@Arabhacks I can quite believe it. As you can probably see from the news, it's not quite the same over here! Any chance we could have some of your police?
The whole idea of opening this up to scooters and the like is to also open up funding.
Remember that with funding comes proper services, and things like drains get attended to.
And, the reason for allowing motor bikes is that with something that narrow it is with ease that lanes for bicycles and foot traffic can be provided for.
Perhaps a limit of the size of the scooter or motor bike is in order.
In the USA this is done on a limited basis but it is new, give it a while to see how it works.
@Arabhacks I respect your thoughts and opinion, but I am afraid I am still not convinced it is a good idea. I can't believe people would stick to speed limits. We are not disciplined enough, otherwise we would not need speed cameras. The thought of the noise and fumes from mopeds/motorbikes going through some of the few 'quiet' places in the Peak District, like Water-Cum-Jolly, is not appealing. I suspect it would also only be a mayter of time before an accident too. The A6 is parallel.
The smart thing to do would be to open the entire path to motorcycles.
Although a normal sized car could use this it would only be a one way option.
Although the idea of having bicycles on the path may sound appealing, the fact of the matter is that in order to make a practical use of this it would need to be the more modern and quicker motorized bike.
Set the speed limit to something reasonable and have scooters as well.
@Arabhacks Sorry, but I have to disagree. This is the countryside, there are already plenty of roads in Derbyshire for motorcyclist to explore. Why can't people just enjoy a walk or bike ride without the noise and polution from a motorised vehicle be that a small car or motorbike?
What would you do if you fell down a deep drain and broke your leg?
To walk through old tunnels is just asking for trouble.
At Standedge there are 4 tunnels 3 railway and 1 canal.
To get relief to train crews in the double tack tunnel, we drove through a single line bore, and got into the mainline tunnel by walking through a small communication tunnel, over the canal tunnel on old sleepers to effect releif.
You are asking for it doing what you do, typical silly trainspotter.
Ewsiscrap, well aren't you just a ray of sunshine.
I can't stand being in the same room with people like you. You're full of fear, spreading your negativity everywhere.
A study at the University of Ohio showed that unfit and fat people are more fearful than fit people. Graduate students played scary sounds and asked people to press a button when it seemed the sound was very close. Fat people pressed the button soonest.
Yes it is. It's called Head Stone Tunnel and open out onto the famous Mosal Head Viaduct. The Peak PArk seem to be looking to open all the tunnels for cylcists which will probably mean there is no chance of re-opening the route again, which was indeed part of the Midland Mainline between Manchester and Derby and onward to London St Pancras. Its a shame really as it is the most direct route to Manchester from Derby. It would probably be even faster than the car between the two cities too!
Thanks for the reply! I believe I travelled through it when I was very young behind a steam loco. It would cost a huge amount to re-open would it not? And Central Station has lost all its direct bridge links in M'cr now. How I would love to cycle through those tunnels! There's an idea for next summer with the kids!! Thanks.
I understand.
I am in Texas, and here you follow the law, or else!
Run from the police? if you get the taser, consider yourself lucky!
Look up Texas police on you tube for examples!

@railsites Really! Wow. I can't believe it was two years ago! Well you can walk through then now as they have been opened up to the public.

I have worked engineers trains in nearly all of West YorkshireTunnels over the years.
Along the length of any tunnels there are drains in the middle.some of these drains were very deep.
Many of the train crews have been injured by falling down drains which did not have covers over them.
If I saw one open drain in a tunnel I would not go into it.
One cover off then all the drain cover will be off.
THe was my own Health and Safety risk assessment.

Is this tunnel located along the route of what used to be the main line between Manchester Central Station and Derby?

So do I. But it'll require a few pennies and lot of will power! Glad you enjoyed the video.

I have found memories walking this section back in the 1970's, some time between 77-79 in knee deep snow. Cheers.

Should be a railway there I think. :)

They should open those tunnels for the public.

I quite agree. Although my preference would be public access via a railway carriage ;-)

Thanks so much for putting this video up. I really wanted to see what it was like inside and now I have the chance.
