  • Great video now I know how to fieldstrip mine, thanks

  • Thanks, this helped me take mine apart. Kudos!

  • model 69 must be a weird gun ;D

  • Also, when removing the slide assembly, I lifted the back of the slide up at the back (off the guide rail) before moving it forward. This pulled the barrel off the guide rod, and as the slide was moved forward the spring tension would reduce so the rod didn't fly away.

  • I used to have one of these in the late 70's, I still regret that I had to sell it. The only issue I had with it was the checkered grips which I found uncomfortable after a while (was I maybe gripping too tight? I dunno) but I just shaped a couple of pieces of plywood to fit instead.

A question though - I don't recall having to remove the barrel bushing - did S&W alter the design or is my memory playing tricks?

  • Mens Room FTW!

  • @MarshalZhukov do you know if you can shoot +P ammo through this? thanks

  • @sasquatch4liffee I wouldn't think there would be a problem with this. I never shot any out of mine, but you might consult google or some forums and see what other people have to say.

  • Very nice looking gun. I am thinking of buying one I saw at our local gunshop. Nice video.

  • 14 round mags. my dad used to have one of these. awesome gun

  • Watched this at work to clean up a friends same gun. Thank you for the help. He had the thing for years and never took it and cleaned it.

  • You don't even know how many rounds your piece has?!? wow..

  • @IceTTom It was used when I bought it. So who knows. It's a very functional firearm though.

  • @MarshalZhukov the clip holds 15 rounds By the way you made a good buy I have the same model and its the best pistol I have owned

  • I got the 39-2

  • The Smith and Wesson Model 59 was Starsky's gun on the television show Starsky and Hutch.

  • Love my 59. I bought it in the late 80's for a good price as a police trade in and have several thousand rounds through it. Great "truck/car" gun if that kind of thing is legal in your state.

  • I am thinking about getting a S&W 5944 but the only thing I'm worried about is that it is DAO. Is there anyway of converting it to DA/SA?

  • @Jrhoney If it's DAO, then there might not be a way. I'm not familiar with that model, so I can't be of much help there.

  • I have a model 59 that has been passed down from my grandpa to my dad and my dad to me. the 59 is my favorite gun.

  • Very good I just bought one and this video helped me 100%

  • Nirvana 'All apologies' playing in the background. Mans got good taste in music and a nice piece.

  • This looks exactly like my 39-2

  • my model 59 just recently broke. I was shooting and the gun jammed after looking at it closer I found out that part of the muzzle ramp had broken off. Any ideas on where to buy a new barrel ?

  • @3939steve Hard to say. Might check with Numrich. Go to gunpartscorp . com and click the "S" on the left to search by manufacture. Find Smith &Wesson and scroll down to "59". There are used barrels there for about $60. Hopefully one of them would be what you might need.

  • S&W made agin this gun

    ?

  • @druisteen1 S&W made the 9mm auto in the model 39, and 59. Model 52 was in .38 spl, and the model 952 was in 9mm with a 6" barrel. The 39 and 59 are the most popular. The 39 was one of the first double action pistols on the American market made by Americans in the mid 50s. It was the predecessor of the 59, which had a hi-cap mag, opposed to the single stack of the 39. The 39, and 59 revolutionized law enforcement, supplying double action pistols for duty use.

  • Beautiful gun. I like the smith and wesson pistols.

  • Awesome video, beautiful gun and nice music (Y) *****

What would be the retail price on one of those old S&W's ?

  • @stealthyshooter Hard to say. Saw one at a gun show for $425. What someone is willing to pay really. I think there are newer models than this though too. I'd go to gunbroker and get an idea that way.

  • Nice. I might have to look for one of those. My Marlin 9mm Camp Carbine uses the same magazines.

  • I just bought that exact same pistol and took it to the range. I shot about a hundred rounds and it jammed up on me about 5 times. Are these things known for that? I'm thinking it's a bad clip but don't know much about pistols

  • Hard to say. Could be a weak mag spring,or recoil spring. Might be worth trying to find a new mag, or else trying different ammo. What kind of ammo are you shooting out of it? Feed ramp might need a little bit if polishing too.

