Don't go there poitty1978, a REAL tackle is when you use your arms. Most of the "big hits" in league tackles these days are shoulder charges. Gotta use your arms to be a tackle, everything else is a dog shot.
I'm not saying this guy is wrong, but personally I've always targeted the lower stomach/waist area. Gives that extra solid to take down and more room for any error.
Yeah, I realized I couldn't bring guys down even with a full wrap and cheek-to-cheek positioning because I didn't have the forward drive. Getting low but aiming a little more upwards on his body made tackling easier. Though I think practicing the athletic skills I need for tackling in wrestling will help a ton
@KushDubstep American Football... You guys have more pads than sense.. and im pretty sure any decent player could easily outmatch you on a rugby field..
oh it hardly work if ur a fullback coz de opposition runner would jus turn on the gas and burn ur azz! when you tackle a fullback make sure to wrap his arms to avoid offloads.
sorry, i'm 15, and even i can see that is a very weak passive technique. you want to position your body closer to his by place your body inbetween theirs (or roughly). county level rugby pays off.
remember shoulder and feet positions when you make contact, i know he says aim for legs, but you tbh as long as you are making a strong firm hit below the neck its ok because if the man doesnt go down , hold on, support will be there to take the man out. But always try for legs cause then they cant do shit
@rynjahninjah Starts with your eyes bro - Target the spot you wanna hit with your eyes and don't detract. If you follow a runners waist and groin. I don't teach to go low, I teach to go at the waist and stomach, why tackle a person in the hardest parts of the body and you can also tie up the ball. Next is the leg drive. Drive through them and force them backwards, that means their forwards have to retreat to come through the gate to get the ball (simple). Some of these techniques are antiquated
@tainui63 yeah completely true, another tip my coach gave was if you have the chance after you tackle the opponent quickly get up and take the ball (if there are no defenders going in for the ruck) cause once he tries to hold on then its a penalty, if he doesnt you have a quick turnover. i think the all blacks do this sometimes
ok so a lot of people are saying try running into them hard and fast and hit with the shoulder before they gain momentum. what if youre like fullback and the opposition is running towards you at full speed and full momentum how would you tackle him?? thanks
i play american football right now. i am pretty tough. does anyone think that if i get my conditioning and stamina up enough that i can play rugby later on out of high school?
@leodoggy97 Start playing asap, its such a quality sport :) u dont need conditioning and stamina really, work on them whilst you play because knowing how to play if half the advantage of rugby. ive seen a group of small and unfit people beat a group of massive strong and fast people because they knew where to go and what to do.
its not enough to just wrap your arms around someone's legs, you need a firm shoulder hit on the legs then ideally to drive on with your own legs to try and put them on the ground.
hmm, i play bantam rugby for Stouffville Spartans, and i just dont have the will to tackle, and when i try to, i usally get a knee in the face, or the just stiff arm me out of the wayy. My friend who is the sam size, started as a back, but the coach made him hooker cuz he was so good at tackling. Is it that im afraid to tackle? or am i doing it wrong? I REALLY want to get better at tackling and be really good at it, can someone help me plz!!!!!
@InfinityArch People who have trouble tackling often let the player run into them, so try running onto them and smashing them before they can get momentum maybe? I guess it's all about having the will to do it, if you get a broken nose it'll heal in a few weeks, but if you get that broken nose smashing someone into touch to stop them scoring, your team mates will remember it forever! Good luck man!
@InfinityArch practice hitting tackle bags, then move it up to a man holding a rucking shield. If you don't want a knee in the face, there's no problem tackling slightly higher above the waist. Just remember that the harder you go in the less likely you are to get hurt, that may sound strange but often when i am least "up for it" is when i tend to pick up knocks and injuries. Remeber to tackle first with your shoulder, putting your full body weight behind it, instead of using your arms first.
lol i do rugby in school and i av a every Wednesday and my teacher said 'GET THEM DOWN AND MAKE SURE THEY DONT GET BACK UP but dont play dirty' i mean WTF ??????????
even i could do a better tackle than that with a bouncy ball at school
