all tube one channel amp. the lead channel is actually a stomp box distortion type of wiring. the only time you get true tube overdrive on this amp is to crank the clean channel. distortion is too well behaved you'll notice as soon as you switch channels, still sounds good when it works though. Kinda along the lines of a hopped up ds-1 pedal.
if you want.. like a classic hendrix or mayer kinda sound... what is needed? im going for some bluesy kind of gear, both guitar and amp. im thinking about maybe a Fender Road Worn 60 Strat 3 Color Sunburst? something like that... any suggestions? ;) thx.
@TheJuliusJT - Don't bother with new, Mexican-made Hot Rod Dlx's. Too-problematic. Get an older, US-made one (Check the backplate to be sure it's a US one - If it needs a retube, use the better, Czech-made tubes). For Hendrixy/Mayer, I suggest a Throbak Fuzz Haze (I seriously-use it more than my AM NKT Sunface - Plus, the pre-gain switch turns the FH into a sweet-sounding, slightly-hairy overdrive - I use that setting A LOT). Find a older, used US-made Strat (3 single-coils) and you're there.
Very misleading heading to this video!! This is not a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe VM (there isn't one) it's a Fender Deluxe VM - totally different amplifier!!
Am I missing something? He breaks up clean with single coils, but I've read reviews of people using high output humbuckers who keep it clean all the way up to 10
I had the opportunity to see this amp demo'd at the Namm 2009 by the gentlemen in the video. Enjoy what it did so much I now own one. Great compliment to my DR and Tweed BD. I'm admittedly a Fender / G&L diehard. though so this probably isn't a fair review. to some, though I own EB, Epi, Gibson, Taylor brands as well.
I don't get it...on alot of reviews it says that the clean channel stays clean almost all the way...here he says and demonstrates how it breaks up nicely...

nah, trust me any of the old black face fenders-such as the deluxe reverb, sound really different from these vintage modified amps

I played this thing at GC and their POP (price tag sign) called it a Hot Rod Deluxe Vintage Modified. I found it odd. Who knows.