  • It's a used pistol and so is the clip so I was leaning towards a bad clip. I'll take a look at the feed ramp though too. It's Remmington 9mm ammo. I have a new clip on order so I'll throw that in and see what that does. Thanks man I appreciate it

  • @Merlin63b It shouldn't be jamming like that. I'm thinking bad magazine, or recoil spring for the two common causes. Wolff springs will have recoil spring for that or S&W directly. Magazines you can get from S&W's website or Mec-Gar. Less common causes are the extractor or ejector. A gunsmith will be able to tell you that better. That model 59 is one of the best semi-autos around.

  • Nifty piece! I like these Smith and Wessons but I don't know a whole lot about them. They were always those S&W autos that look a bit like 1911s but aren't actually 1911s at all.

  • i have this exact same model

  • hey i field stripped this gun and was wondering if anyone else had a problem of when you rack the slide the barrel itself seems to be moving back and forth with the slide to a certain degree?

  • A little bit of wiggling back and forth is ok, but more than that decreases accuracy

  • i miss the time when S&W made this gun

  • Well, I think it is more different than similar. A typical 1911 is single action only. This S&W is DA hi-cap. There are hi-cap 1911s, but easier to hi-cap a 9mm than a .45. Only similarity disassembling is removing the slide stop. Recoil spring is removed beneath barrel, and barrel is pulled out to rear of slide. Typical 1911 recoil and barrel removal is different. Barrel slides out through front of slide after removing barrel bushing and recoil spring. What characteristics were you referencing?

  • Even it looks kinda like the Colt 1911, I like this design more, especially the Model 5904 is a beautiful handgun.

    Thanks for this video.

  • Super helpfull vid, Thanks!

Out of curiosity, what song is that, starting at 6:38?

    Thanks!

  • Linkin Park, New Divide. They played that song in the second Transformers movie. I'm not a fan of Linkin Park at all, but this song isn't too bad. I can handle it, but only because I liked the movie :)

  • Rotating Pin-Block Safety....I like them alot more than a trigger-block safety.

  • Yea, it seems to be a pretty sound design IMO. It is nice and smooth. And unlike the P38, it doesn't hold the trigger back when the slide is closed then the safety is engaged.

  • 14 round mag

  • can i buy this one on the internet? because i have a berreta but somehow its impossible for me to find thid one thanks

  • good review, god music playing in the background also. you mentioned that it would be a good concealed carry weapon. whats the weight on the gun?

  • Good question. I had to search for the scale, but it read 1lb15oz with mag in the gun, but empty. So thats a dry weight, no ammo. Didn't have any 9mm handy. My 9mm Makarov weighed 1lb12oz fully loaded, and my CZ82 weighed 1lb10oz mag in with no ammo. I guess tomorrow I will weigh them all LOL.

  • @MarshalZhukov i have the exact same gun and i love it but every now and then the slide locks back as if it was out of ammo but there is still a bullet in the chamber. any suggestions?

  • @ clcochoy If there is an empty case still in the chamber somehow after you shoot it, then it is an extractor issue. But if the round extracts, and the slide locks back on a mag that still has rounds in it, then it sounds like you could have an issue with a weak spring on your slide hold open latch. The recoil jolts it up and it happens to catch the slide as it's coming forward.

  • I have carried it a couple times. It wouldn't be bad if thats all someone had. But everyone is different too with different body styles, etc. It isn't very difficult for me to conceal it. The model 39 I think would be better since its only a single stack mag.

  • KISW..........LOL =]

    5-stars for a classic S&W Model 59!!!

Do you know if the 39 has the same take down with barrel bushing?

  • I believe it is identical. Perhaps someone with a model 39 S&W can verify, but I took my buddy's apart who has the model 39 and I think it is the same.

  • nice pistol i always like the 59,,but not aluminum and thats what the side is made of if i remember right.

  • It is a good shooting pistol, no complaints there. But, the frame is an aluminum alloy of some sort. Steel on alloy isn't always the best, but if it would have not performed during testing when it was initially produced, then I'm sure S&W would have made a metal frame for it.
