09:02.That´s how the rich want the poor to be! Humble and bowing so they can overlook them. Still so today. Funny what differences money makes between people. Dream your romantic dreams, but remember back then we were the bowing class with bended backs not the ones that were bowed to.

though kate beckinsale makes a great emma, i have to admit that the overall atmosphere of this adaptation is somewhat gloomy and depressing. its definitely not the funny and lighthearted piece that i've imagined it to be when i read the book. many of the characters are hilarious in the book and austen's usual dealings in poking fun of society are always amusing. but this version failed on that aspect. i think the 2009 version captured the easy going and uplifting tone much better than this one.
@TorynMarch back then if a girl didn't marry then she wouldn't have a chance of a decent living when her father died. women couldnt earn money or inherit :(
@thicketwings05 you are wrong. legally women could both inherit and earn money.
emma in particular is rich and will inherit that is why she has no problem with not marrying.
problem with other austen heroines is that they are relatively poor to begin with (mp, p, na). or that ppl have willed (s&s) or entailed (p&p) the property away from them.
-
as for earning money, while legal,it was socially unacceptable for women of this particular class to work
Wow, look at the IMDB pics of Mark Strong and Andy Garcia, they looks SO MUCH ALIKE!!!! I thought they were the same person at first! Mark Strong is 6 years younger though.
Kate Beckinsale is the perfect Emma! While other actresses have done a great job to make themselves "handsome, clever and rich", Kate has the mannerism and carriage that others lack. Romola Garai was somewhat gleeful, Gwyneth Paltrow disinterested! Kate was impeccable in her portrayal.
@emalisej Indeed! Austens dialogue seems to come natural to Beckinsale - and it's by no means easy. Paltrow over-acts terribly, with all her artifical 'oh dear!'s... :-)
@emalisej Indeed! Austens dialogue seems to come natural to Beckinsale - and it's by no means easy. And she's such a feisty Emma! Paltrow over-acts terribly, with all her artifical 'oh dear!'s... :-)
@EliskaLet You mean you don't like the looks of this Mr Knightley? Because as far as person, personality and portrayal goes, I found Mark Strong's as nearly flawless.
@EliskaLet Emma had a nice chance with a handsome acquaintance of hers, Mr Frank Churchill, but she chose the seven-or-eight and thirty year old Mr Knightley over that three-or-four and twenty year old Churchill. Anyway, how can you not like Mark Strong? He has a more manly voice and looks than either Northam or Miller. While Jeremy Northam was not unconvincing, Johnny Lee Miller was just miscast - I fear, because of his looks!
does this movie represent the book well? I switched into a Jane Austen class late in the semester and I don't have as much time to read all the books.
even though this isn't my favourite version, i am really glad they made it, cuz there are some things about this one that i just love that aren't in the others! thanks for sharing!
The star girl is REALLY pretty! In sense and senseibility the star girl was pretty, but compared to the man she fell in love with she was sooo plain...
Jeremy Northam is really WONDERFUL as Mr Knightly. And I also like Gwenyth Paltrow as Emma the best, but I am biased because it is the first version I ever saw. But definately Jeremy Northam. You should watch the version with them in it. it was also made in 1996
I have always loved this film! So much! ♥ Definitely my favourite adaptation of Emma. I used to know it by heart when I was younger (I haven't tested myself for a while ;). But it's ITV, not BBC.
Best version of Emma. Thanks very much for posting. Far better than the Gweneth Paltrow version and even though I think Ramola Garai is great, I like this Emma best.
I'm discovering that the version with Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller is ten times better!

This emma seems much better than the 2009 version. The acting, or shall i say the choice of actors was terrible in that version.
