much about nonsense before you get into the reason I watched your video.
Nice vids. But i was wondering how much the backpack and the content costs. And where you get all the money for it. Well I am just a 14 years old European kid who can't get all that stuff.
Here are a few suggestions. I carry one pair of wool socks and one pair of Gortex Waterproof socks, since our feet have to carry us. Your first aid kit might include: Moleskin, Oil of Oregano, kaopectate, Sam Splint, Vasoline, Vicks Vaporub, Oscillococcinum Flu Remedy.
You and I seem to have alot in commen w/our love of packs and style of gear choices and such. Also I have a very simular version of your pack only mine doesn't have the side pockets. I love it. Same problem with the zippers but rather have that then a weak bag.
great videos man, very helpful. just wondering how big the backpack looked on someone, because i like the pack i just don't want to buy it if it looks to big, thanks
Hey Guys this is pack rat's biggest fan just letting you know that the back pack is the UTG pvc-p688r. Google that phrase and look at shopping results if you want to buy the backpack. Pack rat 557 OUT!!!
@mufcRULE2000 he gives alot of information which is helpful for people who actually want to survive what they are in, you wouldnt probably make it to far because you have no patience, good luck
What os a BOB for? Is the world coming to an end and I haven't been told? I thought that all of the hopeless gave up after y2k. (man there was some good prices on generators in 2000-2001) If the world does end what is a BOB going to do?

You should consider adding a US GI canteen stove that fits on the canteen cup in the cover.

snowboarderdude96 1 year ago

I don't know if you know this, but for those who don't know: Maglites have a spare lightbulb in the endcap behind the spring mechanism. So maybe no need to have a total of 3 extra bulbs?

Here are a few suggestions. I carry one pair of wool socks and one pair of Gortex Waterproof socks, since our feet have to carry us. Your first aid kit might include: Moleskin, Oil of Oregano, kaopectate, Sam Splint, Vasoline, Vicks Vaporub, Oscillococcinum Flu Remedy.

What os a BOB for? Is the world coming to an end and I haven't been told? I thought that all of the hopeless gave up after y2k. (man there was some good prices on generators in 2000-2001) If the world does end what is a BOB going to do?
