Hey jared, i just bought a pearl vision vsx with birch and basswood shells, do you think it is a good drum kit that will sound similar to yours or should i trade mine in for something else? thank you!!!
@XthrownX unfortunatley there is no way it will sound exactly like this kit....not only does Jared play a $5,000 drum kit but also has all of his drum individually miced and equed by a professional sound engineer that being said the pearl vision is a great set....i do suggest maybe getting the vml version which is all maple and much better than birch and basswood then simply put evans coated g2s on the toms each with an aquarian studio ring
@XthrownX then for the resonant side of the toms i suggest either a clear g1 or an ebony ambassador from remo (they are both 1 ply reso heads but the remo one is black and will give your kit a very unique look) for snare i suggest Evans hd dry with some moon gel over an evans hazy 300 you should also upgrade your snare wire to a pure sound snare.for base drum an evans Emad 2 for batter side and evans emad reso for resonant side.do all that (like i did) and you will have one amazing sounding kit
Before and afters would have been nice. I noticed your bass reso head has wrinkles. I found that tuning my bass drum heads just tight enough to get rid of the wrinkles while pressing in the middle of the head gave me the lowest pitch possible without sacrificing tone. Also the Evans Emad bass drum heads are made to get that thump right out of the box. I use the EQ pad as well. The first time I tuned my bass, it was perfect. I had never even tuned a bass before.
@tivatboys yh pretty much, but i got a TAMA imperialstar 5 piece with hardware and Sabian sbr cymbals and remo heads with almost 1000EURO... i think it's a pretty good price :P
Ive tried tons of times to tune my drums and i cant get a good sound. how would i know if its just a problem with the drum its self? Or if im doing something wrong when tuning? Please help me!!!!! Haha
Jared, for a good sounding snare drum with no overtones, would your recomend the drum gum or do the rings also do a good job? I need your opinion. Thank you. =)
I was about to vituperate you for telling the young folks to put tape on their drums. Luckily you told them not to use it to compensate poor tuning. I'm afraid they will do exactly that anyways...
If people are so particular about the snare buzz they wish to rid of it all together I suggest looking into different snare wires, Puresound Equalizer snare wires are designed to eliminate snare buzz.
I like using weather stripping/camper foam. Its called different names but its what you put around air conditioners, door/window seams. I cut it into 2 inch pieces and place it where its needed. The only downside is that its permanently stuck to the drum head. I like a dead sound but I buy two of every head just in case I don't want the dead sound.
Another way to dampen the snare drum a little bit is to take one of those big plastic rings that dampen a drum a lot and simply cut it into varying sizes. The smaller sizes in particular are nice because the vibrations of the head will cause it to pop up, giving the snare a little life before silencing it. The snare is the only thing I will ever muffle (and most of the time I don't), because if you have a high end kit, and tune it to the sweet spot, then the resonance will just add to the mix!
Thanks for the tips Jared! i saw your other video a few weeks ago on bass drum tuning and muffling, so i ordered the same set of heads you have and an eq pad and it sounds AMAZING on my bass drum!!!!
Another method I use sometimes, more on my bass and floor toms, is to cut a small strip of fabric and lay it across the diameter of the drum between the reso head and the shell.
why do u do that to ur bass drum jared? if you tuned properly, you wouldnt need to do that. for god's sake, u have a DW KIT. and no im not saying ur bass drum sounds bad in ur recordings, all im saying is that if you actually didnt use TWO bedsheets, an eq pillow and and eq patch, you would have a better sound with actual BASS. i have a cheapo Pearl export kit from the 90's, and all i use to muffle is a pillow on the bottom of my drum.
@joshuag94 i kinda agree with you, i also just use one pillow in my pearl forum bass drum that i duct taped down so it would stay against the batter head without touching the resonant head. honestly muffling for bass drums for me is so i can get it to feel right when hit, like without muffling it would vibrate so much u cant even get a solid feeling hit
@ChiefBada I don't hink tape etc does effect much but they sell dampeners for cymbals. I can't put a link but search ''cymbal dampener'' on google or something. They are really ugly though...
I used the toilet paper(tissues) mufflin method, they are super muffled and I love it, I used clear tape and I stick em inside the drum so it doesnt look ugly :)
Awesome- very informative, especially when you need a starting point on how to muffle/dampen drums properly. Really helpful. FYI I talk to my snare drum sometimes too :).
Hey Jared :) Im loving your videos, you have great info about drumming and i love your content :) i have a question. Would you be able to make a video whenever you can about how to practice Triple_ Strokes? I watched your doubles video, and i have been practicing for about 2 months on them, and i feel confident with them now. i was just wondering how to go about practicing the triple stroke roll. I cant seem to find out how on the web. So i thought i would ask you as your videos are very helpful

@DanGordon93 The process to learn triple strokes is the same process you went through to learn your doubles. Start slow and wrist the strokes out, and when you get to higher tempos you can use the rebound of the stick to get three even strokes. Triple strokes are a bit of a pain to learn at first, because the technique of your stroke has to be spot on to get three even strokes; but just like doubles and singles, practice makes perfect.
@shadowseal22 Ah, ok then mate. Thanks for giving me some info about how to do them! i appreciate it :) I would still love a video from jared though. Just to see it in person, and from a great drummer :)
