For the first two days in Minecraft, I could not find coal for the life of me. I literally found seventeen iron before I found coal. Good thing I replanted trees, or the Taiga Biome I spawned in would have quickly become a snow-covered plain. Oh, and I spawned next to an above-ground lava pool.

Not many people know but by smelting wood you get charcoal which in combination with a stick can make a light, if coal is in short supply use this method its faster then spending the first day being raped by zombies hope this helps :D

You can make charcoal. You put refined wood as a substitute of coal in the furnace then put the regular wood on top :D it can be substituted as coal :P
