Hello everyone, I fucking hate to do this, but I am.
I made a music video for a NMH song (FIND IT ON MY CHANNEL) and I'm really proud of it. I absolutely adore the song "in the aeroplane over the sea" and it represents a considerable positive segment of my life, and it would mean a lot to me if I could get it to 1000 views. If you think I'm being a twat, reply and tell me, whatever. But if you don't mind, go watch it and like this comment so more people watch it! Thank you! LONG LIVE NMH
You people are all on dope. Everyone. This version is terrible. The Paris Sister's version cannot be touched. Hotel Milk singer: even you know it's true.
Jeff Mangum has the kind of voice John Lennon had, just raw pure energy in whichever direction he'd take it. Brilliant and touching. It's impossible not to love the man.
I don't even listen to these guys, but I really don't see how people are saying he can't sing. The dudes voice is really interesting and unconventional which makes for somewhat of a journey of a listen even though it's a pretty short song.
Love the song, but I think there should be a longer pause in the end. The voice sets a painful longing/ mood. Why say thank you and talk and deflate the moment so soon. AMAZING voice! Thanks!
People often mistake Jeff's style for an inability to sing. He is an extremely gifted and accomplishes singer....this was his style...there is a difference!
I adored his voice then and I always will....he can deliver a song with an earnestness and emotion that most singers can only dream of!
It's just the texture of his voice. Personally, I love it, but for some reason people confuse different voice colour with not singing properly.
Even so, I couldn't care less whether or not a singer is hitting the note exactly if it's done with genuine emotion. Daniel Johnston and Julian Koster have awesome vocals, simply because of the rawness they exude.
Agreed 100%. Have these naysayers ever heard of Tom Waits? One of the most influential musicians of the last thirty years, but I am sure he's not going to be performing Wagner soon. What about R.I.P. to the great Willy DeVille? An incredible emotional performer but that if anything makes him BETTER than a pure technical singer.
@jwattie I always saw it as he really has to push his voice and almost fight with it to stay in key. His determination and obsession is wnat makes him an artist and not just a singer. That's what's moved me about him.
@jwattie I love nmh and I love his style but its a massive stretch to say he's a gifted and accomplished singer lol. He's an awful vocalist. pitchy, doesn't breath properly, its just that it doesn't matter. He's not trying to be a singer.
@tsabaola I don't think his vocals are poor. To judge this type of artist by some x factor/singing coach type standard of singing is insulting to his art. This is a completely different genre to the mainstream. Was Kurt Cobain a bad vocalist? No because what he was doing wasn't about some polished, well presented performance which people chewed up and shat out, it was about raw emotion and evoked an emotional response as does Mr Mangum with his vocal style. To call him poor is ignorant and rude.
Jeff's voice crack at 0:53 is the most heavenly voice crack of anyone ever.

Whenever you kiss me
And when I'm away from you
I love how you miss me
I love the way your kiss is always heavenly
But darling, most of all
I love how you love me
